Hotel location is very near to Jiantan station. The room is quite big and clean. The Wi-Fi has good connection and fast. The minibar provides bottled water, coffee, tea, snacks, and soft drinks. There is an electric kettle, coffee maker, fridge, and microwave. The bathroom is clean, only provides soap, shower gel, and shampoo. We can choose one of 4 main menu for breakfast besides the food at the main bar. The receptionist and restaurant staff are very helpful. I’ll stay at Tango jiantan hotel on my next trip to Taipei.

A Culinary Journey Through Shilin

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Shilin

Shilin is a culinary destination, renowned for its vibrant food scene that offers an authentic taste of Taiwan. The undisputed star is the Shilin Night Market, a sprawling labyrinth of food stalls offering an incredible array of local delicacies. Here, you can sample everything from crispy fried chicken cutlets and oyster omelets to stinky tofu and bubble tea. Beyond the market, Shilin boasts numerous local eateries and small restaurants serving classic Taiwanese dishes like braised pork rice (lu rou fan), beef noodle soup, and various seafood preparations.

For travellers seeking Halal options, finding dedicated Halal-certified restaurants within Shilin might require some research, as Taiwan's food culture is predominantly pork-based. However, many eateries offer vegetarian dishes, and some may be able to prepare meals without pork or lard upon request. It's advisable to look for signs indicating Halal certification or to use apps that help identify Muslim-friendly eateries. Exploring areas around the Jiantan MRT station or the Tianmu district might yield more diverse dining choices, including some international cuisines that can accommodate specific dietary needs.

The cost of dining in Shilin offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food at the night market can range from ₱ 50 to ₱ 200 per dish, making it incredibly affordable for a filling meal. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 400 to ₱ 800 per person for a complete meal, which is significantly less than what one might expect in major Western cities. Even upscale dining experiences are generally more budget-friendly than in North America or Europe, allowing visitors to indulge in diverse culinary experiences without breaking the bank.

When dining in Shilin, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not customary in Taiwan, so don't feel obligated to leave extra. It's common to queue patiently for popular food stalls, and pointing at dishes is an acceptable way to order if language is a barrier. Many establishments are casual, so dress comfortably. Be adventurous and try new things; the local food culture is a significant part of the Shilin experience, offering a delicious insight into Taiwanese life.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Shilin

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Shilin

Understanding local etiquette is key to a smooth and respectful visit to Shilin. Taiwanese culture values politeness, respect for elders, and a generally reserved demeanor in public spaces. While generally very welcoming to tourists, maintaining a polite and considerate attitude will be greatly appreciated. For instance, it's customary to queue patiently for public transport and at popular food stalls, and loud conversations in quiet areas like libraries or on public transport are generally frowned upon.

When visiting iconic sites like the Shilin Night Market or The Grand Hotel, certain behaviours are expected. At the night market, while it's a lively place, be mindful of personal space and avoid blocking pathways. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask before taking close-up photos of vendors or their food. At The Grand Hotel, given its historical significance and grandeur, dressing respectfully is advisable, especially if you plan to dine in its more formal restaurants. Avoid overly revealing clothing in such settings.

Safety in Shilin is generally very high, with low crime rates. However, like any busy tourist area, pickpocketing can occur in crowded places like the night market. It's wise to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings. For transportation, the Taipei Metro (MRT) is efficient, safe, and easy to navigate. Ride-hailing apps like Uber are available, though local taxi services are also reliable and metered. Having offline maps and translation apps on your smartphone can be incredibly useful for navigation and communication.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Taiwan is 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance services. For Filipino travellers, it's important to know the contact details for the Philippine Economic and Cultural Office (PECO) in Taipei, which serves as the de facto embassy. They can provide assistance in emergencies. While Taiwan is generally safe, having comprehensive travel insurance is always recommended to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or travel disruptions.

Getting to Shilin and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Shilin is a straightforward journey, typically involving a flight to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), which serves the greater Taipei metropolitan area. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB) are available with various airlines, usually taking around 3 to 4 hours. Connecting flights from other Philippine hubs like Clark (CRK) or Davao (DVO) are also options. The estimated cost for a round-trip flight can range from ₱ 10,000 to ₱ 25,000, depending on the season and booking time. From TPE, you can take the Airport MRT directly to Taipei Main Station, and then transfer to the MRT Red Line towards Tamsui-Xinyi, alighting at Jiantan or Shilin station for access to the district. You can book flight tickets conveniently on Traveloka.

Navigating Shilin and the wider Taipei area is remarkably easy thanks to an efficient and extensive public transportation system. The Taipei Metro (MRT) is the most convenient way to get around, with stations like Jiantan and Shilin providing excellent access to the district's main attractions. A single MRT ride typically costs between ₱ 20 to ₱ 60, making it very affordable. Buses are also a comprehensive option, covering areas not reached by the MRT. For travellers who prefer door-to-door service, taxis are readily available, and ride-hailing apps are also an option.

The best time to visit Shilin largely depends on your preference for weather and crowds. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant conditions, with mild temperatures and lower humidity, making them ideal for exploring the night markets and outdoor attractions. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with a higher chance of typhoons, while winter (December to February) is cooler and can be damp. These shoulder seasons often coincide with school holidays in the US and Europe, so expect moderate crowds and prices.

Before departing for Shilin, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD), and while some larger establishments might accept USD, it's best to have NTD for markets and smaller shops. You can exchange currency at the airport or use ATMs. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and the Taipei Metro app for transit information.

Visa Information for Taiwan

Entering Taiwan to Visit Shilin

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Taiwan, including the district of Shilin, visa requirements are generally straightforward. As of recent regulations, Philippine citizens can enter Taiwan visa-free for a stay of up to 14 days, provided they meet certain conditions. These conditions typically include having a passport with at least six months of validity remaining from the date of entry, a confirmed onward or return ticket, and no criminal record in Taiwan. It is crucial to verify the latest visa-free policy with official Taiwanese immigration sources before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

The application process for visa-free entry is essentially an immigration clearance upon arrival at the airport. You will need to present your valid Philippine passport, your return or onward ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds for your stay, such as recent bank statements or credit card statements. While there are no visa fees for this visa-free entry, ensure your passport meets the validity requirements. The maximum stay is strictly enforced, so plan your itinerary accordingly to avoid overstaying.

While the visa-free option is convenient, policies can be updated. It is always recommended for travellers to confirm the most current entry requirements directly with the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines or their official immigration website before booking flights and accommodation. This proactive step ensures a smooth entry into Taiwan and allows you to fully enjoy your visit to Shilin without any last-minute complications.
