Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, flying is the most convenient way to reach Cebu City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from Manila (NAIA) to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and airline promotions, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka.

Travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Davao, Cagayan de Oro, or Iloilo also have direct flight options to MCIA. These flights are generally shorter, often around 1 to 1.5 hours. Similar to flights from Manila, booking in advance is key to securing the best prices. For those who prefer land and sea travel, ferry services are available from various ports, though this is a significantly longer journey, often taking over 24 hours.

While less common for inter-island travel to Cebu, bus services are primarily used for travel within the island of Cebu itself or from nearby provinces. For those coming from Luzon via ferry, the final leg might involve a bus journey. If you are considering driving your own vehicle, be prepared for a long journey involving multiple ferry crossings and extensive driving on highways. Toll fees will also apply, and it's essential to plan your route and stops carefully.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is often considered the best time to visit for travelers who prefer less rain and more sunshine. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Peak tourist season often falls within this period, especially around Christmas, New Year, and the Sinulog Festival in January.

The wet season runs from June to November. While this period can bring more frequent rainfall, including occasional heavy downpours, it doesn't necessarily mean constant rain. Showers are often brief, and you can still enjoy sunny periods. Visiting during the wet season can also mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of appeal for budget-conscious travelers. The Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, is a major cultural event that draws huge crowds, so if you plan to attend, book your accommodation and flights well in advance.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is renowned for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of flavors that reflect its rich heritage. One dish you absolutely must try is Lechon Cebu. Unlike other versions, Cebu's lechon is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, often seasoned simply with salt and native spices. Many restaurants in Cebu City serve excellent lechon, with CNT Lechon and Zubuchon being popular choices for an authentic taste.

Another Cebuano specialty is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and calamansi juice. It's a refreshing and zesty appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find delicious kinilaw in many local eateries and seafood restaurants across the city.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a characteristic Filipino dessert that Cebu does exceptionally well. This icy concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring. Many cafes and restaurants offer their own unique take on this beloved treat.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Dried Mangoes, a popular pasalubong (souvenir). These sweet and chewy mango slices are a taste of the Philippines' abundant fruit. You can find them in various souvenir shops and supermarkets. For a more substantial meal, try Tuslob Buwa, a unique Cebuano dish made from pork liver and brain, simmered in broth and spices, often served with rice or puto. It’s a local delicacy that offers a truly authentic taste of Cebuano cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is a blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influences, and modern Filipino life. Cebuanos are generally warm and hospitable people. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. While English is widely spoken and understood, learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites.

Safety in Cebu City is comparable to other major urban centers in the Philippines. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. If you encounter any emergencies, the local police emergency number is typically 117. It's also wise to have the contact details of your hotel readily available.

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are very popular and convenient for booking transport. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

We had a nice room (410) but had to be moved our last night! This was frustrating as everything had to be packed up and relocated. Second room was smaller and was for wheelchair people. Room (418)was not as nice and we were disappointed that we were not given choice of a nicer room, the air conditioner was very noisy all night. We felt like we paid for a deluxe room and got a smaller room. A couple staff members were very helpful. The front staff seemed frazzled, but they were nice. The front entrance allows smokers and one afternoon, they left fast food wrappers and other trash all over the ground. Cigarette butts also. Your staff did clean it up and I feel sorry they have to clean up after other people who are slobs. Maybe something for trash and cigarette butts could be looked into.

Pro: The hotel is absolutely first class. The staff are excellent, professional, amicable and respectful! The rooms are better than most US hotels like in Vegas. Amenities in the room outclass most. It’s a fabulous place to stay. I recommend to everyone to stay in this hotel. I will definitely come back here! Con: My only comment is the bed not suitable for my achy back but that’s understandable. And lastly, breakfast can use a little improvement with respect to choices. But the omelette station right there as you walk in at the dining room is one heck of a beautiful and perfect idea! Thank you everyone!❤️

The front staff were not very helpful. Food was not worth paying for. The only energetic staff were the front door men showing you the way out and were to get decent food to eat.

I was charged upon check in. I got a huge migraine after landing in Cebu on Jan 3rd. The room was only booked for a single night before we moved onto our other destination, so I was just focused on getting into the room to rest. I was charged about about 7700 pesos for the room. We paid in PHP cash. After we left there and I was thinking about it, I realized that room has actually PREPAID since October. I should not have been charged anything at all. They never gave me a reciept, I keep all my reciepts and could not find this one even just the very next day, and could not recollect them offering me one. They gave me a deposit slip (php1000) that I was told to teturn the next day to recieve my deposit which I did. I got the money, they took the deposit slip. While I rested the others in my group were free to explore. They reported the breakfast food was cold, the pool inaccessible. The gym had no ventilation. At least parking was convenient. I want a refund.

Within walking distance from the hotel is a shopping center with whatever you want, with many shops and restaurants. Although a busy area, the walking around the neighborhood is reasonably safe. The room itself was very clean and comfortable and with good service and a nice breakfast buffet. Plus very friendly people and service staff.

Staff was very polite and attentive. Room was large and had a bath tub which is rare to find here. At the bar, Miguel, was a really professional and awesone at his job. Live music every night was an added bonus. Great location, too.

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Elizabeth Cebu. The hotel is very accessible to everywhere — malls, restaurants, hospitals, and tourist spots are all just a short distance away, which made everything so convenient for us. The location is truly perfect, especially if you want to be near the heart of the city. The staff were warm, accommodating, and always ready to assist with a smile. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and spacious, making it easy to relax after a long day. The ambiance feels cozy and welcoming, and the overall experience was smooth and stress-free. I highly recommend Hotel Elizabeth Cebu for anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and excellent service in Cebu. We will definitely stay here again!
