This page is about Los Ángeles in Chile, a provincial city in the Biobío region in the south-central part of the country, served by María Dolores Airport (LSQ). It shares its name with the far larger city in California, so check the code before you book flights to Los Angeles. If you meant California, head to our Los Angeles, California flights page. Chile's Los Ángeles is a farming and forestry hub and a gateway to waterfalls, volcanoes and national parks in the foothills of the Andes.
María Dolores Airport sits on the edge of Los Ángeles, a short drive from the city centre. The city lies in Chile's central valley between the coastal range and the Andes, roughly midway along the country's long north to south axis, and it is the capital of Biobío province. Concepción, the region's largest city, is to the west, while the mountains and lakes of the Laja area rise to the east.
LSQ is a small aerodrome with one modest terminal building, and it handles mostly private, charter and air ambulance traffic. Scheduled airline service to Los Ángeles has come and gone over the years and is not a regular fixture, so search your dates to see whether anything is on sale before you plan around it.
Taxis and pre-booked transfers are the simplest way to cover the short distance between María Dolores Airport and central Los Ángeles. Car hire is worth considering if you plan to explore the lakes, waterfalls and national parks nearby, since public transport into the mountains is limited. Long-distance buses from the city's terminal connect with Concepción, Temuco and Santiago.
There are no nonstop flights from Singapore to Los Ángeles in Chile. The long-haul journey ends in Santiago, the country's international gateway, and it normally involves at least one stop on the way, for example in Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand or North America.
From Santiago, the most reliable way on is a domestic flight to Concepción, whose airport has regular links with the capital, followed by a bus or hire car inland to Los Ángeles. Long-distance buses also run straight from Santiago for travellers who prefer to stay on the ground. If a flight to LSQ itself does appear in the results, compare it with the Concepción option on total journey, and leave a comfortable buffer between your international arrival and any onward connection.
Los Ángeles lies in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are the reverse of what Singaporeans might expect from Europe or North America. Summer runs from December to February, with warm, dry days ideal for hiking and swimming in the rivers. Winter, from June to August, is cool and wet in the valley, and snow falls in the mountains to the east, where Antuco volcano has a small ski area.
Spring and autumn are mild and green, and autumn colours in the foothills are lovely. Long-haul seats from Changi get scarcer when Singapore schools break in June and December, and again around Chinese New Year. Chilean domestic travel is busiest in the January and February summer break and around the national holidays in mid-September. Compare the price chart on this page to spot quieter dates.
North of the city, the Laja River plunges over a wide rocky ledge in a series of waterfalls. It is the area's best-known sight, with viewpoints, riverside walks and summer swimming spots a little downstream.
East towards the Andes, this national park surrounds a high mountain lake beneath the cone of Antuco volcano. Lava fields, trails and clear views make it a favourite for hikers in summer and a snowy landscape in winter.
In the coastal range to the southwest, Nahuelbuta protects forests of ancient monkey puzzle trees, the araucaria. On a clear day the Piedra del Águila viewpoint looks across to the Pacific on one side and the Andes on the other.
The main square in central Los Ángeles is the heart of city life, surrounded by shops, cafés and civic buildings, and it is a pleasant place to watch local life after a day in the mountains.
Chile's second-longest river runs close to Los Ángeles, and its valley is dotted with farms, vineyards and quiet riverside towns worth a slow drive.
Most visitors stay in the centre of Los Ángeles, around the Plaza de Armas and the main commercial streets, where restaurants, banks and bus services are all within walking distance. Travellers who come mainly for the waterfalls base themselves in the Saltos del Laja area, where lodges and campsites line the river. For hiking and skiing, the small towns on the road towards Antuco put you closer to Laguna del Laja National Park.
Baked pastry parcels filled with minced beef, onion, olives and hard-boiled egg are Chile's favourite snack and are especially popular around the September national holidays.
A summer dish of seasoned meat, chicken and olives topped with a sweet, creamy layer of ground fresh corn, baked in a clay bowl until golden.
A hearty broth with a large piece of beef or chicken, potato, pumpkin and corn on the cob, perfect after a cold winter's day in the Biobío valley.
Fresh ground corn mixed with onion and basil, wrapped in corn husks and steamed, often eaten in late summer when the corn harvest comes in.
