We stayed for 2 days at the Crown Victoria Hotel in Tulungagung. It was a pleasant experience. The bedroom was okay. The bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was a tap for ablution. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The most impressive thing was the fried rice and fried noodles cooked fresh from a food cart. They were delicious too.

I stayed here for 5 days and everything was great. I got it for around 150 with water, TV, and AC, all of which worked well. There were towels, bottled water, and complete toiletries for 2 people. The location is strategically located in the city center, close to everything. There are lots of delicious and affordable culinary spots nearby. To the friendly owner and staff, stay healthy! Hopefully, we can come back with our family. Amen.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Ngantru

Ngantru, located within the culinary rich province of East Java, offers a distinct gastronomic journey that reflects Indonesia's diverse flavours. While sharing commonalities with broader Indonesian cuisine, the region boasts local specialties that are a must-try for any visitor. Dishes like *Nasi Goreng Kampung* (village-style fried rice), *Sate Ayam* (chicken satay) with its rich peanut sauce, and *Gado-Gado* (vegetable salad with peanut dressing) are staples, often prepared with a local twist that enhances their unique taste. Exploring these authentic flavours provides a delicious insight into the local culture.

For an authentic taste of Ngantru, exploring its local markets and street food stalls is highly recommended. Areas around the city center and neighbourhood hubs often come alive in the evenings with vendors offering a variety of local delicacies. For Muslim travellers, Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, and finding Halal food is generally straightforward. Most eateries clearly indicate if their food is Halal, and traditional Indonesian dishes are inherently prepared according to Halal principles, ensuring a comfortable dining experience for those with dietary requirements.

The affordability of dining in Ngantru is a significant draw for international travellers. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱50-₱100 (less than $2 USD) per meal, offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200-₱500 (around $3-$9 USD) for a full meal, which is considerably less than what travellers from the US or Europe might expect. Even more upscale dining experiences remain accessible, allowing visitors to savour diverse culinary offerings without significant expense.

When dining in Ngantru, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10%. It's common to eat with the right hand, especially in more casual settings, though utensils are widely available. Meal times are generally flexible, with lunch being the main meal of the day. Observing local etiquette, such as waiting to be seated and showing respect for elders, will be greatly appreciated by your hosts and contribute to a more enriching cultural exchange.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Ngantru

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enjoyable visit to Ngantru. Indonesians, in general, are known for their politeness and hospitality. A gentle greeting, such as "Selamat pagi" (Good morning) or "Terima kasih" (Thank you), goes a long way. When visiting homes or more traditional areas, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's advisable to keep interactions respectful and modest.

When exploring Ngantru, particularly its religious sites or more traditional neighbourhoods like Kauman, dressing modestly is important. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees. While tourist areas might be more relaxed, adhering to a respectful dress code shows consideration for local culture. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, especially in more rural or traditional settings. In markets or busy areas, be mindful of personal space and avoid overly loud behaviour.

Safety in Ngantru is generally good, with petty crime being uncommon in most tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to be vigilant. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or when using public transport. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. For navigation, downloading offline maps of Ngantru and surrounding areas can be very helpful.

In case of emergencies, local police can be reached by dialling 110. For medical assistance, contact the nearest hospital or clinic. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Ngantru itself, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary point of contact for Filipino citizens requiring consular assistance in Indonesia. It's always advisable for Filipino travellers to register their trip with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and consider travel insurance for added peace of mind.

Getting to Ngantru and Getting Around

Reaching Ngantru from the Philippines is an adventure in itself, typically involving a flight to a major Indonesian hub like Surabaya (SUB) or Yogyakarta (JOG), followed by a connecting flight or overland journey. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to these Indonesian gateways are available, with total travel times varying from 8 to 12 hours, depending on layovers. Prices for flights can range from ₱8,000 to ₱15,000, depending on the season and booking time. From Surabaya or Yogyakarta, Ngantru is accessible via a domestic flight to the nearest airport, or a scenic train or bus ride.

Once you arrive in the Ngantru region, navigating the area is relatively straightforward. The most convenient way to get around the city center and its immediate surroundings is by using ride-hailing apps like Grab, which offer both car and motorcycle taxi options at competitive prices. For exploring specific neighbourhoods like Kauman or Kedungwaru, local *ojek* (motorcycle taxis) or *becak* (bicycle rickshaws) can provide a more authentic and localized experience. Public buses also operate within the region, offering a very budget-friendly option for longer distances.

The best time to visit Ngantru generally falls during the dry season, from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. The shoulder months of April and October can also offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. While the wet season (November to March) brings occasional rain, it also means lush landscapes and potentially lower accommodation prices, which can be attractive for budget-conscious travellers.

Before embarking on your journey to Ngantru, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is advisable for markets and smaller vendors. You can exchange currency at the airport or in local banks. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy data access, essential for navigation and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps, a translation app, and ride-hailing services.

Visa Information for Indonesia (Ngantru)

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Ngantru, understanding the visa requirements for Indonesia is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. This visa exemption is a significant convenience, simplifying travel arrangements. It is always recommended to confirm the latest visa policies with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your departure, as regulations can be subject to change.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward. Upon arrival at the Indonesian port of entry, immigration officials will typically stamp your passport, indicating the duration of your permitted stay. While no visa fee is charged for this exemption, it is essential to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket. Some travellers may also be asked to show proof of sufficient funds for their trip.

While visa-free entry is common, policies can evolve. It is highly advisable for all travellers, including those from the US, Europe, India, and Africa, to verify the most current visa regulations directly with the official immigration authorities of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in their respective countries well in advance of booking flights. This proactive step ensures a smooth entry into Indonesia and avoids any last-minute complications, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip to Ngantru.
