We stayed for 2 days at the Crown Victoria Hotel in Tulungagung. It was a pleasant experience. The bedroom was okay. The bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was a tap for ablution. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The most impressive thing was the fried rice and fried noodles cooked fresh from a food cart. They were delicious too.

Best Areas to Stay in Pakel

Pakel, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of attractions for international visitors. Choosing where to base yourself within Pakel can significantly shape your travel experience, influencing your access to local culture, dining, and transportation. Understanding these areas will help you find the perfect spot that aligns with your travel style, whether you're seeking vibrant city life, tranquil escapes, or cultural immersion.

Tulungagung City Center

The heart of Pakel's urban life, Tulungagung City Center, is a bustling hub that offers a dynamic introduction to the region. For international travellers, this area provides a convenient base with easy access to amenities, shopping, and a wide array of dining options. It's particularly well-suited for those who prefer to be in the midst of activity and appreciate the convenience of having everything within reach. The energy here is palpable, offering a glimpse into the daily rhythm of local life, making it a great starting point for first-time visitors to Pakel.

Within Tulungagung City Center, visitors can explore local markets, discover diverse culinary delights, and find numerous accommodation choices. Landmarks like the Alun-Alun (town square) serve as central gathering points. For those interested in experiencing the local culture and cuisine, this area is a prime location. Getting to Tulungagung City Center from the nearest international airport typically involves a connecting flight to a regional Indonesian airport followed by a ground transfer, making it essential to plan your journey in advance to ensure a smooth arrival.

Kauman

Kauman presents a more traditional and perhaps historically significant side of Pakel, often characterized by its older architecture and established community feel. For international travellers, this neighbourhood offers a quieter, more authentic experience, allowing for deeper engagement with local customs and heritage. It’s an area that appeals to those seeking a less commercialized stay, where the pace of life is slower and the sense of community is strong. Travellers interested in cultural immersion and understanding the historical roots of Pakel will find Kauman particularly rewarding.

This district is known for its local crafts and traditional food stalls, offering a genuine taste of regional specialties. Exploring Kauman allows visitors to step back in time and appreciate the enduring traditions of Pakel. While it might be more residential, its proximity to other key areas means that essential amenities are still accessible. Planning your transport from the airport to Kauman is crucial, as it may require a combination of flights and ground transfers to reach this charming locale.

Kedungwaru

Kedungwaru offers a blend of residential tranquility and developing commercial activity, making it an appealing choice for travellers looking for a balanced experience in Pakel. This area is characterized by its local neighbourhoods, providing a sense of everyday Indonesian life, while also hosting a growing number of amenities and services. It’s a good option for those who want to experience a more local side of Pakel without being too far from conveniences, appealing to travellers who appreciate a more laid-back atmosphere.

Kedungwaru is a great base for exploring local eateries and experiencing the community vibe. It’s also a strategic point for accessing various parts of the wider Pakel region. For travellers keen on exploring beyond their immediate surroundings, Kedungwaru provides good access to local transport networks. Besuki is a district that often evokes a sense of calm and natural surroundings, potentially offering a more relaxed and scenic stay within the Pakel region. For international visitors, this area might appeal to those seeking an escape from the urban bustle, providing a chance to connect with a quieter side of Indonesian life. It’s an area that could be particularly attractive to travellers looking for a more serene environment, perhaps with closer proximity to natural landscapes or a more rural feel within the broader Pakel context.

While Besuki might be more tranquil, it still offers opportunities to experience local culture and cuisine, often in a more intimate setting. It serves as a good starting point for exploring specific local points of interest that might be less accessible from the city center. Reaching Besuki from the main international gateway to Indonesia will involve a series of flights and ground transfers, so researching the most efficient travel routes is recommended for a comfortable journey.

Boyolangu

Boyolangu is a neighbourhood that often carries a strong sense of local identity and community spirit within the Pakel region. For international travellers, it offers an opportunity to engage with a more authentic, less tourist-oriented side of Indonesia. This area might appeal to visitors who are keen on experiencing genuine local life, interacting with residents, and understanding the cultural nuances of the region. It’s a place where the everyday rhythms of Indonesian society are on full display, providing a rich cultural backdrop.

In Boyolangu, visitors can often find local eateries serving traditional dishes and experience the warmth of Indonesian hospitality firsthand. It’s an area that encourages exploration on foot, allowing for spontaneous discoveries of local shops and community spaces. The cost of dining in Pakel offers exceptional value for international travellers. Street food and local warungs (small eateries) can provide a filling meal for as little as ₱50-₱150 (approximately $1-3 USD). Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200-₱500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal, including drinks. Even more upscale dining experiences are considerably more affordable than in Western countries, with a three-course meal for two rarely exceeding ₱1,000-₱1,500 (approximately $20-30 USD). Meals are often communal, with dishes shared among diners. It's polite to use your right hand for eating, especially when consuming food directly. While many restaurants have English menus, learning a few basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can be very helpful and is always appreciated by local restaurateurs. Observing meal times, which generally align with Western schedules but can be more flexible, will also help you navigate the local dining scene smoothly.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Pakel

Understanding local etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Pakel. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, and a few simple gestures can go a long way. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite nod. When interacting with locals, especially elders, showing respect is paramount. Avoid using your left hand to give or receive items, as it is traditionally considered unclean. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's advisable to keep interactions modest.

When visiting religious sites or more traditional areas within Pakel, dressing modestly is essential. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees. For women, a headscarf might be required for entry into certain mosques or temples. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, particularly in more rural or traditional settings. When entering someone's home or a place of worship, it is customary to remove your shoes. Observing these practices demonstrates respect for local customs and ensures a more harmonious interaction with the community.

Safety in Pakel is generally good, with petty crime being the most common concern, similar to many tourist destinations. It's advisable to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek is recommended, as they offer transparent pricing and driver details. These services are widely available in the main areas of Pakel and provide a safe and convenient way to get around. Always ensure your accommodation is in a well-lit and secure area.

For any emergencies in Pakel, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 for an ambulance. Filipino travellers should be aware of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in emergencies. It is also wise to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and repatriation. For specific health advice, consult your doctor before travelling, and consider carrying a basic first-aid kit for minor ailments. Staying informed and prepared will ensure a safe and pleasant trip to Pakel.

The total travel time can range from 8 to 15 hours, depending on the layover duration.

Flight prices in Philippine Pesos (PHP) can vary significantly, but budget around ₱15,000 to ₱30,000 for a round trip, especially if booked in advance. The primary gateway airport serving the Pakel region is usually a regional Indonesian airport, from which further ground or domestic air transfers are necessary to reach Pakel itself. For those ready to plan their journey, it's easy to book flight tickets that suit your schedule and budget.

Navigating Pakel and its surrounding areas is relatively straightforward, with several transportation options available. Local buses and minivans (angkot) are the most economical way to travel between different districts, though they can be crowded and follow fixed routes. Taxis are available, but it's advisable to use metered taxis or agree on a fare beforehand. Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek are widely used and offer a convenient and often more affordable alternative, providing both car and motorcycle taxi services. For exploring within specific neighbourhoods, walking is often the best way to discover local charm.

The best time to visit Pakel generally falls during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. The shoulder months of April and October can also offer good weather with fewer crowds. Peak tourist season often coincides with major Indonesian holidays, which can lead to higher hotel prices and busier attractions. For travellers from the US, Europe, and India, aligning their visit with periods outside of major school holidays can ensure a more relaxed and cost-effective trip.

Before departing for Pakel, ensure you have a few essentials prepared. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is advisable for smaller vendors and local markets. You can exchange currency at the airport or in local banks. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps to download include offline maps (like Google Maps or Maps.me), a translation app, and ride-hailing applications.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Indonesia, including the Pakel region, visa regulations are a crucial consideration. As of current information, Philippine citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, usually up to 30 days. This exemption allows for tourism and business purposes. It is imperative to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your intended date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian immigration checkpoints. You will present your Philippine passport and may be asked to show your return ticket. While no visa fee is charged for this exemption, it is always wise to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your trip, as policies can change. It is also recommended to have sufficient funds to cover your stay, although this is not always explicitly checked for visa-free travellers.

While visa-free entry is common, it is essential for all travellers to verify the most up-to-date visa requirements directly with the official immigration authorities of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. Travel plans should ideally be made with the understanding that visa policies can be subject to change without prior notice. Confirming your entry status before booking flights and accommodation is a prudent step to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to Pakel and other destinations within Indonesia.
