We stayed at XYZ hotel for about three weeks while vacationing there in tacloban city. All the staff were very friendly, respectful and polite. Our room was kept clean and comfortable. The only issues were that the WiFi keeps dropping off and had to re-log back in. The first 11 days we were at the “ Fine room Queen”5th floor room 503 which was okay, there were molds in the shower area and the air conditioning wasn’t as cold as it should. Also the trash cans didn’t have plastic bags in them. I had to request for plastic bags to be put inside the trash cans. The sink was clogged at first but then it was cleaned up and declogged. Then we moved to “ fantastic room” (6th floor room 610) which I love the most because it was cleaner than the “fine room” overall my room was clean and our trash cans did have a plastic bag in them. Also the air condition was colder this time. I loved the fantastic room and will stay again the next time we visit tacloban city. Oh the pool area was nice and clean as well and food was great too just wished there were more options for breakfast menu. Also the only thing I didn’t like there were too many tiny bugs crawling around each time I bring food or snacks. Maybe they could use pest control to make sure they keep the bugs away. I only seen one little roach in fantastic room I killed it as soon as I seen it (room 610)

the valet opening the door and the warm greeting from all the staff made me feel right at home as soon as i stepped inside. Room Was very clean and spacious. Dinner on level 9 was also excellent. A taste of western food is nice break from rice everyday. It was a treat really. Breakfast was included in the booking and breakfast was great. My wife had the triple cheese toasty with the brew coffee and i had the french toast with bacon and scrambled eggs. This hotel is a good location for Immigration matters as its only 5 minutes away and also PSA for papers is 5 minutes away so perfect for our needs. Across the road you have a department store also very convenient. Will stay again. XYZ is my go to.

Best place in Tac! Clean modern and affordable. It’s the best deal in the city with free gourmet breakfast! Yes it’s included! They have a cool top floor pool that overlooks the city and right next to it is a restaurant/bar. The groundfloor has also a fusion restaurant that serves different menus and a coffee/pastry shop in the lobby! Will definitely stay again the the future!

Your Travel Guide to Tacloban City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tacloban City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Tacloban City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban serves numerous domestic flights daily. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate routes connecting Tacloban to Manila, Cebu, and other key hubs. Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially during off-peak periods.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Visayas provinces, bus services are available. Buses depart from major terminals in cities like Cebu and Manila, though the latter involves a ferry crossing. The journey by bus can be quite long, often taking 10 to 12 hours or more, depending on the starting point and route. Bus fares are generally more economical than flights, making it a viable option for budget-conscious travelers. You can find various bus companies offering routes to Tacloban.

Driving to Tacloban City is also an option, particularly for travelers within the Visayas region. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects Leyte to other islands. This route offers a scenic journey, allowing you to see more of the country. However, it requires significant driving time and planning, including potential ferry crossings if coming from islands not directly connected by bridges. Toll fees and fuel costs should be factored into the overall budget for this mode of transport.

Best Time to Visit Tacloban City

The ideal time to visit Tacloban City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with less rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the coastal areas. The period between December and February is particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal chances of typhoons.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring intermittent to heavy rainfall and is also the period when typhoons are more likely to occur in the Philippines. While you might find lower prices on accommodation and flights during this time, it's essential to be prepared for potential disruptions to travel plans due to inclement weather. For those who don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can offer a good balance.

Food and Dining Near Tacloban City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Tacloban City, being a coastal capital, offers a delightful array of seafood dishes that are a must-try for any Filipino traveler. Freshly grilled or steamed fish, prawns, and crabs are readily available in local markets and restaurants. Look for establishments that serve *kinilaw*, a local version of ceviche, where raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and flavorful appetizer that showcases the freshness of the seafood.

Another local specialty you should seek out is *Binagol*. This unique dessert is made from taro root, coconut milk, and sugar, steamed inside a banana leaf and served in a coconut shell. Its rich, sweet, and slightly earthy flavor is distinctive and offers a taste of traditional Waray cuisine. Many local eateries and pasalubong centers will have this available.

For those who enjoy hearty meals, *Adobong Puti* (White Adobo) is a variation of the classic Filipino dish, prepared without soy sauce, relying on vinegar, garlic, and salt for its savory flavor. It’s often made with chicken or pork and is a comforting dish that reflects the local palate. Trying this version of adobo provides an interesting culinary comparison to what you might be used to.

Don't leave Tacloban without trying *Moron*, a sweet rice cake similar to *budin*, but often flavored with chocolate and wrapped in banana leaves. It’s a popular merienda or dessert item. You can find these delicacies in local bakeries and markets, offering a sweet conclusion to your culinary exploration of Tacloban. Exploring these local flavors is a key part of the travel experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tacloban City

The people of Tacloban City, predominantly Waray, are known for their resilience and hospitality. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic Waray phrases like "Maopay nga adlaw" (Good day) can be appreciated. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting churches or religious sites, and always ask for permission before taking photos of people. Tacloban has a strong Catholic heritage, so be mindful of religious observances.

Safety in Tacloban City is generally comparable to other urban centers in the Philippines. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. It's also wise to have the contact numbers for your hotel and any local friends or contacts readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions and restaurants. Ride-hailing apps or local taxi booking services can be useful for transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. Having these tools at your fingertips can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

When planning your itinerary, remember that Tacloban City is a hub for exploring the historical significance of World War II in the Philippines, particularly related to General Douglas MacArthur's landing. The city also serves as a gateway to nearby natural attractions and islands. Balancing your time between historical sites, local culinary experiences, and perhaps a day trip will provide a well-rounded visit.

I arrived very early about 10am. The polite staff told me if I waited a short while I could check in soon which I did. This was excellent. The room looked small because the bed was huge but this was fine. The room itself was nice and clean, the a/c worked and the pillows were awesome. There was a stain on the bed linen, however; and the towels looked old and grey and could do with being replaced. Breakfast was nice although it was not a buffet breakfast as advertised on this website.

The room was outdated, sink was clogged, had to inform the staff TWICE just to fix the sink, shower drain poorly designed, it floods when you take a shower. AC was dripping/leaking. You can also hear the people pooping next room. Gym was 0 stars, no AC it was hot as hell, only one equipment and it was broken. One guy manning the cafe was too busy on his phone he was ignoring us, me and my nephews and nieces as we were buying desserts, his coworker had to tap him to notice us. The only good thing was the staff was courteous. The food was great too hence the one star.

The hotel is showing signs of age. Some mold in the shower sprayer The restaurant is very good with a lot of choices on the menu. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom doesn’t make much sense. The toilet is in one room with a sink with no soap or towel to use after you finish. There is a full length mirror on the inside of the door, I guess, so you can watch yourself go??? The staff and spa staff are all very friendly and helpful.

the valet opening the door and the warm greeting from all the staff made me feel right at home as soon as i stepped inside.

Even though it's rated as a 3 star hotel, they still have 5 star service and food. It's a really good place to stay and the staff are very well trained and take their job seriously. They have very good service and the food is really good.

I have stayed at XYZ before and would recommend staying again. The most impressive part is how comfortable the bed is...it's heaven. The TV worked unlike other hotels. The staff are friendly and the door staff are incredibly helpful. The hotel gave me an upgraded room, which wasn't as good as previous. Although the bathroom was larger and supposedly wheelchair accessible, it would benefit from a shower seat. Also the bidet had no water pressure. The restaurant is good with some decent choice. Despite the few minor glitches, for a comfortable experience at a fair price I would choose Hotel XYZ.

We stayed at XYZ hotel for about three weeks while vacationing there in tacloban city. All the staff were very friendly, respectful and polite. Our room was kept clean and comfortable. The only issues were that the WiFi keeps dropping off and had to re-log back in.
