The kids were happy, the room was clean and spacious, and they didn't want to go home. The pool also made the kids want to stay in for a long time, and the private pool was really nice, but only had limited hours. The staff were all friendly, especially the lady who let me try out the private pool even though I forgot to book it. Thank you, sis!! It was really impressive 🫶

I stayed with my family after returning from Umrah. I chose the executive family room, which was very large and perfectly adequate for four adults. For a very affordable price, I managed to secure a large, spacious room. The hotel's location is also strategic, close to Pasar Baru and numerous hawkers. The breakfast was delicious, though not extensive, but perfectly adequate and simple. I'll stay at the Alia Hotel again with my extended family.

A very strategic location on the edge of a major road, there is a minimarket, bank and many places to eat. Moreover, it is very close to the new market which has a lot of sales there. Access to everywhere is easy, bajaj has an online pick-up and drop-off service and is also easy to find. For the room itself, it is very spacious, clean, fragrant, the bathroom and water are also clean, the AC is very cold, and the mattress is soft. The staff there are also friendly. If you bring a large family, it is suitable, because the room is that spacious. Highly recommended.

Even more upscale dining experiences are generally more affordable than in many Western countries, with a three-course meal for two at a mid-tier restaurant costing around ₱ 600 to ₱ 1,000 (approximately USD 12.00 to USD 20.00).

When dining in Sawah Besar, it's helpful to be aware of local customs. While tipping is not always mandatory, it is appreciated for good service, with a small amount of 5-10% often being customary in sit-down restaurants. Meal times generally follow a pattern similar to other parts of Indonesia, with lunch being the main meal of the day, typically between 12 PM and 2 PM. Be adventurous and try local specialties, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from locals or hotel staff. Observing how locals eat can also provide valuable insights into etiquette.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Sawah Besar

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a smooth and enjoyable trip to Sawah Besar. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, and a friendly demeanor goes a long way. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite "Selamat pagi" (good morning) or "Selamat siang" (good afternoon). When interacting with locals, particularly elders, it's polite to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is sometimes considered unclean. Modesty in dress is also appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites.

When visiting prominent landmarks like the Istiqlal Mosque and the Pasar Baru area, adhering to specific etiquette is important. For the Istiqlal Mosque, women should ensure their hair, arms, and legs are covered, and men should wear long trousers and shirts. Modest attire is generally recommended for all visitors to religious sites. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking close-up photos of people. In Pasar Baru, while the atmosphere is lively, maintaining a respectful attitude and being mindful of personal space is appreciated.

Safety in Sawah Besar is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets like Pasar Baru. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is highly recommended, as they offer fixed prices and track your journey. While taxis are available, ensure they use a meter. Having offline maps and translation apps on your phone can be incredibly useful for navigation and communication, especially if you venture into less tourist-frequented areas.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Indonesia is 112 for police and ambulance services. For Filipino travellers, it's advisable to know the contact details of the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, which can provide assistance in various situations. It's also prudent to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and lost belongings. Staying informed about any travel advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a good practice to ensure a safe and well-prepared journey to Sawah Besar.

Getting to Sawah Besar and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Sawah Besar involves flying into Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Flights from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB) typically involve one stopover, often in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with total travel times ranging from 6 to 10 hours. Direct flights are less common but may be available depending on the airline and season. The estimated cost for a round-trip ticket can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 25,000 for an economy class seat, especially if you book flight tickets in advance. From CGK, Sawah Besar is approximately a 45-60 minute drive, depending on traffic.

Once you arrive in Jakarta and are heading to Sawah Besar, the most convenient way to get around the district and the wider city is by using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek. These services offer both car and motorcycle options and are generally affordable and reliable. For longer distances or to avoid traffic, the TransJakarta bus system is an extensive and cost-effective option, with many routes serving the Sawah Besar area. Taxis are also available, but it's crucial to ensure they use a meter. For a more local experience, consider the commuter train network, which connects various parts of Jakarta.

The best time to visit Sawah Besar, and Jakarta in general, is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to September. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and markets. While this period can be considered peak season, leading to slightly higher hotel prices and more crowds, the weather is generally more pleasant. The shoulder months of April-May and October-November can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer tourists.

Before you depart for Sawah Besar, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels might accept credit cards, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local eateries. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access, essential for navigation and communication apps. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a visit to Indonesia to explore Sawah Besar, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, usually up to 30 days. This allows for convenient travel without the need for pre-application at an embassy. However, it is crucial to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry and that you have proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry, if applicable, involves presenting your valid passport and potentially completing a simple arrival card upon landing at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). While no visa fee is charged for visa-free entry, travellers should be prepared for potential immigration inquiries regarding the purpose of their visit and sufficient funds to cover their stay. It is always recommended to check the latest visa regulations with the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines or the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia prior to your travel dates, as policies can change.

While visa-free entry is common for short tourist stays, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the most current visa policies directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before booking flights and making travel arrangements. This confirmation is essential to avoid any last-minute issues at immigration. Ensuring your passport meets the validity requirements and having all necessary documentation readily available will contribute to a smooth entry process into Indonesia for your visit to Sawah Besar.
