This hotel is very comfortable, especially the restaurant on the 1st floor. Kwetiau sapi my god, is the best kwetiau I ever had. So good. I've compared it with the one in front of the food court. The one at the hotel restaurant is still better. I come back again and again because the food is delicious at this hotel. The room is super good, the bathroom is super clean, the AC is cold. With that price, it's so cheap but you get a luxury room. Can't find another place like D'Coin. Is my honest testimony. Try it and I think you will think the same as me. Thanks.

More about hotels in Kebon Bawang

Tanjung Priok: A Gateway to Indonesia's Dynamic North Jakarta

For the discerning Filipino traveller seeking an authentic Indonesian experience beyond the usual tourist trails, Tanjung Priok presents a compelling proposition. This bustling port district in North Jakarta offers a unique blend of industrial significance, emerging commercial hubs, and a glimpse into the everyday life of a rapidly developing urban landscape. Unlike the more manicured tourist enclaves, Tanjung Priok provides a raw, energetic introduction to Indonesia, where the rhythm of commerce and local life sets the pace. It’s a place where you can witness the nation’s maritime heart beating strong, while also discovering pockets of local culture and burgeoning urban amenities.

The character of Tanjung Priok is not monolithic; it unfolds across its distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of urban Indonesian living. Kebon Bawang, for instance, is a more established residential and commercial area, buzzing with local activity and providing a grounded feel. In contrast, Sunter emerges as a more modern district, characterized by its commercial centres, residential complexes, and a growing number of hospitality options catering to both business and leisure travellers. Understanding these nuances is key, as choosing to stay in Sunter versus Kebon Bawang can significantly alter your daily experience, from the types of eateries you’ll find to the ease of accessing specific amenities.

From a value perspective, Tanjung Priok stands out for international visitors. With a starting price of just ₱ 593.90 per night and an average review score of 6.9 from 478 reviews, it offers an accessible entry point into Indonesia's capital region. For travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa, this translates into significant savings on accommodation, allowing for a more extensive exploration of local cuisine, transportation, and activities. This affordability doesn't necessarily mean a compromise on quality, as many establishments offer good service and amenities, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious yet experience-seeking globetrotters.

The accommodation landscape in Tanjung Priok mirrors its diverse character. You’ll find everything from the highly-rated Escotel North Garden, a 1-star hotel praised for its rooftop terrace and family-friendly facilities, to the Swahouse Tanjung Priok Syariah Mitra RedDoorz, another 1-star option that offers a children's play area and spa services. These properties, among others, represent the spectrum of choices available, from basic yet functional stays to those offering more specific amenities. For travellers looking to secure their lodging, the ability to easily book hotel rooms in advance through platforms like Traveloka ensures a smooth start to their Indonesian adventure.

Ultimately, Tanjung Priok caters to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For US and European visitors, it offers an authentic urban exploration, a chance to see a less-polished side of Jakarta that provides rich cultural insights. Indian travellers will appreciate the connectivity and the potential for diverse culinary experiences, often at very reasonable prices. African travellers, perhaps seeking regional proximity or a similar developing urban dynamic, will find a familiar energy and a welcoming environment. Each group can find their niche within Tanjung Priok, whether it’s for business, a brief stopover, or an immersive dive into local Indonesian life.

Best Areas to Stay in Tanjung Priok

Tanjung Priok, while a district within the vast metropolis of Jakarta, is comprised of several distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour and set of advantages for international visitors. Choosing where to base yourself is a crucial first step in shaping your Indonesian adventure, influencing everything from your daily commute to the local sights and sounds you’ll encounter. Understanding these areas will help you find the perfect spot that aligns with your travel style and priorities, whether you're seeking vibrant city life or a more tranquil base.

Kebon Bawang

Kebon Bawang presents a grounded, local experience within Tanjung Priok, appealing to travellers who want to feel the pulse of everyday Jakarta life. This neighbourhood is characterized by its mix of residential areas and local businesses, offering a less tourist-centric atmosphere. It’s a place where you can observe daily routines, from morning markets to evening gatherings. Travellers from India or other parts of Asia might find the bustling, community-oriented vibe familiar and comforting, while those from Western countries might appreciate it as an authentic cultural immersion away from the typical tourist crowds.

This area is well-connected and offers practical access to local amenities. You can find numerous small eateries serving authentic Indonesian fare, and it’s a good starting point for exploring local markets. Landmarks like SMAN 13 are situated here, offering a glimpse into local educational institutions. Getting to Kebon Bawang from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) typically involves a taxi or ride-sharing service, taking approximately 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. It’s a solid base for those prioritizing an authentic local feel over proximity to major tourist attractions.

Sunter

Sunter is a more modern and commercially oriented district within Tanjung Priok, making it an attractive option for business travellers and those who prefer a more developed urban environment. It features a concentration of shopping centres, office buildings, and a wider array of contemporary dining and entertainment options. This makes Sunter a comfortable choice for travellers from the US or Europe who are accustomed to modern amenities and a structured urban layout. The presence of hotels like Sunlake Waterfront Resort & Convention Jakarta and ibis Styles Jakarta Sunter indicates its suitability for those seeking reliable comfort and services.

Sunter offers excellent access to shopping and dining, with malls like Mall Sunter providing a variety of retail and food choices. It’s also a good hub for exploring other parts of North Jakarta. For those interested in local attractions, the area provides a convenient base to book attractions and tours. Transportation from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Sunter is straightforward, usually via taxi or ride-sharing, with a travel time of around 40-55 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. It’s ideal for travellers who value convenience and a modern urban setting.

Tanjung Priok (Port Area)

The area directly surrounding the Tanjung Priok port itself offers a unique perspective on Indonesia's maritime industry and its economic engine. While not a typical tourist hub, it’s a vital part of the district’s identity and can be of interest to travellers fascinated by logistics, trade, and the sheer scale of international shipping. This area is primarily industrial and commercial, with a more utilitarian feel. It might appeal to travellers from countries with significant port cities or those with a specific interest in maritime affairs, offering a different kind of urban exploration.

Accommodation options directly in the port area might be more limited and geared towards business travellers or those working in the shipping industry. However, its strategic position means it’s relatively well-connected to other parts of North Jakarta. Local eateries will likely cater to the workforce, offering authentic and affordable Indonesian meals. Access from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) would follow similar routes as Sunter or Kebon Bawang, with travel times varying based on traffic. It’s a district best suited for those with a specific purpose or interest in the port’s operations.

Sunter Agung

Sunter Agung, often considered part of the broader Sunter area, is a well-established residential and commercial zone that offers a balanced urban living experience. It’s known for its mix of housing, local businesses, and green spaces, providing a slightly more relaxed atmosphere compared to the core commercial districts. This neighbourhood is suitable for travellers who appreciate a blend of convenience and a more local feel, potentially appealing to families or longer-stay visitors from various international backgrounds. The presence of apartments and guesthouses suggests a community feel.

Within Sunter Agung, you’ll find local markets, smaller shopping centres, and a variety of restaurants serving Indonesian cuisine. It’s a good area to experience a more laid-back side of Jakarta life. Proximity to parks and recreational areas can be a draw for some. Travel to and from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is comparable to other Sunter areas, typically taking 40-55 minutes by taxi or ride-sharing. This neighbourhood offers a comfortable and practical base for exploring Tanjung Priok and beyond, especially for those seeking a residential feel.

Even more upscale dining experiences within the district are unlikely to exceed ₱ 300 to ₱ 500 (approximately $6 to $10 USD) per person, making Tanjung Priok a very budget-friendly destination for food lovers from the US, Europe, and India.

When dining in Tanjung Priok, embracing local customs will enhance your experience. Meals are typically eaten with a fork and spoon, with the fork used to push food onto the spoon. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10%. It’s common for meals to be served family-style, so be prepared to share dishes. Remember that while many Indonesians speak some English, learning a few basic Bahasa Indonesia phrases like "Terima kasih" (Thank you) and "Enak sekali" (Very delicious) will be greatly appreciated.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Tanjung Priok

Navigating the cultural landscape of Tanjung Priok requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions. As in much of Indonesia, politeness and humility are highly valued. Always use your right hand when giving or receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. Understanding these nuances will help you avoid unintentional offense and foster positive connections with the local community.

When visiting landmarks like Walang Senja 98 or SMAN 13, observe local behaviour. While photography is generally permitted, always ask for permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially children. Be mindful of noise levels and avoid disruptive behaviour. Queuing culture is present but can sometimes be less orderly than in Western countries; patience and a calm demeanor are key. Respecting these simple guidelines will ensure your visit to these local points of interest is smooth and appreciated by the community.

Practical safety in Tanjung Priok is similar to other urban areas in Jakarta. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. For navigation, having offline maps downloaded on your phone is highly recommended, as mobile data can sometimes be unreliable in certain areas.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number for police in Indonesia is 110 and for ambulance is 118. While there isn't a specific tourist police unit in Tanjung Priok, local police are generally helpful. For Filipino travellers, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is located at Jl. Imam Bonjol No. 8, Menteng, Jakarta Pusat. It's always wise to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to be aware of any advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip.

Getting to Tanjung Priok and Getting Around

For Filipino travellers planning a trip to Tanjung Priok, the journey typically begins with a flight to Jakarta's primary international gateway, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to CGK usually involve one or two layovers, with total travel times ranging from 7 to 12 hours, and costs in PHP varying significantly based on the airline and booking time, but often falling between ₱ 8,000 to ₱ 15,000 for a round trip. Upon arrival at CGK, you can book flight connections or arrange for onward travel to Tanjung Priok.

Once you've arrived in Jakarta, getting to Tanjung Priok is achievable through various transport options. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available at CGK and offer the most convenient way to reach your accommodation in Tanjung Priok, with journey times typically ranging from 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, costing approximately ₱ 150 to ₱ 250 (around $3-$5 USD). For a more local experience and budget-friendly option, TransJakarta buses serve routes connecting various parts of the city, though they may require transfers and can be more time-consuming.

The best time to visit Tanjung Priok, and Jakarta in general, is during the dry season, which runs from June to September. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the city and its surroundings. Hotel prices might see a slight increase during this peak tourist period, but they remain relatively affordable compared to other major Asian capitals. Shoulder seasons, such as April-May and October-November, offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Before you depart for Tanjung Priok, ensure you have your essential travel documents in order. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is essential for street food vendors and smaller shops. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at CGK for affordable data and calls. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Indonesia, including the Tanjung Priok district, a visa-free entry policy is generally in place for short stays. This allows Filipino citizens to enter Indonesia for tourism or business purposes for a period of up to 30 days without the need for a pre-arranged visa. It is crucial to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia and that you have proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian immigration checkpoints, including those at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). You will typically be asked to present your passport and may need to provide details about your itinerary and accommodation. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free facility, it is essential to adhere strictly to the permitted length of stay, as overstaying can result in penalties. Always confirm the latest regulations with official Indonesian immigration sources before your travel.

While the visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders is a significant convenience, policies can change. It is highly recommended that all travellers verify the most current visa requirements and entry regulations with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines or the official Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia website before booking flights and making travel arrangements. Ensuring your visa status is confirmed beforehand will prevent any last-minute issues and guarantee a smooth entry into Indonesia for your visit to Tanjung Priok.
