Hong Kong Airlines (IATA code: HX) is a Hong Kong based airline established in 2006, with its main hub at Hong Kong International Airport. One of the ways Hong Kong Airlines proves its dedication is by providing a 20 kg baggage allowance for its Economy Class passengers and 30 kg baggage allowance for its Business Class passengers. However, Economy Class passengers traveling between Hong Kong and Southwest Pacific (Australia and New Zealand) or between Area Three and Southwest Pacific via Hong Kong are entitled to a 30 kg of baggage allowance, while Business Class passengers will get 40 kg of baggage allowance. In addition, each Economy Class passenger is also allowed to carry one piece of cabin baggage, which must not exceed 45 inches (56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm) in size and 7 kg in weight. This requirement also applies to the Business Class passengers, but they are allowed to carry two pieces of cabin baggage. The journey of Hong Kong Airlines began when a man named Robert Yip, the chairman of China Rich Holdings, established CR Airways in Hong Kong in March 2001. The airline received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department in early 2002. In 2003, CR Airways became Hong Kong’s third passenger airline after receiving a revised AOC from the Director of Civil Aviation and operated its first passenger flight on the next day. Four years later, in 2006, a man named Mr. Mung Kin Keung acquired 55% of the airline’s share and thus became the controlling shareholder. Along with this acquisition, CR Airways officially changed its name to Hong Kong Airlines. The airline introduced a new logo, which represents a bauhinia flower, the symbol of Hong Kong where the airline is based. The new logo also represents the close relationship between the airline and Hong Kong, marking a new era in the civil aviation industry. In 2011, Hong Kong Airlines successfully increased its passenger traffic to 2.5 million with a total of 25 destinations. Hong Kong Airlines also introduced its first Airbus A320 passenger aircraft, which made the number of its operating fleet to reach 20 aircraft. Finally, in 2013, Hong Kong Airlines replaced all their Boeing aircraft with Airbus fleets. The airline also launched a new flight route between Hong Kong and Maldives, as well as exceeded four million passenger traffic. Other new flight routes were launched in 2014, which are between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City, Tianjin, and Kagoshima. The TV commercials aimed to showcase the image of Hong Kong Airlines flight attendants. Besides airing the TV commercial, Hong Kong Airlines also became the aviation sponsor for the TV drama “Triumph in the Skies II”. With its progress and achievements, Hong Kong Airlines is determined to keep expanding its network. In 2015, the airline launched new routes to Miyazaki, Yancheng, and Nanchang, as well as increasing its flight frequencies to Bangkok and Nanjing. This year was also special because Hong Kong Airlines was awarded HKIA Airport Safety Recognition Scheme Awards. One year later, precisely in November 2016, Hong Kong Airlines commemorated its 10th anniversary with a grand celebration. The guest list ranged from government officials to business leaders. Hong Kong Airlines also used the anniversary to launch its next phase of growth and expansion with the theme of “Flying Beyond”. The new phase includes further route expansion to current and new markets, fleet growth and expansion with the Airbus A350, as well as enhanced customer service, amenities, and facilities. Today, Hong Kong Airlines serves flights to 36 major cities across the Asia Pacific region, including Gold Coast, Auckland, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, Sapporo, Seoul, Bangkok, Bali, and Okinawa. Hong Kong Airlines’ fleet has also grown to 34 operating aircraft, consisting of nine of Airbus A330-300, nine Airbus A330-200, 11 Airbus A320, and five Airbus A330-200F for cargo.
