Hello, this is my first time in Semarang. I booked a hotel through an app and found a pretty good one in the reviews. Oh, and it turned out to be a good hotel. It was comfortable, not too crowded and not too quiet, clean and spacious too. The location is strategic. I was on the 19th floor, so the view was really great. There's a swimming pool and cafe on the 30th floor. And the breakfast was delicious and plentiful. For the price I booked, it was really worth it.

This was my first time staying at Ibis Style Simpang Lima Semarang. My family and I stayed for one night before returning to Jakarta. The location is very strategic, in the city center. The service was very friendly. I was amazed by the beautiful room decor. The room was located on the third floor, close to the restaurant. The bed was large. The food was quite varied and very tasty. We will definitely stay there again next time we visit Semarang.

The location is one of its biggest advantages. It's situated near the iconic Simpang Lima Semarang, making it very convenient to reach almost every major destination in Semarang like Lawang Sewu, Kota Lama, etc. Whether you're visiting for sightseeing, culinary spots, or business, this hotel is an excellent base. The hospitality was outstanding. Every staff member I met was warm, polite, and genuinely helpful, even the security guards greeted guests with a smile and offered help to carry the baggage, which made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was the hotel's café. The food is surprisingly affordable for a hotel price, with prices that are very reasonable while still offering good quality. There's also a karaoke area and a well-designed public space where guests can relax or spend time with friends and family. The hotel also has a swimming pool and is very kid-friendly, making it a great choice for families traveling with children. The room itself was comfortable and well-maintained. I did encounter a minor issue with the bathroom door in my room, which was a bit difficult to close, but it wasn't a major problem and still okay with that. Overall, the room was pleasant, and the room service was prompt and reliable. Considering the location, facilities, service, and overall experience, the price is incredibly reasonable and offers excellent value for money. Overall, my 3-night stay was enjoyable from start to finish. If you're looking for an affordable hotel with friendly service, good facilities, and a strategic location in Semarang, I highly recommend Hotel Andelir.

Basically, from 2017 to 2026, I always stayed here every time I came to Semarang (I always went back to Semarang every year to visit my parents' graves). The security guard even knew me very well 🤭. It's the most convenient place, you can just walk to food, and even walk to Simpang Lima. The location is truly strategic... The best!

Dishes like *Lumpia Basah* (fresh spring rolls) and *Tahu Gimbal* (fried tofu with shrimp paste sauce and vegetables) are Semarang icons, offering a distinct taste of Javanese culinary tradition. Exploring these local delicacies provides a deeper connection to the culture and a truly memorable dining experience.

For an authentic taste of South Semarang, exploring its diverse dining venues is essential. Areas like Pleburan and Randusari are known for their concentration of eateries, ranging from bustling street food stalls to more established restaurants. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most local eateries adhere to Halal practices. Look for the Halal logo or inquire with restaurant staff to ensure your dining choices align with your dietary needs, offering peace of mind as you explore the local cuisine.

The affordability of dining in South Semarang is a significant draw for international travellers. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱50-₱100 (around $1-2 USD), offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200-₱500 (around $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal, which is considerably less than what travellers from the US or Europe might expect. Even upscale dining experiences remain relatively affordable, making South Semarang an excellent destination for food lovers who want to indulge without breaking the bank.

Navigating dining etiquette in South Semarang is generally straightforward for international visitors. It's customary to use your right hand for eating, especially with rice-based dishes, though cutlery is widely available and accepted. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. Meal times are similar to Western schedules, with lunch typically between 12 PM and 2 PM and dinner from 6 PM onwards. Being open to trying new flavours and respecting local customs will enhance your culinary journey.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in South Semarang

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to South Semarang. While generally a welcoming place, a few cultural nuances might catch international visitors off guard. For instance, public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and it's advisable to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional neighbourhoods. Greetings are important; a polite nod and a smile go a long way, and learning a few basic Indonesian phrases like "Terima kasih" (thank you) will be greatly appreciated by locals.

When visiting specific landmarks or establishments like Aston Inn Pandanaran - Semarang or Louis Kienne Hotel Simpang Lima, it's good practice to be mindful of their specific rules. While hotels are accustomed to international guests, maintaining a respectful demeanour is always appreciated. For cultural sites, dress codes might be more stringent, often requiring shoulders and knees to be covered. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially in more traditional settings.

South Semarang is generally a safe city for tourists, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is recommended, as they offer transparent pricing and driver information, which can be more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street. Having offline maps and translation apps on your phone can also be incredibly helpful for navigation and communication.

In case of emergencies, the general police number in Indonesia is 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 or 119. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force in every area, local police are usually helpful. For Filipino travellers, it's important to know the location of the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, which can provide assistance in emergencies. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or travel disruptions, ensuring a safer and more secure trip to South Semarang.

Getting to South Semarang and Getting Around

Reaching South Semarang from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves a flight to an international airport in Indonesia, followed by a domestic connection or onward travel. Major Philippine hubs like Manila (NAIA/MNL) and Cebu (CEB) offer flights to Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB), which are the most common entry points for reaching Central Java. From these Indonesian gateways, travellers can then take a domestic flight to Semarang's Achmad Yani International Airport (SRG), or opt for train travel, which is a scenic and comfortable option. Flight durations can vary, but expect a total travel time of around 6-10 hours, excluding layovers. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better fares.

Once you arrive at Achmad Yani International Airport (SRG), the most convenient way to reach South Semarang and its various districts is by taxi or ride-hailing services like Grab. The journey to the city centre typically takes 20-40 minutes, depending on traffic and your specific hotel location. Within South Semarang, getting around is relatively easy. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and offer a cost-effective way to travel between neighbourhoods. For shorter distances, local transport options like *ojek* (motorcycle taxis) are available, though they are best suited for solo travellers. Public buses also operate, but navigating their routes can be challenging for first-time visitors.

The best time to visit South Semarang generally falls during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. The shoulder months of April and October can also be pleasant, with fewer crowds and potentially lower hotel prices. While the wet season (October to April) brings occasional rain, it rarely disrupts travel for extended periods and can offer a more lush, green landscape, appealing to travellers from India and Southeast Asia who are accustomed to tropical climates.

Before you depart for South Semarang, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels and some larger establishments may accept credit cards, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local transport. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival is a good idea for staying connected and using data services for navigation and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps, a translation app, and ride-hailing applications.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to South Semarang, understanding Indonesia's visa policy is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. This visa exemption is a significant convenience, simplifying travel arrangements. It's important to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia and that you have proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian immigration checkpoints. You will typically be asked to present your passport and may need to fill out a simple arrival card. While no visa fee is charged for this exemption, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change. Having a confirmed hotel booking for your stay in South Semarang is also often a requirement for immigration.

While visa-free entry is standard for Philippine passport holders, it is always recommended to verify the most up-to-date visa requirements directly with Indonesia's official immigration authority or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. This is to ensure you have the latest information regarding entry regulations, permitted lengths of stay, and any specific documentation that may be required. Confirming your visa status before booking flights is a wise step to avoid any last-minute complications and ensure a smooth journey to South Semarang.
