6 healthy cafés in Singapore that prove clean eating is anything but boring

If you think clean eating means going cold turkey on burgers, fries and that pisang goreng or deep-fried banana fritters for teatime, you’re only half right. More xennials, millennials and Gen Zs around the globe are ditching their fizzy drinks and chips for more wholesome foods, and actually taking the time to sit down and enjoy their meals. But, what does this trending buzzword “clean eating” mean for restaurants and foodmakers?

We went around Singapore for its clean-eating dining scene and found none of the menus serving tofu burgers, poached chicken breasts, carrots and celery sticks and… you know, food so bland in taste, even hospital meals taste better!

Instead, we’ve compiled a list of restaurants and cafés that serve real and healthy food so yummy-licious, even Mom will approve of.

This Japanese fusion restaurant taught us how to say “Fish or Chicken” in an unusually elegant way, and using three languages! Choose between the hearty sous vide (method of cooking in French) Norwegian salmon lightly-seared aburi (method of cooking in Japanese) and sprinkled with konbu (kelp in Japanese), or the indulgent sous vide chicken breast seasoned with a touch of pepper. Our personal favorite is, however, the donburi option, topped with an onsen egg and a choice of either furikake white rice or go one notch healthier, the brown rice.

Why We Like It: Premium Japanese fusion gourmet at unbelievably affordable prices. Need we say more?

Aloha Poké

Aloha Poké bowls are so delicious to look at, it took us a few good minutes just for oohing and ahhing at this visual delight. Each Aloha Poké (pronounced poh-kay) is served with rice and salad, your choice of poké — raw salmon, tuna, chicken among many others — and topped off with flying fish roe, quail eggs, or edamame.

Why We Like It: Its consideration for people who are not fans of raw food. If you prefer your poké cooked (like us), just head over to the counter and ask for the cooked options of the day.

What makes the café-cum-bistro interesting is its inclusive concept. The menu comes with vegetarian, dairy-free diet, and nut-free diet options. Need something to go with the coffee break? Get a gluten-free, organic grain with cashew butter, or with a slab of Aussie grass-fed beef, and eggs done the way you like — fried, scrambled or poached. It’s ridiculously fun saying it to the waiter, too!

Why We Like It: Kitchen by Food Rebel takes pride in their own sauces and salad dressings made from scratch. No MSG. No artificial flavors. Just all the authentic, good stuff.

28 Stanley St, Singapore 068737

Opening Hours | 8.00am–6.00pm (weekdays) and 9.00am–3.00pm (on Saturdays only)

The Stamford Brasserie

Whether you want a quick coffee fix in the morning, a light, midday lunch, casual dinner with friends or even after-work drinks with colleagues, The Stamford Brasserie is your place. We’d highly recommend the Pan-Roasted Salmon Tataki, which comes with Japanese soy-based dressing, greens and radish. It doesn’t get any healthier than this!

Why We Like It: It also cares for the environment. As part of the Swissôtel’s group of F&B establishment, The Stamford is entirely plastic straw-free! The turtles are gonna be happy to hear this.

2 Stamford Rd Swissotel The Stamford Level 1, Singapore 178882

Opening Hours | 6.30am – 12.00am (Sunday – Wednesday) and 6.30am – 1:30am (Thursday – Saturday)

HRVST

Pronounced as “harvest”, a review on Facebook said HRVST “will please even hard-core carnivores”. Naturally, we felt we had to put this place to the test. We were pleasantly surprised by how meat-free meals could be so delicious. Our recommendation is the Modern Grandma’s Fried Rice (and by that, they mean adding barley and broccoli into their fried rice, which no ordinary grandma does!). By the end of our dinner, we are seriously contemplating becoming full-time vegans.

Why We Like It: Its 100% vegan menu. The cafe and bar serves only the freshest produce sourced locally!

Opening Hours | 11.30am – 2.15pm, 5.30pm – 9.45pm (weekdays only)

Park Bench Deli

Park Bench Deli makes sure our belly’s happy with its melt-in-your-mouth sandwiches. In place of a good ol’ sandwich, we learnt that the secret to their best-selling Fried Chicken Sandwich is to do it gourmet style — marinated boneless chicken thigh, cooked sous vide for several hours and then, marinated overnight again in buttermilk before they are deep-fried. Definitely not your average sandwich place!

Why We Like It: Did we say that some of the meat products in the menu are actually plant-based and sourced from California-based clean food startup Impossible Foods? Try ‘em and find out if you’ll change your eating stance too!

Park Bench Deli

179 Telok Ayer St, Singapore 068627

Opening Hours | 7:30am – 4.00pm, 5.00pm – 9.00pm (weekdays) and 9.00am – 3.00pm (weekends)
