A 10-minute walk from Gangnam Station. Nearby, there are convenience shops. Next to the hotel is a very nice and affordable Korean BBQ shop that deserves a dinner visit. The room comes with a washing machine and a Samsung standing steam and iron machine, which is very convenient for light travelers like me who bring the least number of clothing items. Counter staff are friendly and prompt in assistance, too. Daily room service can be coordinated through WhatsApp.

As expected from a Best Western brand, Orakai Daehakro Hotel provided an excellent experience. The staff were incredibly kind, and the facilities were impeccably clean. One of the biggest advantages of staying at a branded hotel was the sense of safety, which allowed me to relax completely. The location is a huge plus for travelers. Myeong-dong is just a 10-minute bus or taxi ride away. Dongdaemun is within a 15-minute walk, making it very convenient for late-night shopping. Changdeokgung Palace, Gwangjang Market, and Daehakro cultural street are all within walking distance. The room rates were very affordable compared to the high quality of the facilities. Transportation from Incheon Airport was also seamless; I took Airport Bus 6011, which dropped me off right across from the hotel. I was especially impressed by the staff, who were fluent in both English and Japanese. Their professional and warm assistance made my stay much more comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Seoul!

South Korea: A Tapestry of Tradition and Tomorrow for Singaporean Explorers

For Singaporean travellers, South Korea presents a captivating blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity, offering a travel experience that is both familiar in its efficiency and thrillingly distinct. Imagine the vibrant energy of Seoul's neon-lit streets juxtaposed with the serene beauty of Jeju Island's volcanic landscapes, or the rich historical narratives woven into the fabric of Gyeongju's ancient capital. This dynamic contrast is precisely what draws so many from our island nation, seeking a destination that stimulates the senses and broadens horizons, all within a manageable travel distance.

The allure of South Korea lies in its remarkable diversity, a characteristic that ensures each visit can be a unique adventure. From the sophisticated districts of Gangnam-gu, known for its upscale shopping and entertainment, to the bustling commercial heart of Jung-gu in Seoul, or the coastal charm of Busan, the country offers a spectrum of experiences. Even within Seoul, areas like Yeongdeungpo-gu provide distinct urban flavours. This geographical variety means travellers can tailor their trip, whether they seek the pulse of a metropolis or the tranquility of a coastal breeze.

Understanding the practicalities is key for any Singaporean planning a trip. With an average price starting from S$143.74 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.5 from over 1.6 million guests, the accommodation landscape in South Korea signifies a commitment to quality and value. This high volume of reviews indicates a well-trodden path for international visitors, suggesting a mature tourism infrastructure that caters well to diverse needs, from budget-conscious explorers to those seeking premium comfort.

Consider the iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, a sprawling complex that whispers tales of Joseon Dynasty royalty. Its grandeur, intricate architecture, and the opportunity to witness traditional guard-changing ceremonies offer a tangible connection to Korea's past. For Singaporean travellers, experiencing such historical depth provides a profound counterpoint to the modern marvels found elsewhere. It’s a place where history is not just preserved but actively experienced, making it a cornerstone of any cultural exploration. Planning your stay near such landmarks is made easy when you book hotel with us.

Business travellers will discover world-class facilities in commercial hubs. Understanding these nuances helps in selecting the ideal base, whether it's the trendy streets of Hongdae for the young and adventurous, or the serene environs of a temple stay for those seeking spiritual retreat.

Best Areas to Stay in South Korea

A Culinary Journey Through South Korea

South Korea's culinary landscape is a vibrant exploration of flavours, textures, and aromas that captivate the senses. Beyond the globally recognised dishes, there's a deep-rooted tradition of seasonal ingredients and regional specialities that offer a unique gastronomic adventure for Singaporean travellers. From the fiery kick of kimchi to the comforting warmth of bibimbap, each meal tells a story of the land and its people, providing a delicious insight into Korean culture that extends far beyond mere sustenance.

For those seeking authentic flavours, the bustling markets and food streets are indispensable. In Seoul, Gwangjang Market is a legendary spot for traditional Korean street food, offering everything from savoury jeon (pancakes) to hearty tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). For Muslim travellers, finding halal options requires a bit more planning; while dedicated halal restaurants are increasing, especially in areas like Itaewon, many travellers opt for vegetarian dishes or seek out restaurants with clear halal certifications. It's always advisable to confirm dietary needs directly with establishments.

The regional diversity of Korean cuisine is a compelling reason to explore beyond the capital. Busan, for instance, is celebrated for its fresh seafood, with dishes like 'dwaeji gukbap' (pork soup) and 'sijang gukbap' (market soup) being local specialities. Further south, the island of Jeju offers unique ingredients like black pork and abalone, prepared in distinct island styles. These regional variations mean that each city visited can offer a new and exciting culinary discovery, enriching the travel experience.

Navigating dining in South Korea is generally straightforward for Singaporean visitors. Meal times are typically around noon for lunch and 6-7 PM for dinner. Tipping is not customary and can sometimes be seen as impolite, so be prepared to pay the listed price. Portion sizes are often generous, and sharing dishes is common practice, especially in restaurants. Learning a few basic Korean phrases for ordering can be helpful, though many establishments in tourist areas have English menus or staff who can assist.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in South Korea

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a smooth and enjoyable trip to South Korea. While generally a very polite society, there are a few nuances that Singaporean travellers should be aware of. For instance, it's customary to use two hands when giving or receiving items, especially from elders or superiors, as a sign of respect. Similarly, when dining, waiting for elders to start eating before you do is a common practice that shows consideration.

When visiting places of worship or historical sites, maintaining a respectful demeanour is paramount. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and be mindful of photography rules, as some areas may prohibit it. In public spaces, keeping noise levels down, especially on public transport, is appreciated. While South Korea is a very safe country, being aware of your surroundings and keeping personal belongings secure, particularly in crowded markets or on busy subway lines, is always a good practice.

South Korea boasts an excellent public transportation system, making it easy and safe to get around. The subway networks in major cities are efficient and well-signed, often with English announcements. For ride-hailing services, Kakao T is the most popular app, functioning similarly to Grab in Singapore. Keeping your hotel address handy in Korean can be useful for taxi drivers. Overall, the country has a low crime rate, and travellers generally feel very secure, even when exploring late at night.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in South Korea is 119 for police and fire services. For medical assistance, it's also 119. Singaporeans travelling to South Korea are advised to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions. While there isn't a Singapore Embassy in South Korea, the Singapore Embassy in Seoul is the primary point of contact for consular assistance. It's always wise to register your travel with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) before your departure.

Travel Guide to South Korea

For Singaporean travellers, reaching South Korea is a straightforward affair, with numerous direct flights available from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Incheon International Airport (ICN) and Gimpo International Airport (GMP) in Seoul. Major airlines like Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, and Asiana Airlines operate these routes, with flight durations typically ranging from around 6.5 to 7 hours. Prices can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but planning ahead can secure more favourable fares.

Once in South Korea, navigating between cities is remarkably efficient. The KTX high-speed train network connects major urban centres like Seoul, Busan, and Daegu swiftly and comfortably, offering scenic views along the way. For destinations not covered by rail, intercity buses provide an extensive network, and domestic flights are available for longer distances, such as to Jeju Island. Within cities, extensive subway systems and reliable bus routes make local travel convenient and affordable.

The best time to visit South Korea from Singapore largely depends on your preferences for weather and activities. Spring (March to May) offers pleasant temperatures and blooming flowers, while autumn (September to November) boasts vibrant foliage and crisp air, making them peak seasons. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with a rainy season, while winter (December to February) is cold and snowy, ideal for winter sports. Visiting during shoulder seasons can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds.

Before departing, Singaporean travellers should prepare a few essentials. The local currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). While credit cards are widely accepted, carrying some cash for smaller vendors or markets is advisable. Purchasing a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi device upon arrival is recommended for staying connected. Essential apps include Kakao Maps or Naver Maps for navigation (Google Maps has limited functionality for driving directions in Korea), and translation apps can be very helpful.

Entry Requirements for Singaporean Citizens to South Korea

Singaporean passport holders generally enjoy visa-free entry into South Korea for tourism and short business visits. This allows for a convenient and hassle-free travel experience, aligning with South Korea's aim to attract international visitors. Typically, Singaporeans can stay in South Korea for up to 90 days without a visa, provided the purpose of visit is not for employment or long-term study.

While a visa is not required for short stays, travellers must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. It is also prudent to carry proof of onward travel, such as return flight tickets, and sufficient funds to cover your expenses during the visit. Although not mandatory, having comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical or personal emergencies.

Visa policies and entry requirements can be subject to change. Therefore, it is always best practice for Singaporean citizens to verify the latest information with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Singapore or the official Korean Immigration Service website before planning their trip. This ensures that you have the most up-to-date details regarding entry regulations and any necessary documentation.
