North Sumatra is the ancestral home of the Batak tribe. The word Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups in this region. The terms used include Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Angkola, and Mandailing; groups associated with different languages and customs (adat). The Toba Batak are traditionally known for their weaving, wood carving, and especially the ornate stone tombs. The area around Lake Toba is home to many interesting villages; setting for ancient dance and theater performances on a modern stage.

Tour Itinerary

09:30-14:30 Upon arrival at Silangit Airport, meet our licensed and professional tour guide, then proceed directly to visit Huta Ginjang; a hill in the northeast corner of Lake Toba that provides some beautiful views of the caldera lake, including Samosir Island in the center. Next, a trip to the TB Silalahi Museum on the shores of Lake Toba which is dedicated to the preservation of the cultural values of the indigenous people of North Sumatra: Batak and Huta Batak. This is an outdoor museum built like a traditional Batak village, consisting of three houses and three sopo (storage buildings) depicting typical Batak houses. Continuing the day to reach Balige; the capital of Toba Samosir Regency on the east coast of Lake Toba, where there is a large market built in the traditional Tapanuli style. The final destination of the day is Parapat village, from which we depart for Samosir Island. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.
