Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Boracay Island from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest airport to the island. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. From Caticlan Airport, a short tricycle ride takes you to the jetty port for a boat transfer to Boracay.

Alternatively, you can fly into Kalibo International Airport (KLO). Flights to Kalibo are often more frequent and sometimes cheaper, with fares around PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 round trip. However, the journey from Kalibo to Boracay is longer, involving a 1.5 to 2-hour bus or van ride to Caticlan Jetty Port, followed by the boat transfer. This option is suitable if you find significantly cheaper airfare.

For those preferring land travel, buses from Manila to Caticlan are available, though this is a lengthy journey of about 10 to 12 hours. Bus fares typically range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,800 one way. This option is best for travelers on a very tight budget who have ample time for travel. Driving your own vehicle is also possible, involving a ferry crossing from Batangas to Caticlan, but it is a long and potentially costly trip due to fuel and ferry charges.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

The most popular time to visit Boracay Island is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. This period offers sunny skies, calm seas, and pleasant weather, making it ideal for beach activities, water sports, and island hopping. The peak months are typically December to February, when many Filipinos and international tourists flock to the island for the holidays and cooler weather.

For travelers seeking fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of November and April can be a good compromise. The weather is still generally favorable, though there might be occasional brief showers. The period from May to October is the wet season, characterized by more frequent rainfall and stronger winds, which can sometimes lead to choppy seas and affect outdoor activities. However, this season also offers a more tranquil experience and can be more budget-friendly.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in fresh seafood, and Boracay offers an abundance of it. Head to D'Talipapa, near Station 2, where you can buy your catch of the day from the market and have it cooked to your preference at a nearby restaurant. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are local favorites, prepared with simple yet delicious seasonings.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw at many local eateries and restaurants along White Beach.

For a taste of classic Filipino comfort food, try Adobo. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy soy sauce and vinegar-based stew is a staple. Many restaurants in Boracay serve their own versions of this beloved dish. Also, don't forget to sample Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream – perfect for cooling down.

Consider trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, originating from Iloilo. It’s a filling and flavorful dish that offers a different culinary experience. For a quick and satisfying snack, look for Taho, a sweet silken tofu dessert with sago pearls and arnibal (brown sugar syrup), often sold by vendors in the morning.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island is known for its friendly and welcoming local culture. Filipinos are generally hospitable, and it's appreciated if visitors show respect for local customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Always greet locals with a smile and be polite in your interactions. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can go a long way.

Safety on Boracay Island is generally good, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas. Be cautious of overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help or deals. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually available through the front desk, and it's good to have the numbers of your embassy or consulate handy if you are an international visitor.

Essential apps for your trip include a reliable navigation app like Google Maps to help you find your way around the island and its various stations. A weather app is crucial for planning your daily activities, especially during the transitional seasons. Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English fluently, although English is widely understood in tourist areas.

For booking transportation and activities, the Traveloka app is indispensable. You can use it to book flights, accommodations, and even tours and attractions, often with exclusive deals. Having these apps on your smartphone will significantly enhance your travel experience, making it smoother and more convenient throughout your stay in Boracay.

Love this place. Great for the price. Love their outside bar, pool..Steps away from D'Mall. Close to everything...beach, grocery store, restaurants. Staff is great. Free breakfast is good, nothing special but you always get eggs, rice, and fresh fruit. I'v been to Boracay 7 times and once I found this place, it's where I stay.

The hotel facilities have to be updated. I have to request for a newer TV set as the one in the roon is an old one and no remote controlled. I have to get the door locks changed as we get locked in th bathroom and found it hard to open the room door from day 1. I found that there is a shortage of staff and cannot attend to any request quickly as it took several days to attend to any problems we had. Staff are very friendly and attentive but not able to do things because of the shortage of staff.

This hotel was very disappointing. Just from the outside, the hotel was very dirty. There was garbage everywhere and so much junk in front of the building. Piles of garbage filled the hallways & stairways. Let's talk about the rooms. The rooms were very dirty. In our first room, the toilet was leaking so they moved us the second day. That room didn't smell or look much better. They smelt awful and unpleasant. There were insects in the bed frame, holes in the walls and water stains in the ceiling. The linens and towels are very worn out with stains and holes. There were also piles of dirt behind the fridge. The bathrooms were SLIPPERY and the water heaters are so high, you must go on your tippy toes to reach it. I even slipped when I was trying to reach the water heater. There wasn't even a closet to store clothes. Now lets talk customer service. There was no manager on site to complain to. The service was poor. The staff didn't clean our room during our four day stay and the safety box was broken. When you leave, you must leave your keys to the receptionist every time you go out, but they just keep the keys behind the counter. It was not secured. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anymore OR go back there.

The place looks very nice from the outside, convenient also coz it's close to d mall. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. Hands down the best staff I have met. But the rooms are just a ok to sleep in but not really to relax. The bathroom is just convenient. If you want a place to just crash in after a long day and after a night of partying this is your place. But if u want to relax and just lounge around after a long day this is not the place due to a lot of constructions.

Our stay in Grand Boracay Resort was a little above average. The hotel signage along the main road was not very easy to spot. We didn't bother to ask for directions and went ahead and consulted the GPS and maps which was not the best way to go about it. It was a treat to find that the place was somewhat hidden behind the busy alleys of the Boracay open mall (D'mall). The resort was a lot quieter than the other resorts in Station 2. The receptionists and service staff were nice and courteous enough throughout our stay there. There are still a few areas for improvement in the common areas as well as inside the rooms and toilets. I'd like to see better towels and floor mats. The bedsheets were nice and clean. The airconditioning worked well enough to cool the room but the remote wasn't working properly. The refrigerator could be better. The toilet was clean enough and had liquid soap dispensers. Unfortunately, there was no bidet hose spray.

At check in, we had to upgrade from a superior room booked and paid for ahead of time to a deluxe room as we ended up with a third person, who cannot be accommodated in a superior room. They asked us to pay at check in the additional fee for upgrading which we did. After paying up front, they brought us to the crappiest room we have ever seen in all of our extensive travel history. It took several complaints and calls to the front desk before they finally transferred us to a supposedly deluxe room which was a lot better but at that point, we were so mad and disappointed that nobody checked to make sure we got the right room in the first place. We should not have to complain after paying added fees for the upgrade. Warning for others. Make sure you check the room first before paying.

Staffs are not cooperative. There are hidden and unexpected charges aside from your booking. The room phone is not working, and the maintenance guy doesn't help either. You are forced to go from the top floor to the reception to ask for assistance but all your request were just ignored. In the end, they will tell you that the phone is not really working on that part of the hotel because there is no line, and the phone unit is just a show. Food is not good. Cats are roaming in the dining hall, small and big. They will give you the username and password for your hotel room but the wifi is not really working in your room. When you ask them, they will tell you that the wifi is working in the lobby only. What's the need for room username and password anyway. Facilities are defective, from dresser, to the toilet bowl flusher, and the safety deposit box. They will only fix them after you showed them that you're angry and fed up following up so many times. Not a good experience staying with this hotel. I don't recommend this hotel, look for other hotels nearby.

The hotel is at a great location by D-mall, and short walk to the beach. The hotel was OK, but rooms not very clean. I found a used tooth-pick in the shower, and the bedsheets was full of holes and stains.

Staff are very friendly and attentive but not able to do things because of the shortage of staff.

has access to the d'mall then to the beach. it was a quite season which we really appreciate because the beach area is busy and noisy. we like the breakfast offered every day. the staff are really helpful. Flor of reception goes out of her way to help us. All the other staff were nice to have around with their friendly reception. online booking and reception assured wifi in all rooms, but wifi is only available in the reception area.
