How to Care for Yourself During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 outbreak changes everything, and it wasn't exactly a joyride for everyone. The impact on our physical and mental health was disastrous. Apart from financial instability, our levels of anxiety and depression never felt so real. The couch slowly becomes our best friend and "couch potato" has become part of our identity.

Our country is under lockdown (again) and we are back to facing these four concrete walls in our houses. You would have to be Gandhi to not feel the negative impact this has on both our physical and mental health.

It is hard to identify those who suffer from physical and mental distress. With all honesty, my anxiety has become my overlords ever since the lockdown. However, these changes can be seen vividly in our behaviors - whether we realized it or not.

Irregular eating and sleeping habits, difficulties to focus, excessive crying, uncontrollable outbursts, and withdrawal - these are all the red flags we shouldn't ignore. How can we stop ourselves from diving headfirst into this black hole?

How to Maintain Our Physical Health during the Pandemic?

Physical health will affect how we manage our daily activities. It is important as it will help us stay productive or at least, sane. Here are some examples we can make a habit out of to ensure our physical health is in great shape.

Be Physically Active

It's no rocket science, exercise is good for our body. It helps to reduce stress and improve our mood. Exercise improves blood circulation and transfers oxygen to our brain effectively. Studies showed that sufficient oxygen to the brain will increase memory capacity, boost concentration and stimulate brain activity. You don't need to do outdoor activities or spend time in the gym to be physically active. Be creative!

Eat Less Crappy Food

Choosing the food we put in our bodies can make a big difference. If you put trash in your body, you will feel like trash. You will lose energy or worst-case scenario; get sick.

Eating healthy food is important as it helps boost our immune system. It doesn't mean that you have to stop consuming meat and all. There are many equally balanced recipes that you can try - and it's not chugging spinach like Popeye. Besides, having good food not only makes you healthier but it will also improve your mood.

Get Enough Sleep

Gary Vaynerchuk always said his favorite thing in the world is sleeping. Why? It helps his body to get proper rest so he can spend his waking hours becoming the biggest entrepreneur out there (and he did).

Our body needs a sufficient amount of sleep. Lack of sleep will disrupt your focus and mood. Hence, you will get angry or annoyed easily. Essentially, lack of sleep will turn you into a zombie, and zombies always get shot in the head.

Normalize Healthy Habits

Making a healthy choice of living helps us live longer and healthier (here is me sending a big Amen to that now more than ever). You can nurture healthy habits by eating healthy, sleep early, and exercise regularly. Maybe it's a good time to take the alcohol/caffeine consumption down a notch. Take one small step at a time and slowly, you'll feel much better.

Get Productive

During quarantine, we spend most of our time indoors. Just because we are inside, doesn't mean we have to remain unproductive. The dishes are still there, the laundry still needs to be done, and you still need to be productive. Enroll in new online classes, take up a new hobby, play Sudoku - get the brain working out. Kidnap your neighbor's cat and play with it for an hour or two.

How to Maintain Our Mental Health during the Pandemic?

Mental health is tricky because our minds are tricksters. It'll tell us we're okay when we're not. Sometimes we don't even know we're not okay until we're wrecked. Our mental state will affect how we think, act, feel and react to our surroundings. If we let it run rampant, it will consume our lives, and getting back to our old selves is going to be a battle. We already have COVID-19 to fight against, let's not add our mind as the second opponent.

Travel

Well, this is awkward. The news on Singapore Travel Bubble was the first hope of us seeing the world again, and then, Circuit Breaker Phase 2 happens. Talk about a cosmic joke. But, one can continue to dream!

Human needs to travel, it makes us happy. That is why going to the grocery shop is like traveling to Bali nowadays. Even though we're stuck inside (again), there's always time to prepare our travel piggy bank for when the borders open again (for the love of God, please do). Until then, let's try 'traveling' around the City of Master Bedroom to the City of Kitchen.

Take a Break

Listen to your body. If you feel tired or sleepy, it is either your body telling you to lay off the Twiggies or you are at your limit. Stop what you're doing and relax for a while. Our brain and body are not in sync most of the time, our body thinks we're on a roll, but our brain is begging for a recess. We need to compromise and listen well - to ourselves.

Spend some "Me Time" with yourself; read a book, snuggle with your pets (or your neighbors'), call your parents, or watch Netflix! The possibilities are endless! But maybe don't watch Game of Thrones - it'll give you even bad anxiety.

Stay Connected

Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, human connection is as real as the Earth is round (sorry, flat Earthers!). Pandemic really hit us hard when it comes to maintaining our social needs. But, bless the Lord we have technologies!

Although it is different, we should still remain connected with the people we love. You can FaceTime with your cats and I still won't judge you. Use the technologies we have to keep our human interaction alive.

And there you have it, some of the things you and I can do together. Traveloka is not exempted from our own physical and mental chaos. We value our customers and their well-being.

We hope this content and our regular updates on the travel status can help provide some value to your life. We may not be out of the storm yet, but we will be and once the borders open up, you can bet Traveloka will be here to make your travel dreams come true. Stay safe!
