Good rooms good food good price

The property looks a lot more impressive from the outside than it does on the inside. The room we stayed in was tired, and dated, and looked in need of a refresh. The room was small, and as with a number of lower market hotels there was no mini fridge. Only being there for one night we could live with that, but for a longer stay it would have been a nice option to have. But the main problem was the noise. We could see that there were not many people staying at the hotel, by the number of cars outside, but for some reason, they appeared to have put all of the guests into the same area of the hotel. Now I get why you might do this to make things easy for the cleaner, but thats a problem when you have very thin walls and poor sound insulation. You could hear people's conversations, people walking about, and we had the lovely experience of hearing one of the guests with a hacking cough, coughing all night (at one point I was going to get up and ask him if he wanted a drink to help his throat). As if that wasn't enough the wind got up, and every time the wind blew, there was a door banging open and close somewhere in the hotel. Coupled to this, the wind rattled the windows against the window frames, leading to a symphony of noise throughout the night. When we checked out and left in the morning the member of staff (when she turned up at the desk) didn't even bother to ask how our stay had been. The funny thing is that it wasn't even cheap so no excuses there either.

The room was clean and cosy. The staff were friendly and polite.

Traditional scottish themed country manor , lovely grounds , great choice for breakfast , pet friendly too. very homely welcome from staff, really pleasant stay 👍

The staff were excellent. The food was excellent. Our dog was a bit boisterous, but the staff were understanding. The public toilet was a bit tired looking.

Just a superb place. Prices reasonable and you don’t feel it’s all about taking your money

When we arrived the hotel was open but no staff around. 1pm on a Saturday, bar locked and phoned the reception to alert attention but nobody appeared. Had to leave for an event and finally got someone on the phone at 3pm who said the hotel shuts between 12-3pm (door was wide open? Fire safety etc?) they said they’d leave the side door of the hotel open as we wouldn’t arrive back until midnight to get our room keys and the hotel is unmanned overnight. The side door was NOT left open and lucky another guest arrived back at the same time to let us in. We would have slept in cars otherwise. Find it really strange a hotel can be left unstaffed. The one staff member we met at breakfast was very pleasant but I’d say for nearly £200 for one night this was pretty poor service. The room was beautiful but is needing a bit of updating in the bathroom and things. The grounds looked lovely but it was raining so we didn’t venture too much.

The hotel has a very comfortable and pleasant atmosphere - the rooms of various sizes are all stylish and the bar / restaurant was good and seemed popular with local residents (good sign). Good value for money.

Dinner and breakfast were both good. Service excellent. Recommended.

Lovely hotel but further out of town than we had expected. Restaurant closed on first night there. Otherwise perfect for our stay.

A convenient stay for our purposes

More of a B&B from a different era than a hotel. It’s a nice building & we had a superior room but the modern toilet was on short-flush and took forever to noisily refill. On checkout this was explained away as being an old building..really? Most of the staff were keen to help. Sadly the various policies made us feel like more of an inconvenience than valued guests. Some of the policies are not publicised. For example the ‘hotel’ closes in the afternoon and if you don’t vacate your room by ? time then forget room cleaning or replenished supplies. arrivals after 4pm must inform in advance. Even though the restaurant is open until 11 you must be seated by 8 to select from the whole menu but they would ‘leave the pizza oven on’. I was informed by FB message that this had been their policy for years as if this was relevant and that it would have been stated in the Expedia confirmation which it wasn’t. Tip: quoting non-existent t&cs at a hotel guest who merely wants fed ain’t great hospitality. Arrived at 8.30 and allowed the full menu as if it was a special favour. Food was fine and in large quantities if that is your thing. Nearly £180 per night plus £100 on dinner and a few extras was poor value. Check out is 10.30 (medieval). 12pm check out is extra. Intrigued that the last Expedia review was 7 months ago and most are pre-pandemic. Decor eclectic with the framed mirrors in the restaurant depicting chimpanzees smoking cigars/ playing cards being the pièce de résistance.

Overall the place we ok for a one night stop over. Main issue was there was no kind of room service menu when we arrived after 9.30pm. With all shops, takeaways and restaurants closed locally at that time there was no way to eat and when a hotel is in a town where there is a lack of facilities its important that they have some kind of offering even if just a simple sandwich

Lovely stay

Second time I have stayed at this country house hotel although many years apart. Had reviewed on TA previously and raved about the place. It has changed hands since my last visit but tbh is as good if not better. Spookily got the same room as last time and it is still super. Confy bed, plenty space, nice sofa to sit and watch TV and nice en suite shower. Only very minor complaint is shower is slightly underpowered but pipes are no doubt old and pressure will be limited so can excuse that. This visit was of course during the latest lockdown and service is slightly limited although the restauarnt with full menu is still open for dining until 8pm and you can have a beer or wine. Food and service was first class and great value for money. You can't linger in the bar due to the rules but hey it was a schoolnight so no hardship there. Limited staff working and all were extremely pleasant, helpful and friendly, a credit to the establishment. Great stay once again and still a lovely place to go to. Will be back when the world returns to normal hopefully. Thanks very much.

An excellent stay. From arrival to departure the Staff were excellent. We had an evening meal, which was outstanding. The food was presented to a very high standard. The Menu on offer is vast to say the least, which made selections difficult, which was a nice problem to have! We had a lovely room which was lovely. It was our first time we have stayed and will definately not be the last. Would highly recommend the Hotel.

Very welcoming, good room, enjoyable visit

Very pleasant hotel - friendly and accommodating staff. Room was a good size and comfortable bed.
