Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the origin city. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially during off-peak periods.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a more scenic journey, bus travel is an option, though it is considerably longer. Buses depart from various terminals in Manila, heading to Puerto Princesa. The journey can take anywhere from 10 to 12 hours, sometimes more, depending on the route and stops. Fares are generally much lower than flights, making it an economical choice for extended trips.

Driving to Puerto Princesa is possible for those coming from nearby islands or provinces accessible by ferry and land routes. This involves a combination of driving and potentially ferry crossings. The travel time can be extensive, spanning multiple days, and requires careful planning regarding routes, accommodations, and vehicle maintenance. Toll fees and fuel costs should also be factored into the overall budget for this option.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, typically from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit for travelers who prefer sunny skies and calmer seas, ideal for island hopping and outdoor activities. Temperatures during this period are warm, averaging around 28-30 degrees Celsius.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can range from light showers to heavier downpours. While this season might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can also affect outdoor plans, especially boat tours and beach activities. However, the rain often brings a lushness to the landscape, and the showers are usually intermittent, allowing for exploration between them.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, indulging in fresh seafood is an absolute must. The city is renowned for its abundant marine life, and restaurants offer a variety of preparations. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are common and delicious choices. Look for local eateries that serve "kinilaw," a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, and spices – a refreshing and flavorful dish.

Another local specialty to seek out is "Tamilok," a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees and typically eaten raw, often dipped in vinegar. While it might sound adventurous, it's a unique delicacy that many visitors try. For those who prefer something more familiar, Filipino comfort food like "Adobo" (meat stewed in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns) and "Sinigang" (sour soup, usually with tamarind broth) are widely available and always satisfying.

Don't forget to try "Halo-Halo" for dessert, a popular Filipino mixed-dessert drink made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with ice cream and leche flan. It's the perfect way to cool down on a warm Palawan afternoon. Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will often lead you to the most authentic and budget-friendly culinary experiences.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino culture in Puerto Princesa is generally warm and hospitable. A common greeting is "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Kumusta" (How are you?). It's polite to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority, showing respect. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service. Be mindful of local customs when visiting religious sites, dressing modestly.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel readily accessible.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be helpful for getting around the city. A translation app can be useful if you encounter phrases you don't understand, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Having a local currency converter app can also be handy for managing your budget.

Average hotel. I booked it because of the hottub but of course it did not work. They charge 35 pesos for a very small bucket of ice. There food is very pricey. Staff is hit and misd, sometimes nice and sometimes not. Once its your day to checkout the staff true colors come out. Very rude people. No thank you for you stay, safe travels or even a goodbye. I would not wasted your money and stay here. It is not close to anything and over priced for what you get

I always had a great experience staying here at Acacia Tree Garden Hotel in Puerto Princesa Palawan, I started staying here since the year 2013 when my whole family from United States had our first family vacation to Philippines. Acacia maintained everything what every guests are looking for from courteous staff to hotel cleanliness and first class service. It has been 13 years and I kept on choosing Acacia Hotel to be my accommodation everytime I visit the country. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely stay. The rooms face the inner garden with pool. It's beautiful and peaceful. Good service.

The pool was not maintained. The property was undergoing construction and I was not notified. The staff at the restaurant was unattentive.

Our booking included continental breakfast for 4 but was denied by staff. We’re given a menu to order for a fee.

Pool and lobby were nice outdoor spaces to hang out and relax after a long tour day to the river. We ordered food to be delivered and bought drinks at the liquor store

The property has potential, giving it an island vibe setting however the room where we stayed smells musty and the bathroom sink faucet was loose leaving water coming from underneath the lavatory cabinet.

Our stay was very comfy, staff was great in care, beds were soft! Although i asked for a private patio, we had table, no chairs. Not a biggy though, not much to look at, and you have the pool and reception area to chillax. Overall very good, 5 *

room - old and entrance door - can see through. even with curtain. noisy as it is next to pool area - drinking guests in the night. Front desk personel on arrival - sarcastic , not professional, dressed like a tourist. Breakfast - no word - horror, terrible... - cook to fire... if there is any - which i doubt . it is hard to screw bfst.
