Incredible location at the heart of George Town. The room is comfortable and clean. The staff are efficient and the hotel itself has some really nice communal spaces. Only downside is that it can be a bit noisy at night but we got used to it after the first night.

Georgetown, in particular, is home to numerous halal-certified restaurants and eateries. You'll find a wide array of options, from traditional Malay cuisine to Indian Muslim dishes, often just a short walk or a quick Grab ride from Tien Hotel. Look for the halal certification logo displayed prominently at restaurant entrances.

The famous Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls, located very close to Tien Hotel, offer a fantastic opportunity to sample local favorites. Many of these stalls are known to prepare their food according to halal practices, using fresh ingredients and traditional methods. It's always a good idea to politely inquire if you are unsure, but the general atmosphere and common offerings are very accommodating to Muslim diners seeking authentic Penang flavors.

Upon arriving at Tien Hotel, you can proceed with check-in anytime between 15:00 and 22:00. This window allows for flexibility, accommodating various travel schedules, whether you're arriving in the afternoon or later in the evening. When you check in, you will likely need to present a valid identification document, such as your MyKad or passport, and possibly a credit card for incidentals.

If you happen to arrive before the 15:00 check-in time, the hotel staff may be able to store your luggage securely, allowing you to begin exploring Georgetown without being burdened by your bags. This service is common and very helpful for travelers eager to make the most of their first day. The hotel's central location means you can start sightseeing immediately.

For your departure, check-out is scheduled between 07:00 and 12:00. This provides a generous morning window to enjoy a final Malaysian breakfast or pack at your leisure. If you have a later flight or onward journey, inquire at the reception about the possibility of a late check-out, though this is subject to availability and may incur an additional fee. Luggage storage is typically available if you wish to continue exploring after checking out.

Your Travel Guide to Pulau Pinang as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Getting to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with several transport options available. Flights are the quickest method, with numerous daily services from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) to Penang International Airport (PEN). Flight durations are typically around one hour, and fares can range from MYR 100 to MYR 300 or more, depending on the airline and booking time. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive prices.

For those who prefer overland travel, express buses offer a more economical choice. Services run frequently from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to Penang's Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. The journey takes approximately 4.5 to 5.5 hours, with ticket prices generally ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 70. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy the scenery and want to save on travel costs.

Driving is also a popular option for Malaysians. The North-South Expressway connects Kuala Lumpur to Penang, with a journey time of about 4 to 5 hours. Toll charges will apply, typically amounting to around MYR 50-70 for a one-way trip, depending on your vehicle type. This provides the most flexibility for exploring Penang and its surroundings at your own pace.

Best Time to Visit Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it's warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers is generally between December and February, and again from June to August. These periods typically offer drier weather with less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the heritage sites of Georgetown.

However, it's important to note that Penang experiences rain showers year-round. The monsoon seasons, typically from September to November and again from April to May, can bring heavier rainfall. While this might disrupt some outdoor plans, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. For food lovers, the rain doesn't stop the hawker stalls from serving up delicious treats, so any time can be a good time to visit Penang.

Food and Dining Near Pulau Pinang — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Penang is renowned as Malaysia's food capital, and no trip is complete without indulging in its iconic dishes. Nasi Lemak, the national dish, is a fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and served with spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg. While available everywhere, Penang's version often has its unique local twists.

Char Kway Teow is another must-try. This stir-fried flat rice noodle dish, cooked over high heat with prawns, cockles, chives, and bean sprouts, is a smoky, savory delight. Many hawker stalls in Penang are famous for their rendition, often using lard for that authentic flavor, though halal versions are readily available. Laksa, particularly Penang's Asam Laksa, is a sour and spicy fish-based noodle soup that is incredibly refreshing and flavorful.

Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with curry, is a breakfast staple that's also enjoyed throughout the day. Its crispy texture and soft interior make it incredibly satisfying. For those seeking something sweet, Cendol, a dessert of shaved ice, coconut milk, palm sugar, and green rice flour jelly, is the perfect way to cool down on a hot day. These dishes, and many more, can be found at hawker centers and local restaurants across the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Pulau Pinang

Penang's culture is a fascinating blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences. When visiting religious sites like temples or mosques, it's important to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, but it's always polite to be respectful of local customs and traditions. A simple "terima kasih" (thank you) goes a long way.

Safety in Penang is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying excessive wealth. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many establishments and for toll roads. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking in at certain venues. Having these apps on your smartphone will make navigating and managing your trip much smoother.

We found this hotel to have charm but the street noise, lack of bathroom door and mediocre cleanliness out weighed the charm. We also booked because we wanted to have a pool to cool off in after seeing the sites but the actual pool size was much smaller than what the photo looked like on line. For the money I think there are better options.

1) Booked a suite room - defective aircond and apparently many ppl have complained before. 2) staff came back to room to give us second access card, didn’t even knock the door just tagged and open the door. 3) shoes are to be removed, but they make us walk barefoot through dirty areas to the suite room. 4) night staff tried to short change us by charging additional tourist tax of rm 24 although he knows we are locals. We took refund the next morning from the morning staff and only paid rm2. 5) ID of this place is nice but definitely need to improvise on maintenance.

Lebuh Chulia, convenient location and bus transport, near to the night street stalls and eateries, adjacent lively bar area but a bit noisy at times after midnight.

The staff are only present at the reception for a few hours during the day. No one was at the reception desk when we wanted to check out in the morning. The reception was right outside of our room so we could hear a lot outside of our room. The bathroom has no door, just a curtain.

Courtyard Suite. Good sized room. Hotel close to bars, restaurants and street food. Has a kitchen area but nothing really to cook with. Unfortunately noisy building work all day from next door restaurant.

Unassuming entrance once inside Large new stylish rooms with bath and monsoon shower. In room safe. No refrigerator or tea/coffee. Wifi bit sporadic. TV didn’t work. Good location near bars and restaurants although parts of Chulia St resemble now resemble Kuta. Room fronted onto street and despite double glazing was loud until the wee hours

The suite room was big, comfortable, and spacious. The location is great as well. Only hiccups were during check in. That could have been smoother but seemed like they were training.

Beautifil interior of the building. Just like the pictures. Spacious, lovely. Deep soak bath was a delight. Didnt get any sleep the 4 nights I was there. Midnight parades, 3am road works, bars and clubs all weekend. And just as noisey during the day..

Cute little hotel, really clean, and welcoming staff. Situated in a good location. The only downside was it was quite noisy on the street at night. I would definitely recommend staying!

Incredible location at the heart of George Town. The room is comfortable and clean. The staff are efficient and the hotel itself has some really nice communal spaces. Only downside is that it can be a bit noisy at night but we got used to it after the first night.

Do not have proper lobby at ground level, the reception is at 3rd floor, unfriendly to elderly as need to climb by staircase.
