We stayed for 2 days at the Crown Victoria Hotel in Tulungagung. It was a pleasant experience. The bedroom was okay. The bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was a tap for ablution. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The most impressive thing was the fried rice and fried noodles cooked fresh from a food cart. They were delicious too.

I stayed here for 5 days and everything was great. I got it for around 150 with water, TV, and AC, all of which worked well. There were towels, bottled water, and complete toiletries for 2 people. The location is strategically located in the city center, close to everything. There are lots of delicious and affordable culinary spots nearby. To the friendly owner and staff, stay healthy! Hopefully, we can come back with our family. Amen.

Kauman: A Gateway to East Java's Undiscovered Charms

Indonesia, an archipelago renowned for its diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, offers countless destinations that captivate the international traveller. Beyond the well-trodden paths of Bali and Java's major cities lies Kauman, a region in East Java that presents a unique blend of local life, natural beauty, and burgeoning tourism infrastructure. For travellers from the Philippines, seeking an authentic Indonesian experience without the overwhelming crowds, Kauman emerges as a compelling choice. It offers a glimpse into a more serene side of Indonesia, where traditional Javanese culture still thrives, and the pace of life allows for genuine connection and exploration.

The appeal of Kauman is amplified by its distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of the region's character. From the bustling heart of Tulungagung City Center, a hub of commerce and local activity, to the tranquil residential areas of Kedungwaru and the serene landscapes of Besuki, Kauman provides a varied experience within a compact geographical area. Even within the district simply named Kauman, one can find pockets of distinct local flavour. Understanding these nuances is key for any international visitor, as choosing a base in one area over another can significantly shape the overall journey, influencing access to attractions, dining, and the general atmosphere of your stay.

For international travellers, particularly those from the United States, Europe, and India, Kauman presents an exceptional value proposition. With an average starting price of just ₱ 622.08 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.9 from over 2,000 reviews, the region offers a high standard of accommodation and experience at a fraction of the cost found in more established tourist hubs. This affordability allows for extended stays, deeper exploration of local culture, and the opportunity to indulge in more activities, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious yet experience-seeking travellers.

The accommodation landscape in Kauman mirrors this blend of value and variety. For instance, the Jamboo Kingdom Hotel & Resort, a 4-star property, offers extensive facilities like a waterpark and kitchenette, catering to families and those seeking resort-style amenities. On the other hand, the Urbanview Hotel Trisna Srabah, a 3-star hotel, provides a more straightforward, yet highly-rated, option for travellers looking for comfortable and well-located lodging. These examples, among many others available on Traveloka, showcase the diverse range of options, allowing visitors to easily book hotel that perfectly suits their needs and budget.

Kauman's appeal extends across various international markets. For American travellers, it offers an off-the-beaten-path adventure with a chance to experience authentic Indonesian culture away from mass tourism. European visitors might be drawn to the historical and cultural aspects, exploring local traditions and the region's natural beauty. Indian travellers will find the affordability, connectivity, and the availability of diverse culinary options particularly appealing, while African travellers may appreciate the regional proximity and the opportunity to explore a different facet of Southeast Asian culture.

Best Areas to Stay in Kauman

Food & Dining

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Kauman

Kauman, located within the culinary landscape of East Java, offers a distinct gastronomic journey that reflects its Javanese heritage. A must-try is *Nasi Goreng*, Indonesia's beloved fried rice, often prepared with local spices and served with a fried egg and satay. Another local specialty is *Sate Ayam*, grilled chicken skewers marinated in a rich peanut sauce, a flavour explosion that is a staple across Indonesia. For those seeking something more unique to the region, look for *Gudeg*, a traditional Javanese dish made from young jackfruit stewed in coconut milk and palm sugar, offering a sweet and savory profile.

For an authentic dining experience, exploring the local markets and street food stalls is highly recommended. Areas around the Alun-Alun in Tulungagung City Center are often vibrant hubs for local delicacies, offering a chance to sample a variety of dishes at incredibly affordable prices. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward in Indonesia, with most local eateries adhering to Halal practices. Look for the Halal logo or inquire with the establishment to ensure your dining preferences are met, providing peace of mind as you explore the local flavours.

The cost of dining in Kauman is remarkably accessible for international visitors. Street food and local warungs (small eateries) can offer a filling meal for as little as ₱ 50 to ₱ 100 (approximately $1-2 USD). Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 150 to ₱ 300 (approximately $3-6 USD) per person for a complete meal. Even more upscale dining experiences are considerably more affordable than in Western countries, with a fine dining experience costing around ₱ 500 to ₱ 800 (approximately $10-16 USD) per person, making Kauman a destination for food lovers on any budget.

When dining in Kauman, embracing local customs will enhance your experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10% of the bill. While many places accept credit cards, carrying some local currency, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), is advisable for smaller establishments and street vendors. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can also be a delightful way to connect with locals and show respect for their culture.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Kauman

Understanding local etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Kauman. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite nod. When interacting with locals, especially elders, using your right hand for gestures and transactions is preferred, as the left hand is sometimes considered unclean. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum, and dressing modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural areas, is highly recommended to show respect for local customs.

When visiting popular landmarks like Mojosari or Villa The Lagoon, it's important to be mindful of local customs. Dress codes are usually relaxed for natural attractions, but it's always wise to wear comfortable yet respectful attire. Photography is generally permitted, but always ask for permission before taking close-up photos of people. Queuing culture is present but can sometimes be less orderly than in Western countries; patience and a calm demeanor are appreciated. Respecting the environment and avoiding littering are also crucial aspects of responsible tourism.

Safety in Kauman is generally good, with petty crime being relatively low. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek is recommended for safety and transparent pricing. It's also advisable to have offline maps downloaded and to inform someone of your itinerary, especially if you plan to explore remote areas.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 for an ambulance. Filipino travellers should be aware of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia for any consular assistance. The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta can be contacted for urgent matters. It is also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to register with the Department of Foreign Affairs' (DFA) program for overseas Filipinos, ensuring you can be reached in case of widespread emergencies.

Travel Guide

Getting to Kauman and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Kauman typically involves flying from major hubs like Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), or Clark (CRK) to a major Indonesian international airport, such as Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya, which is one of the closest major airports to the Tulungagung region. From Surabaya, you can then take a domestic flight to a closer airport or opt for overland travel via bus or private car, which takes approximately 3-4 hours. While direct flights to smaller regional airports might exist, connecting flights through Jakarta (CGK) are common. The total travel time can range from 8 to 15 hours depending on layovers and chosen transport. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better fares.

Navigating Kauman and its surrounding areas is relatively straightforward. Within the city center and main districts, local transport options include 'ojek' (motorcycle taxis), 'becak' (bicycle rickshaws), and local buses. Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek are widely available and offer a convenient and often more affordable way to get around, providing both car and motorcycle options. For exploring further afield, renting a car with a driver is a popular choice for international visitors, offering flexibility and comfort for day trips to attractions like Mojosari or Villa The Lagoon.

The best time to visit Kauman generally falls during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The shoulder months of April and October can also be good, offering fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. Peak tourist seasons in Indonesia often coincide with major holidays like Eid al-Fitr and Christmas, which can lead to higher prices and busier conditions, so planning your visit outside these periods is advisable for a more relaxed experience.

Before departing for Kauman, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels and some larger establishments accept credit cards, it's crucial to carry cash for smaller vendors, markets, and local transport. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for affordable data and calls. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Entering Indonesia to Visit Kauman: Visa Requirements for Philippine Passport Holders

Philippine passport holders benefit from a visa-free entry policy for short stays in Indonesia, including for travel to Kauman. This allows Filipino citizens to enter Indonesia for tourism purposes without the need for a visa, for a duration of up to 30 days. It is essential to ensure your passport has a minimum validity of six months from the date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward or return travel, such as a flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at the designated immigration checkpoints in Indonesia. While no visa fee is charged for this category, travellers may be subject to immigration checks and may need to present their passport, return ticket, and sometimes proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay. It is always prudent to check the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, it is crucial for all travellers to verify the most current visa regulations directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before booking flights. Visa policies can be updated without prior notice, and ensuring compliance with all entry requirements will prevent any potential issues upon arrival. This proactive approach guarantees a smooth and stress-free journey to Kauman and other destinations within Indonesia.
