This discount plan includes a round-trip bus ticket and a round-trip ropeway ticket.

Take a relaxing bus ride between Yamagata Station and Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. Buses leave approximately every hour, so you can board whenever you prefer.

This ticket plan is the perfect way to see the rime ice!

The best time to see the rime ice is usually from late January to mid-February.

Date and Time: 12/24/2022 (Sat.) - 2/27/2023 (Mon.) 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm (last uphill train departs from Zao Sanroku Station at 7:50 pm)

* If you wish to see the illumination and return the same day, please take the bus from Yamagata Station no later than 4:20 pm.

* On days when there is no illumination, please take the bus from Yamagata Station no later than 2:20 pm.

Zao Rime Ice (Snow Monster)

Rime ice is a natural art form that can only be created when a number of natural phenomena coincide. The only places in the world where rime ice can be seen are Zao, Hakkouda in Aomori, Hachimantai in Akita, and Schwarzwald, the Black Forest in Germany. The rime ice seen in Zao from late December to mid-February each year is nicknamed Snow Monster. This rime ice is a rare natural art form that can only be seen in a few areas where a combination of conditions exist, including the mountain and basin layout, northwest winds from Siberia, low temperatures that bring powder snow, and evergreen coniferous trees (Abies mariesii).
