We had a terrible time at the Galle Face Hotel.
We booked this very expensive and famous hotel in July and hoped it to be the perfect place to celebrate New Year and to be the climax of our holiday in Sri Lanka.
At 3.00am on 31st December we were woken by builders using jack hammers as they were apperently erecting a stage on the lawns of the hotel below our room.
We complained and we were told that the stage was for a private New Years Eve party for 2500 people - this was the first we heard about this private party.
The private party was on the lawns under our balcony. The music was very loud the lights very bright and the party music went on until 7.00am.
All the Hotel bars were closed to hotel guests for the whole night. All the bars were only for the private party. To get a drink we were told to go to our room and use room service.
The private party was the main event at the hotel.
We wrote to the hotel manager to complain about the serious disturbances on both nights of our stay. There has been no reply.
We had a wonderful holiday in Sri Lanka and the two nights at the Galle Face Hotel were to be the climax of a great holiday. It was terrible.
The Galle Face Hotel only told us about the private party when we complained about the hammering at 3.00am on the 31st December.
If they had told us when we booked in July we would of stayed at a different hotel.
Not to be told about a private party for 2500 people under your balcony was unforgiveable.

Bedroom was in poor condition, the air conditioning didn't work overnight, the windows were sealed, the mattress was not comfortable, being hard and feeling the metal springs. Hotel is a nostalgic look back in history and service levels are quite high.

We had to wait over an hour for our room to be ready, and then call three times and visit reception to get towels. The dinner buffet was not great. Otherwise, the room was very comfortable, with huge bed. The hotel really is a time travel experience and worthy of a one or two night stay

This hotel is supposed to be 4 star but was far from it. The property is in a poor state of repair, with paint peeling off the walls. The doors to the balcony were so delapidated that they wouldn't close properly. There was only one chair on the balcony and despite several requests we never got a second chair. There was constant noise, either from the high volume music or from the continual banging and hammering as they built or removed decking for weddings and parties. It was all very dissapointing and not what was expected from a hotel that charges so much.

Thought we would have a nice stay, but ended up in a room that was connected by a suite door to another room that had a baby in it that screamed and coughed all night from 0100-0930am. Staff did not comp our room. Should never put someone in a room that has a door connected to a loud family.

Maybe next time. Tell me the truth. If all garden view rooms are booked out and I booked a garden view room, tell me that it’s booked out instead of sending me to a room that I didn’t book.
