Plenty of visitors also choose Strasbourg as their spot to spend Christmas and New Year’s. And even though it’s quite a distance from Singapore, many say the trip is absolutely worth it. So before you pack your bags, get to know the city and its special Christmas markets a little better—your holiday will be all the more unforgettable.

Strasbourg is one of those cities that feels like it belongs to two worlds at once. Tucked away in the Alsace region of France, right on the border with Germany, it’s a place where French elegance and German charm blend beautifully.

You can actually get there pretty easily from both sides. It’s about a two-hour train ride from Paris, but also just a stone’s throw away from German cities like Stuttgart or Frankfurt.

On an ordinary day, Strasbourg has a calm, easy vibe. Locals cycle through the cobbled streets, sip coffee in cosy cafés, and wander along the canals of Petite France, the city’s most postcard-perfect district.

But come December, Strasbourg transforms completely. The city lights up — literally — with twinkling decorations strung across medieval half-timbered houses. This is when Strasbourg earns its nickname: “The Capital of Christmas.”

The title isn’t just for show; it goes back to 1570, when the very first Christkindelsmärik Strasbourg (Strasbourg Christmas Market) was held here, making it one of the oldest in Europe. Ever since, the tradition has grown into something magical that draws millions of visitors every year. That’s why visiting this market is one of the top things to do in Strasbourg in December.

Also known as The Strasbourg Noel Market, this place is special not only because of its history, but also because of how it’s spread across the city. The heart of it all is around Place de la Cathédrale, with the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral towering above glowing wooden stalls.

Why should you visit the Strasbourg Christmas Market?

If you’re from Singapore, celebrating Christmas at Strasbourg is going to feel like stepping into a whole new world. Back home, Christmas is all about sparkling lights along Orchard Road and festive mall displays — but in Strasbourg, you’re surrounded by centuries-old traditions, cosy winter vibes, and the kind of festive atmosphere you’ve probably only seen in movies.

At this Christmas market, you’ll wander through charming wooden stalls set against the backdrop of a towering Gothic cathedral. The air smells of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and freshly baked bredeles (Alsatian Christmas cookies). Instead of air-conditioned shopping centres, you’ll be exploring lively open-air squares strung with fairy lights, wrapped up in a warm coat with a cup of hot chocolate in hand.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

The Giant Christmas Tree at Place Kléber – a jaw-dropping centrepiece that’s nothing like what you’ve seen in Singapore.
Handmade gifts & ornaments – perfect keepsakes that go beyond your usual Christmas shopping.
Alsatian food & drinks – try tarte flambée, sausages, mulled wine, and sweet pastries you’ll crave long after your trip.
Festive atmosphere everywhere – choirs singing, fairy lights reflecting off half-timbered houses, and streets buzzing with Christmas cheer.

Strasbourg Christmas Market location

Don’t think that this Christmas Market Strasbourg France is confined to just one square. It stretches across the city centre, with each corner offering its own character and theme. Wander through it all and you’ll feel as though the whole town has turned into a festive village.

Here are the main locations you’ll want to check out:

Place de la Cathédrale – The heart of it all, right in front of the stunning Strasbourg Cathedral. This is where you’ll find the most magical stalls and the classic market atmosphere.
Place Kléber – Famous for the giant Christmas tree, which is basically the symbol of Strasbourg at Christmas. Around the square, you’ll also find stalls and charity markets.
Place Broglie – Home to the Christkindelsmärik, the oldest part of Strasbourg’s Christmas market, dating back to 1570.
Petite France & other squares – Different corners of the city have their own themed markets, like food, crafts, or regional specialities.

Which one is the "best Christmas market in Strasbourg"? That really depends on what you’re looking for. But if there’s one thing to know, it’s that Strasbourg’s Christmas Market isn’t about a single spot.

Rather than being held in just one hall, it’s a city-wide celebration — wherever you wander in the historic centre, you’ll find charming stalls, glowing lights, and festive vibes. If you’d like to experience it all but only have limited time, this itinerary will help you make the most of your visit.

In 2024, the Strasbourg Christmas Market ran from 27 November to 27 December, with most stalls open daily from 11.30am to 9pm. This schedule came from Visit Strasbourg and the city’s official Noël à Strasbourg website. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the hours were shorter, and after 25 December the markets were still open but on a smaller scale.

For 2025, according to the official website, the market will start on 26 November at 2pm and close on 24 December at 9pm.

If you’re looking for details on Christmas Market Strasbourg opening hours, here’s what to expect this year:

Most days: 11.30am – 9pm
Opening day (26 November): from 2pm onwards
Christmas Eve (24 December): closes earlier, around 6pm
Christmas Day (25 December): only a handful of stalls open, much quieter than usual

So, while Strasbourg keeps the festive spirit alive all month, the best time to visit is really between late November and Christmas Eve, when the city is at its most magical.

How to get to the Strasbourg Christmas Market from the airport?

If you’re flying straight into Strasbourg Airport (Aéroport International de Strasbourg – SXB) from Singapore, the good news is that getting into the city centre is quick and simple. The airport is only about 10 kilometres from Strasbourg.

After arriving at the airport, you can continue your journey using several modes of transport, such as:

Train: There’s a direct shuttle train from the airport station to Gare de Strasbourg (Strasbourg’s main train station). The ride takes around 10 minutes, and from there it’s an easy 10–15 minute walk into the historic centre where the Christmas Market/Advent Village Strasbourg is held.
By Taxi or Ride-share: A taxi from the airport to the city centre takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
By Bus: There are also regional buses, though the train is usually faster and easier if you’ve just landed with luggage.

If you’re arriving from other airports nearby (like Basel–Mulhouse, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, or even Frankfurt), you can hop on a regional or high-speed train that drops you right at Strasbourg’s main station.

Where to Park for the Strasbourg Christmas Market

Driving into Strasbourg during the Christmas season can be a bit tricky, as the historic centre turns into a pedestrian-only zone in December. Parking is limited right in the centre, but you’ve got a few good options:

Park & Ride (P+R) Car Parks: The easiest solution. Strasbourg has several P+R sites around the city connected to the tram network. You park your car for just a few Euros, and the tram whisks you into the city centre in about 10–15 minutes.
City Car Parks: If you really want to be closer, there are underground car parks like Parking Gutenberg or Parking Austerlitz. But be warned, these fill up quickly during December and can be pricey.
Outside the Centre: Some visitors prefer to park a little further out and enjoy a winter walk into town. It’s quieter and saves the stress of city traffic.

Is there an entrance fee to the Strasbourg Christmas Market?

The Strasbourg Christmas Market is completely free to enter. You can wander through the stalls, enjoy the decorations, and soak up the festive atmosphere without paying a cent. Of course, you’ll want to budget for food, drinks, and souvenirs once you’re there.
