As a repeat guest, I chose Hotel Neo Candi Simpang Lima Semarang again and was not disappointed. I stayed on July 21–22, 2026, in a Superior Premiere Room, which included breakfast for two. I originally came to Semarang for treatment at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, but because the doctor was suddenly on leave, I ended up taking advantage of the time for a staycation at the hotel. The service was very friendly and professional from check-in. I also received a surprise welcome pizza from the hotel, which was an added bonus and made my stay even more memorable. The room was clean and comfortable, with a soft bed, very cool air conditioning, fast and stable Wi-Fi, and a Smart TV. The view from the room was also very beautiful, even with a mountain view, which made the atmosphere even more relaxing. Breakfast was quite delicious with a variety of menu options. The hotel's location is also very strategic, close to Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, various tourist attractions in Semarang, the Superindo Supermarket (which is integrated with the hotel), and many cafes and restaurants nearby. Although it's still more convenient to get to these places by car, access is very easy. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay. This hotel offers excellent service, complete facilities, comfortable rooms, and a strategic location. It's highly recommended for business, medical treatment, or a staycation with family or friends. Thank you to the entire team at Hotel Neo Candi Simpang Lima Semarang. Top Markotop! I will definitely stay again.

Loved staying here. I booked a Deluxe Twin Bed Non Smoking room. The location is behind DP Mall, a 5-minute walk to Lawang Sewu, a 5-minute drive to Simpang Lima. Strategic location to everywhere, nice room, large bed fits 2 adults and 2 children with plenty of space. The shower water outlet is large, hot water is okay. The room is soundproof from the outside. The staff are very good, fast. The restaurant is not too big, the food choices are also not too many but no problem, the taste is quite good. I stayed 3 nights so far satisfied, I will recommend if anyone wants to go to Semarang. Thank you Awann Sewu.

Dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Sate Ayam (chicken satay), and Gado-Gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce) are widely available and prepared according to Halal practices. Exploring areas like the bustling Simpang Lima or local night markets will reveal a plethora of Halal-certified food stalls and restaurants.

The cost of dining in Mijen offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local warungs provide incredibly affordable meals, often costing as little as ₱50-₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD), allowing for extensive culinary exploration on a budget. Mid-range restaurants offer a more comfortable dining experience with main courses typically ranging from ₱200-₱400 (approximately $4-8 USD). Even upscale dining establishments remain reasonably priced compared to Western standards, with a three-course meal for two often falling between ₱800-₱1,500 (approximately $16-30 USD), making Mijen a food lover's delight.

Navigating dining etiquette in Mijen is straightforward for most international visitors. It's customary to eat with your right hand, especially when dining at local warungs, though cutlery is provided in most restaurants. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. Meal times generally follow a pattern of breakfast, lunch around noon, and dinner in the evening. Being open to trying new dishes and showing appreciation for the food are key to a positive dining experience in Mijen.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Mijen

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching experience in Mijen. Javanese culture, which heavily influences Mijen, places a strong emphasis on politeness, respect for elders, and maintaining harmony. Visitors should be mindful of their interactions, using polite language and avoiding overly direct or confrontational behaviour. A gentle approach and a willingness to learn are always appreciated by locals, contributing to a more positive and authentic cultural exchange during your stay in this Indonesian region.

When visiting Mijen, particularly its religious sites or more traditional areas, dressing modestly is advisable. This typically means covering shoulders and knees. While tourist-friendly areas might be more relaxed, it's always best to err on the side of caution. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of individuals, especially in rural settings or during cultural events. Observing local behaviour, such as removing shoes before entering homes or certain establishments, is a sign of respect and helps in blending in with the local community.

Safety in Mijen is generally good, with petty crime being uncommon in most tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to remain vigilant. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Utilizing reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is a safe and convenient way to get around the city. For Filipino travellers, it's always recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and lost belongings, providing an extra layer of security during your trip to Indonesia.

In case of emergencies in Mijen, the local emergency number for police and ambulance is typically 112. For Filipino citizens travelling to Indonesia, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary point of contact for consular assistance. It's advisable to register your travel with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your departure. For any urgent concerns or information regarding overseas Filipino workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) can also provide support. Staying informed and prepared ensures a safe and enjoyable journey.

Getting to Mijen and Getting Around

Reaching Mijen from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves flying into the nearest major international airport, which serves the broader Semarang region. Flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Indonesia usually require at least one layover, often in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or Jakarta. The total travel time can range from 8 to 15 hours, depending on the layover duration and destination airport. While direct flights are rare, the connectivity through regional hubs makes Mijen accessible. You can easily book flight tickets that suit your schedule and budget.

Once you arrive at the airport serving Mijen, such as Ahmad Yani International Airport (SRG) in Semarang, you have several options to reach your accommodation. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available and offer a convenient way to get to your hotel, with fares typically ranging from ₱300-₱600 (approximately $6-12 USD) depending on the distance. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, local buses or minibuses (known as 'angkot') operate on various routes, though they can be more challenging for first-time visitors to navigate.

The best time to visit Mijen generally falls within the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city and its surroundings. While the wet season (October to April) can bring occasional heavy rainfall, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. For travellers from the Philippines, the climate in Mijen is comparable to many parts of the country, with warm temperatures year-round.

Before departing for Mijen, it's essential to have a few things in order. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash for smaller purchases and local markets is advisable. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for easier communication and data access. Essential apps to download include a reliable map application and a translation tool.

Visa Information for Indonesia

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Mijen, understanding the visa requirements for Indonesia is a crucial step. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing for stays of up to 30 days. This facility simplifies travel planning significantly, as no prior visa application is typically required. However, it is always recommended to confirm the latest immigration policies with official Indonesian government sources or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before your trip, as regulations can change.

When entering Indonesia, you will need to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of arrival and that you possess proof of onward or return travel. While a visa is not required for short tourist stays for Philippine nationals, immigration officers may ask for evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your visit. It is also wise to have your hotel bookings confirmed, as this can serve as proof of accommodation. These requirements are standard for international travel and help ensure a smooth entry process.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, policies can be subject to change. Therefore, it is strongly advised for all travellers to verify the most up-to-date visa regulations directly with the official immigration authorities of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines well in advance of booking flights or making travel arrangements. This proactive approach will help prevent any last-minute complications and ensure your journey to Mijen proceeds without a hitch.
