- Spot Information - 

Rime ice is a natural art form that can only be created when a number of natural phenomena coincide. The only places in the world where rime ice can be seen are Zao, Hakkouda in Aomori, Hachimantai in Akita, and Schwarzwald, the Black Forest in Germany. The rime ice seen in Zao from late December to mid-February each year is nicknamed Snow Monster. This rime ice is a rare natural art form that can only be seen in a few areas where a combination of conditions exist, including the mountain and basin layout, northwest winds from Siberia, low temperatures that bring powder snow, and evergreen coniferous trees (Abies mariesii).
