The Gili Islands are located just off the northwest tip of Lombok. They came to the attention of the wider world as a backpacker mecca in the 1980s and 1990s. Of the three, Gili Trawangan is the largest and the most popular.
The Gilis are a laid-back haven, with countless beachside cafes playing reggae and serving guests with energy drinks. But at the other end of the scale, elaborate seafood buffets, fresh salads, and good quality Asian and western food are not hard to find. Best of all: you can count on the no-motor-vehicle rule to protect the islands' peace.
