A nice, spacious, clean hotel with a Japanese-style bidet, a small bathtub, and a smooth shower with a strong water flow. The hotel lobby has a delicious and inexpensive Lu Rou restaurant. Across the street from the hotel, they also offer a delicious and affordable breakfast. Overall, I would return to this hotel if I were in Taipei.

The rooms are very small. It is our second stay. Booked two standard rooms this time. Previously booked a family room and it is slightly bigger. Do take note that you will need to throw the tissue in the bin instead of the toilet. Powerful shower and the highlight of the hotel is the basement common area where they serve free-flow sandwiches in the morning and some light snacks, i.e., buns, hotdogs, and popcorns in the evening. Free instant noodles, snacks, and some soft drinks as well. The basement is featured with some games and a photo booth. There is one washing machine to be used but needs to be booked in timing with reception.

I did not take any food from the hotel as there are plenty of options near the hotel, especially M3. The staff are super friendly and courteous. I appreciate the many options for the welcome drink. The hotel is also just next to the Taipei Main Station, so connectivity is excellent.

I like the fact that the hotel is at the center that is near to many places. The surrounding area is incredible, next to the Ximen MRT, halal restaurant I.E. Beef noodle, Ximending night market, 7/11, massage places, etc. And the most important thing is my room was pretty clean and spacious enough.

The service is excellent. The staff is cheerful, speaks fluent English, and gives easy-to-understand instructions. The room is very clean and comfortable, everything can be adjusted with the iPad available in the room or via the citizenM app. The view from above to see the city and the cars running below is great. What I like most is the bathroom, the water is strong and there is a tropical rain shower that pours water from above, extremely comfortable. I don't want to go out after taking a shower :) Especially, it's close and convenient to go anywhere because it's only a few hundred meters from the MRT station. You can take the MRT, walk, or call Uber if you go further. If you use Uber, remember to check the bill carefully after arriving, if there's anything, report it to the Uber operator immediately. Many drivers see that you are a tourist, so sometimes they think that if you add more money, you won't notice. In general, this citizenM North Gate hotel is great. You should experience it! :)

Zhongzheng: A Gateway to Taiwan's Cultural Heart

For international travellers seeking a dynamic blend of historical significance, vibrant urban life, and accessible culture, Zhongzheng District in Taipei stands out as a compelling destination. While Taiwan offers a diverse array of experiences across its island, Zhongzheng provides a concentrated dose of the nation's essence, making it an ideal starting point for those exploring this fascinating East Asian hub. It’s a district where the pulse of modern Taiwan beats strongly, yet it remains deeply connected to its rich past, offering a multifaceted experience that appeals to a wide range of global visitors.

The district itself is a microcosm of Taipei's broader appeal, showcasing a fascinating duality. One moment you might find yourself amidst the grandeur of monumental historical sites, and the next, you're navigating bustling commercial centres or exploring vibrant local markets. This internal variation means that choosing your base within Zhongzheng can significantly shape your travel experience. Whether you prefer the convenience of being near major transport hubs or the charm of a more localized neighbourhood, Zhongzheng offers distinct pockets that cater to different preferences and travel styles.

From a value perspective, Zhongzheng presents an attractive proposition for international travellers. With an average starting price of around ₱ 723.72 per night for accommodations, it offers a more budget-friendly entry point compared to some other major Asian capitals. The district's reputation for being rich in historical sites, arts and culture, and shopping opportunities further enhances its appeal. For travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa, Zhongzheng provides a rich cultural immersion without the prohibitive costs often associated with major global cities, offering excellent value for money.

The accommodation landscape in Zhongzheng reflects this diverse appeal, ranging from well-appointed hotels like the 4-star Hotel Midtown Richardson, known for its amenities and service, to more budget-friendly options such as the 2.5-star Mayer Inn, which still garners high ratings for its value and accessibility. These establishments serve as excellent entry points for understanding the local hospitality scene. Through Traveloka, travellers can easily book hotel rooms that suit their budget and desired comfort level, ensuring a smooth start to their Taiwanese adventure.

Ultimately, Zhongzheng is a district that welcomes everyone. American travellers will appreciate its modern infrastructure and efficient public transport. European visitors, often drawn to history and art, will find themselves captivated by the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and the district's cultural institutions. Indian travellers can find familiar culinary influences and a vibrant street food scene, all while benefiting from the competitive pricing. For travellers from Africa, Zhongzheng offers a gateway to East Asian culture with a blend of tradition and modernity that is both accessible and engaging.

Best Areas to Stay in Zhongzheng

Zhongzheng District is not a monolithic entity; it's a dynamic area composed of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour and set of advantages for international visitors. Understanding these differences is key to selecting the perfect base for your Taipei adventure. Whether you prioritize proximity to major attractions, access to public transportation, or a more local atmosphere, Zhongzheng has a corner that will suit your travel style and needs, ensuring your stay is both comfortable and convenient.

Taipei Main Station Area

This area is the undisputed transportation nexus of Taipei, making it an incredibly practical choice for international travellers. The sheer volume of activity here, with trains, MRT lines, and buses converging, means you can easily reach almost any destination within Taiwan and beyond. For travellers who value efficiency and seamless connectivity, staying near Taipei Main Station is paramount. It’s a hub that buzzes with energy day and night, offering a constant stream of people and activity, which can be both exciting and a little overwhelming for some.

From this convenient location, accessing key landmarks like the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is straightforward via a short MRT ride. The area itself is packed with department stores, underground shopping malls, and a vast array of eateries catering to every palate and budget, from quick bites to more formal dining. For those looking to explore further afield, the station provides direct access to high-speed rail lines, making day trips to other cities a breeze. You can easily book attractions and tours departing from this central point.

Ximending

Often described as Taipei's "Harajuku" or "Shibuya," Ximending is a vibrant, youthful district renowned for its pedestrian-friendly streets, trendy boutiques, street art, and lively entertainment scene. It's a place where fashion, pop culture, and youth expression converge, making it a magnet for younger travellers and those who enjoy a dynamic, bustling atmosphere. The area truly comes alive in the evenings, with neon lights illuminating the streets and a constant flow of people enjoying street performances, shopping, and dining.

This neighbourhood is a fantastic base for travellers who want to be in the heart of Taipei's youth culture and entertainment. It offers a plethora of dining options, from traditional Taiwanese snacks to international cuisine, and is a prime spot for souvenir shopping. While it has a distinctively modern and energetic vibe, Ximending also has historical roots, with the Red House Theatre serving as a cultural landmark. Getting to Ximending is easy via the MRT, and it’s well-connected to other parts of the city, making exploration convenient.

Near Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

For travellers drawn to history, culture, and grand architecture, the area surrounding the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall offers a more serene and culturally rich environment. This iconic landmark is not just a historical monument but also a sprawling park and cultural complex, providing a sense of grandeur and tranquility amidst the urban landscape. Staying in this vicinity allows for easy access to the memorial itself, as well as other significant cultural sites and museums within the Zhongzheng District.

This neighbourhood appeals to visitors seeking a deeper understanding of Taiwan's history and political heritage. Beyond the memorial, the area boasts beautiful green spaces, government buildings, and a more relaxed pace compared to the bustling commercial hubs. It’s a great place for leisurely strolls and appreciating the city's more stately side. While perhaps less focused on nightlife, it offers excellent access to public transport, allowing for easy exploration of other districts, and is a good base for those interested in arts and heritage.

Zhongzheng Commercial District (General Area)

This encompasses the broader commercial and business heart of the Zhongzheng District, often overlapping with the Taipei Main Station area but extending into surrounding business-oriented zones. It's characterized by modern office buildings, large retail complexes, and a constant flow of business and leisure travellers. For those on a business trip or who simply prefer the convenience of being in a central, well-serviced urban environment with plenty of amenities, this area is an excellent choice.

Staying in the commercial district means you're never far from essential services, diverse dining options, and shopping centres. It offers a high level of convenience and accessibility, with many hotels catering to international visitors. While it might lack the distinct character of Ximending or the historical gravitas of the CKS Memorial Hall area, its strength lies in its practicality and connectivity. It’s a solid base for travellers who want to be in the thick of things and have easy access to both business and leisure activities.

Around Taipei City Hall (Adjacent to Zhongzheng)

While technically bordering Zhongzheng, the area around Taipei City Hall, particularly the Xinyi District, is often considered by visitors for its modern, upscale vibe and its concentration of high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment. It's home to Taipei 101 and a sophisticated urban landscape. For travellers seeking a more contemporary and luxurious experience, this area, easily accessible from Zhongzheng, offers a different perspective on Taipei.

This district is ideal for shoppers and foodies who appreciate designer brands, fine dining, and a polished urban environment. It's a hub for international events and exhibitions, making it a convenient base for those attending conferences or seeking world-class entertainment. While it represents a more premium segment of Taipei's offerings, its excellent MRT connectivity means you can easily venture into Zhongzheng's historical and cultural sites from here, offering a balanced experience of Taipei's diverse facets.
