Planning to visit Thailand soon? We’ve got you covered. Why not visit Thailand in April, when you can experience the Songkran Festival?!
The Songkran Festival 2025 will take place from 13th to 15th April. The festival begins on 13th April, known as Songkran or New Year’s Eve. 14th April is called Wan Klang or Wan Nao, and 15th April is known as Wan Taleung. When you're in Thailand during the Songkran Festival, you’ll feel a different atmosphere in the country. Not only can you enjoy all the tourist attractions, but you’ll also get to experience the excitement and celebrations of the Thai people leading up to Songkran.
If this is the first time you’re hearing about Songkran, then it’s time to learn about it with us. Songkran originates from the Sanskrit word "Sankranti," which means transformation or change. Therefore, the Songkran Festival is a celebration in Thailand that marks the Thai New Year, symbolising renewal and change. The timing of Songkran is determined by the Thai Lunar Calendar. Celebrations in different regions often vary—some places start earlier, while others celebrate for longer. That’s why the exact dates can be flexible.
A key tradition of Songkran is the Water Festival, where people splash water on each other. This is why it is also known as the "Water Splashing Festival." Water symbolises purification, as it is believed to cleanse and refresh. This act of cleansing represents renewal or transformation, with the hope of washing away misfortunes and bad luck. Songkran is not only celebrated in Thailand but also in neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Laos. For Thai people, Songkran is the most important celebration and public holiday of the year. This festival also attracts many visitors who come to Thailand to experience the festivities.
First of all, the Songkran Festival will be an incredibly fun experience for you and everyone in Thailand. It is celebrated nationwide, with each region having its own unique traditions. For example, if you are staying in Bangkok, you can join the celebrations on Khao San Road. The streets will be packed with people joyfully splashing water on each other.
Another exciting part? You can join in even if you’re a visitor! If you want to participate, be prepared to get drenched and don’t forget to bring your own water supplies!
Aside from water splashing, you’ll also see people bathing Buddha statues, as Songkran celebrates the Buddhist New Year. Monks will be present in large numbers, and people usually show their respect by sprinkling water on their hands. Temples will be lively, with people performing acts of merit and offering prayers.
There will also be parades, traditional dances, and more. For Songkran Festival 2025, a cheerful and relaxed dress code is encouraged. Here are some key things to keep in mind:
For Thai people, Songkran is also a time for family reunions. After the busyness of daily life, it’s a chance to return home and connect with loved ones. Because of this, public transport may be crowded, and many shops will be closed (except for major shopping malls).
