Upscale hotel in Penang
Beautiful and spacious room. Breakfast was excellent. Quiet place, we only encountered one other couple during our two night stay. Not sure if that is usual, but since the hotel only has 8 rooms even if it was full up you shouldn't expect much of a crowd.

Beautifully restored, convenient location
Macalister Mansion is a beautifully restored colonial mansion in the heart of historic Georgetown. Each room is unique and over my numerous stays here, I have stayed at rooms 4, 6 and 8. All the rooms were very spacious and beautifully done up. The rooms are stocked with complimentary Nespresso and local snacks and the amenities are top notch. The mansion is located on Macalister road, a main thoroughfare. It is within walking distance of the Macalister food street and a lot of the local attractions. Some not so good points - It is somewhat pricier than most hotels on the island and parts of the carpet is showing some wear. But these are minor issues.

Potential For Upscale Botique Hotel
My Girlfriend planned a surprised birthday for me at this hotel and I have to say the product (room facilities, hotel facilities) is good. I stayed in room 6 but was alittle disappointed that the key is a manual key instead of a tap in key. I only managed to know how to use the do not disturb button when the Housekeeping attendant entered our room when we were showering during the early evening. The chain lock was faulty and despite I reminded them not to enter our room after this incident, they still did the turn down service for us. The receptionist seem very calm when I told her about it and I only get my answer when I asked the next day during my check out. Probably the one of the 2 negative experience for us. The second time was given a Avacado breakfast despite special requests. Was asked for room number twice (goes to show that the staff are not communicating). Appreciate if server can check on us after serving our dish (because the whole restaurant only had us). To lighten things up, I like the free complimentary mini bar drinks and express capsules, chocolates and upscale bathroom. Keycard was all the while in the room as weather was warm. Service staff always have a smile and helpful. Location was not an issue as we travelled everyone by uber (RM4-5) for every destination. The map they provided to us was not as informative to the ones that I can get on the streets that has landmarks and indicating numbers of the street arts and sounveior shops. Overall, it's a good stay however becos of the price tag that promises the value I expect to have. I only give 3/5. Would recommend this hotel to couples friends if they are heading to Penang, but definitely share with them about the Peace and quiet button.

Extremely disappointed
We usually don't write negative reviews and prefer to share any problems directly with the hotel management, but this hotel has been an extreme disappointment and the hotel management has even refused to deliver a sincere apology that we had requested. First of all, we would have been disappointed with the hotel under any circumstances. A hotel with only 8 guest rooms sounds like the perfect quiet haven and the peak of individualized attention. The online images also seem to support this. But we felt these pictures paint a wrong impression. The hotel was not as charming as we had expected, the views were basically nonexistent, and the location was also somewhat disappointing. Much more than our overall disappointment with the hotel, we were extremely unhappy about the hotel personnel. I had booked a stay as a romantic getaway for my girlfriend and me. Unfortunately, an emergency prevented me from traveling. Since the rate was not refundable, my girlfriend decided to travel on her own with a friend. I am a platinum member of Starwood and consequently entitled to a few benefits at participating hotels. I understand completely that we are only legally entitled to these benefits when I travel myself and that my girlfriend can be refused any benefit when I am not with her. But the hotel check-in clerk decided to deny her all benefits (including those that would not have cost the hotel anything and are routinely granted upon availbility at other hotels even to non-members) simply because the hotel was under no legal obligation to provide them. She got there around 11:00 am and the hotel confirmed that the room was already available, but still refused to let her check-in because she was not entitled to the early check-in. To be very clear, I am not upset that she did not receive any of these benefits, but I am very angry about the way she was treated and made feel unwelcome. It is bad enough when you have a romantic vacation planned and cannot travel together in the end. If the check-in clerk immediately conveys that she is not a valued guest in my absence, it leaves an extremely bitter taste. We will never stay at this hotel again. There are many much nicer hotels in Penang at a better price and with a far superior customer service.

Boutique Hotel finished to a very high standard
My wife surprised me with a long weekend here to celebrate my birthday. We stayed for 3 nights in their largest style room with private balcony. The room is very modern and finished to a high standard. The room service is very prompt and they do their best to accomodate requests such as decanting wine in advance so it it has time to breath. Both bars are excellent and the wine list is very good and well priced for a hotel in Malaysia. The restaurant is excellent. As is the day time food. I felt the breakfast was a little weak given the strength of the rest of the cooking. For example soft boiled eggs (which are on the menu) took multiple attempts and arrived after we had finished eating. My only suggestion rather than complaint is regarding the bar. The barman starts early evening so during the day there could be a buzzer system or a whatsapp number to get service. A small thing but it would lift the service level again. We enjoyed an afternoon by the pool and after our comments on the bar service they came out to check if we needed anything regularly which was great. Overall I thought the hotel was excellent and we will definately stay here next time we are in Penang.
