We stayed for 2 days at the Crown Victoria Hotel in Tulungagung. It was a pleasant experience. The bedroom was okay. The bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was a tap for ablution. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The most impressive thing was the fried rice and fried noodles cooked fresh from a food cart. They were delicious too.

I stayed here for 5 days and everything was great. I got it for around 150 with water, TV, and AC, all of which worked well. There were towels, bottled water, and complete toiletries for 2 people. The location is strategically located in the city center, close to everything. There are lots of delicious and affordable culinary spots nearby. To the friendly owner and staff, stay healthy! Hopefully, we can come back with our family. Amen.

More about hotels in Besuki

Besuki: A Gateway to East Java's Coastal Charms for Filipino Travellers

For Filipino travellers seeking an authentic Indonesian experience beyond the usual tourist trails, Besuki in East Java presents a compelling proposition. This region offers a unique blend of coastal beauty, cultural depth, and genuine local life, providing a refreshing alternative to more crowded destinations. Unlike the bustling metropolises or heavily touristed islands, Besuki retains a more laid-back atmosphere, allowing visitors to connect with the local rhythm and discover its understated attractions. It’s a place where the scent of the sea mingles with the aroma of local spices, and where the warmth of the people is as palpable as the tropical sun.

The charm of Besuki lies in its diverse neighbourhoods, each offering a distinct flavour of East Javanese life. From the coastal allure of Besuki itself, with its proximity to beaches, to the more urban pulse of Tulungagung City Center, and the quieter residential feel of Kedungwaru and Boyolangu, the region invites exploration. Kauman, with its own unique character, adds another layer to this mosaic. Understanding these variations is key to crafting a memorable itinerary, as choosing a base in one area over another can significantly shape your daily experiences, from the ease of accessing natural wonders to the availability of local amenities and cultural immersion opportunities.

With an average starting price of approximately ₱ 1,019.78 per night and an overall review score of 7.9 from 32 reviews, Besuki positions itself as an accessible and budget-friendly destination for international visitors. This value proposition is particularly attractive to travellers from the United States, Europe, and India, who often seek destinations offering rich cultural experiences without the premium price tag. For those accustomed to higher travel costs, Besuki represents an opportunity to stretch their travel budget further, allowing for longer stays or more extensive exploration of the surrounding region, making it a smart choice for value-conscious globetrotters.

The accommodation landscape in Besuki mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from the practical comforts of OYO 93628 Scorpion Guest House & Beach, a 4-star guest house offering amenities like a kitchenette and fitness center, to the more resort-style experience at the 3-star Se.milir Resort, which provides a children's play area and kids club. These options, among others, cater to various preferences and budgets, ensuring that travellers can find a suitable place to stay. For those ready to plan their adventure, exploring these diverse lodging choices is the first step to a rewarding trip, and you can easily book hotel options that fit your needs.

Ultimately, Besuki is a destination that rewards the curious traveller. For US and European visitors, it offers a glimpse into a less-trodden path of Indonesian culture and natural beauty, with opportunities for both relaxation and adventure. Indian travellers will find familiar culinary influences and a welcoming atmosphere, coupled with excellent value for money. While direct connections might be less common for African travellers, the region's accessibility via major Indonesian hubs makes it a feasible and enriching addition to a broader Southeast Asian itinerary, promising a genuine encounter with East Java.

Best Areas to Stay in Besuki

Besuki, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of advantages for international visitors. Understanding these areas is crucial for tailoring your stay to your preferences, whether you prioritize proximity to natural attractions, a lively urban environment, or a tranquil retreat. Choosing the right base within Besuki can significantly enhance your travel experience, influencing everything from your daily commute to the local flavours you encounter.

Besuki

The area bearing the region's name, Besuki, serves as a primary gateway, particularly for those drawn to its coastal proximity. This neighbourhood offers a relaxed pace of life, where the sea breeze is a constant companion. It’s an ideal spot for travellers who appreciate a more laid-back environment and easy access to the natural beauty of the coast, including popular spots like Midodaren Beach Tulungagung. From Besuki, exploring the coastline is straightforward, with attractions like Sidem Beach within reach for day trips. The area is well-connected by local transport, facilitating journeys to other parts of the region. While it might not boast the extensive dining and shopping options of a major city center, it offers a more intimate experience with local eateries and markets. For travellers arriving from afar, understanding the transfer options from the nearest major airport to Besuki is key to a smooth arrival.

Kauman

Kauman presents a neighbourhood with a distinct character, often characterized by its traditional architecture and a strong sense of community. For international visitors, it offers a chance to step away from the more tourist-centric areas and experience a more residential side of Besuki. This area might particularly appeal to travellers from Europe or the US who are interested in exploring local crafts, traditional Javanese life, and perhaps discovering smaller, family-run businesses that contribute to the area's unique identity.

While Kauman may not be directly adjacent to major beaches, it provides a central point from which to explore the wider region. Local culinary finds are often a highlight here, with opportunities to sample authentic Javanese cuisine in less commercialized settings. Getting to Kauman from the main transport hubs is generally manageable via local buses or ride-hailing services, offering a glimpse into the local transit system as you make your way to book attractions and tours.

Tulungagung City Center

As the administrative and commercial heart of the wider Tulungagung area, the City Center offers a more dynamic and urban experience. This district is ideal for travellers who prefer to be in the midst of activity, with a wider array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options readily available. Its central location makes it a convenient base for exploring various parts of Besuki and beyond, attracting visitors who value accessibility and a bustling atmosphere, including many business travellers and those on shorter trips.

Proximity to key landmarks and amenities is a major draw, and for those interested in cultural sites or experiencing the local nightlife, this area provides ample opportunities. It's also a practical starting point for day trips to nearby natural attractions, including the coastal areas.

Kedungwaru

Kedungwaru offers a more tranquil and residential ambiance, often appealing to travellers seeking a quieter stay away from the main urban bustle. This neighbourhood provides a more authentic glimpse into local life, with a slower pace that can be very appealing after a day of sightseeing. It’s a good choice for visitors who appreciate a more relaxed environment and perhaps wish to experience a more typical Javanese neighbourhood, potentially attracting travellers from India or Africa looking for a comfortable and less hectic base.

While Kedungwaru might be more residential, it often provides good access to local amenities and transport links that connect to other parts of the region. It’s a suitable area for exploring local eateries and understanding the daily routines of residents. Its proximity to certain natural sites or cultural points of interest can also be a draw, making it a practical choice for those who prefer a peaceful retreat while still being within reach of Besuki's main attractions.

Boyolangu

Boyolangu presents a unique facet of the Besuki region, often associated with specific cultural or historical significance, depending on its local context. For international visitors, it offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the local heritage and traditions. This area might appeal to travellers with a keen interest in history, culture, or those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience, potentially drawing in European travellers interested in cultural exploration and understanding regional nuances.

Staying in Boyolangu can provide a different perspective on East Javanese life. While it may have fewer large-scale tourist facilities, it often compensates with authentic local experiences and a more intimate connection with the community. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Besuki

Besuki, set in East Java, offers a culinary landscape rich with local flavours and traditional Indonesian dishes that are sure to delight any palate. The region is known for its distinct Javanese cuisine, often characterized by a balance of sweet, savory, and spicy notes. Signature dishes include 'Nasi Goreng' (fried rice), 'Sate Ayam' (chicken satay), and various 'Gudeg' (jackfruit stew) variations, each prepared with local spices and techniques that give them a unique regional identity. Exploring these authentic tastes is a fundamental part of the Besuki experience.

For an authentic taste of Besuki, seeking out local 'warungs' (small eateries) and traditional markets is highly recommended. Areas like Tulungagung City Center and the neighbourhood of Besuki itself are dotted with these establishments, offering a true immersion into local food culture. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most local eateries adhere to Halal practices. Look for signs indicating 'Halal' or ask locals for recommendations to ensure your dining experiences align with your dietary needs.

The cost of dining in Besuki offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and meals at local warungs can range from as little as ₱ 15 to ₱ 50 per person, making it incredibly affordable for those on a budget. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 100 to ₱ 250 per meal, while more upscale dining experiences might cost upwards of ₱ 300 to ₱ 500. Compared to Western prices, these rates are significantly lower, allowing travellers from the US, Europe, and India to enjoy diverse culinary experiences without straining their budgets.

When dining in Besuki, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often eaten with a spoon and fork, though sometimes with the right hand for certain dishes. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount for exceptional service is appreciated. It's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating first. Familiarizing yourself with these simple etiquette points will ensure respectful and enjoyable interactions with local food culture.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Besuki

Navigating the cultural landscape of Besuki requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions. Javanese culture, prevalent in this region, emphasizes politeness, humility, and respect for elders. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a nod, and to use your right hand when giving or receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas, is highly recommended for all travellers.

When visiting popular spots like Midodaren Beach Tulungagung and Sidem Beach, maintaining respectful behaviour is key. While these are natural attractions, they are often frequented by locals, so dressing in beachwear is generally acceptable, but it's advisable to cover up when moving away from the immediate beach area. Photography of individuals should always be done with permission. Entry to any local temples or significant cultural sites will likely require modest attire, including covering shoulders and knees, and sometimes removing footwear before entering.

For practical safety in Besuki, exercising common sense precautions is advised. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or transport hubs. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are generally available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, providing fare estimates upfront. For navigating the city and its surroundings, consider downloading offline maps and translation apps, which can be invaluable tools for communication and orientation, especially in areas with limited English signage.

In case of emergencies, knowing key contact numbers is crucial. For police, dial 110; for ambulance services, dial 118 or 119. While Besuki may not have a dedicated tourist police force, local police are generally helpful. The nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia is located in Jakarta, and it's advisable to have their contact details handy. For Filipino travellers, registering with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) or the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) before departure can provide access to support services if needed. Always consider travel insurance for comprehensive health and emergency coverage.

Getting to Besuki and Getting Around

Reaching Besuki from the Philippines involves a journey that typically requires at least one layover, as direct flights are uncommon. Travellers from Manila (NAIA/MNL), Cebu (CEB), or Clark (CRK) will likely find routes connecting through major hubs like Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB), which are the closest international airports to the Besuki region.

Flight durations can range from 8 to 15 hours or more, depending on the layover. The estimated cost for a round-trip ticket can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000, especially if booked in advance. From Surabaya's Juanda International Airport (SUB), which is the most practical gateway, it's approximately a 3-4 hour drive to Besuki. For those ready to plan their travel, you can book flight options that best suit your schedule and budget.

Once you arrive in the Besuki region, getting around is facilitated by a mix of local transportation options. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient way to travel between neighbourhoods and to attractions, with fares typically being quite affordable. For shorter distances or a more local experience, 'ojek' (motorcycle taxis) are common, and local minibuses or 'angkot' operate on fixed routes, offering a very economical way to travel, though they can be crowded and less direct. Taxis are also available, but it's advisable to ensure they use a meter or agree on a fare beforehand.

The best time to visit Besuki generally falls within the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the beaches and outdoor attractions. The shoulder months of April and October can also offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. While the wet season (November to March) brings occasional rain showers, it also means lower hotel prices and a more tranquil atmosphere, which might appeal to travellers seeking a quieter experience and who are less concerned about potential downpours.

Before you depart for Besuki, ensure you have a few essentials prepared. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels might accept credit cards, it's wise to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local transport. ATMs are widely available in urban centers. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data access, which is useful for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps (with offline maps), a translation app, and ride-hailing apps. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Visa Information

For Filipino passport holders planning a trip to Besuki, Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is a crucial step. Fortunately, Philippine citizens benefit from visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes. This allows for stays of up to 30 days without the need for a pre-arranged visa. It is essential, however, to ensure your passport has a minimum validity of six months from your date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian international airports. You will typically present your passport to immigration officials, who will then stamp your entry. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free facility, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines, as policies can be subject to change. It is also recommended to have sufficient funds to cover your stay, though this is not always explicitly checked for visa-free travellers.

While the visa-free entry is a significant convenience, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the most current visa regulations directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before booking flights or making travel arrangements. Immigration policies can be updated without prior notice, and confirming your entry status ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey to Besuki and other parts of Indonesia.
