The positives. The staff are lovely. Food is good The negatives. The carpets are beyond filthy! I dread to think what lurks under the bed The toilet brush is disgusting. It stank and seems like it's never been cleaned There was chewing gum on the seat which just had to clean off. There was a pleather chair in the cotner but i wasn't going to chance sitting on that The bed was mediocre to sleep in (not that I slept much) and the pillows were not good The croissants at breakfast are croissant shaped bread rolls! Not pastry based but dough! Why? Nowhere near a 4* as claimed

Staff were great, the hotel looked stunning and the grounds were amazing. The breakfast was delicious too. The room we had was in the attic so I kept hitting my head, the main light in the room was above the doorway which was around a corner so didn’t really help at all. There was water and hair in the bottom of the shower when we arrived as if someone had only just had a shower. There were patches of damp in the room around the window and on the ceiling.

We chose this hotel because of its countryside location and were looking forward to a quiet break outside of Durham City Centre for a weekend trip. Unfortunately, a large event took place during our stay and we were not informed in advance, despite being told that guests are usually notified when such events are taking place when I raised the issue. The event resulted in significant noise late into the evening, and there was no evening food service available to resident guests as a result. Had we known this beforehand, we would have chosen alternative accommodation. The room itself was also disappointing. The décor was tired, the window did not close properly, the shower leaked, and there were noticeable stains on the flooring. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, and our concerns are directed at the hotel's communication and overall guest experience rather than the team on the ground. We have no objection to the hotel hosting large events, but guests should be informed when such events are likely to affect their stay. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Staff were really great. It was unfortunate that a thunder storm had caused a problem in the kitchen meaning dinner wasn’t possible but that was fixed by breakfast next day. Good breakfast except no ‘proper’ coffee. The hotel is a lovely old building, with nice rooms, although a few areas would benefit from a freshen up. Nice grounds to take in too.

Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was great with a huge choice of options.

It was a lovely hotel staff are wonderful nothing too much trouble. The food was very good, the garden and grounds were very well kept. Would go back there. Worth a visit.

We stayed in room 102 (cosy room) a lovely little room over looking the gardens. The room was clean and spacious with a walk in shower. We had breakfast which was delicious , served by Rachel the hotel manager, she was bubbly and very approachable giving plenty of suggestions for our trip. The hotel is normally busy but turned out we were the only guest for the evening which made for a peaceful stay (no complaints here)

Quiet and clean place to stay, and booked this for a work trip. Bathroom shower came off suddenly, which could have led to serious accident. Friendly staff and breakfast was great.

Breakfast and evening meal was excellent - compliments to the chef. The bed was very comfortable, we felt a couple more drawers were needed, the blind needs attention, all in we had a lovely time.

The hotel is ok but the staff is really terrible,when we came into the place me and wife said hello to them and they don’t even respond,plus one of the lady don’t even want to check us in ,a different lady came to give us the key,and just told us to go stairs.

Overall good value for money. Beautiful place, beautiful restaurant. Breakfast was good. Breakfast lady was friendly and helpful.Toilet/ shower is very small but we managed. Room needs a good clean especially the carpet in room 107.

Room was tiny (booked a superior double) and not overly clean (dust all headboard and bathroom needed a more thorough clean!) Walls are paper thin and could hear everything from next door (daughters got woken by their next door neighbours returning back at 1:30am) Very short staffed so long wait times. Food was mixed- steak was v v oily but beef pie was lovely (veg and potatoes cold though) Breakfast wasn’t great, rock hard poached and fried eggs, microwaved defrosted ciabatta (not toasted) and supermarket bought waffles. Bit disappointing really, probably won’t stay again
