Dar Oulhoum

Bruno and Guy have a little gem of a Riad. Great breakfast. Tip: make use of the taxi transfer they arrange, to bring you to the Riad. It’s very difficult to find. I got lost and ended up being harassed by locals wanting money to take me to the Riad. Standard practice here, with so many unemployed folk hanging about.

Riad Dar Oulhoum er en eventyrlig oplevelse. En godt gemt perle i den rolige ende af Medinaen hvor man oplever det mere lokale miljø, samtidig med at man er 5min fra Souken. Værterne er søde, hjælpsomme og kompetente. Maden god, værelserne flotte, ægte og rene, tagterrassen fantastisk. Vi vil bestemt komme tilbage.

Ich war schon in vielen Hotels und anderen Unterkünften, aber so etwas wie das Dar Oulhoum habe ich noch nie erlebt. Es war unser erster Besuch in Marrakesch und bei der Anreise waren wir erst etwas geschockt. Driss der Hausengel holte uns vom Transit, welcher durch das Riad organisiert wurde, ab und lieg mit uns und unserem Gepäck durch das Strassen Wirrwarr Marrakeschs. Dar Oulhoum ist in einer verwinkelten Gassen hinter einer grossen Tür versteckt. Und was wir dort fanden, war das Paradies. Mitten in einer irren und lauten Stadt eine ruhige Oase, in der man augenblicklich zur Ruhe kommt. Drei wunderschöne Suiten mit einem unvergleichlichen Innenhof mit Brunnen und einer grandiosen Dachterrasse. Jedes Zimmer ist mit viel Liebe und wunderschönen Details ausgestattet. Die Besitzer Bruno und Guy sind unglaublich sympathisch und wir fühlten uns ab der ersten Minute wie zuhause. Man fühlt sich wie ein Familienmitglied. Alle Fragen wurden beantwortet, wir bekamen viele wertvolle Tipps zu Marrakesch und sogar eine persönliche Führung von Guy durch die Medina. Tagesausflüge wurden bin Bruno organisiert und perfekt geplant, vielen Dank. Der Frühstück war jeden Tag anders, mit frischen Backwaren, frischem Orangensaft, Früchte und Eierspeisen. Der Thé à la Menthe war ein Gedicht. Driss und Sheriff waren stets zu Diensten und haben mit Ihrer Freundlichkeit und Gastfreundschaft jeden Tag zum Erlebnis gemacht. Nora hat unser Zimmer jeden morgen auf Hochglanz geputzt.

From the moment we arrived our hosts made us welcome and to feel like part of their family. The Dar Oulhoum is an old building within the Medina oozing character and many original features. The rooms are something to behold, each different to the other with furniture and features of the culture from the area and beyond. Our bathroom was luxurious with an enormous bath and double shower head. Hot water was not a problem. The breakfast was large and freshly prepared each morning with freshly squeezed orange juice, pancakes, fresh bread and yoghurts with fruit. Omelettes we’re available but we couldn’t eat that much! Coffee and mint tea accompany the meal. The roof terrace where this meal is taken has 360 degree views of the area and is decorated with potted plants and shrubs. Look out for their Tortoise who wanders the lower terrace! Wi-Fi is good so connections are there to the rest of the work if needed. Pickups from and to the airport can be arranged with the hosts by email before you arrive to make your journey much smoother. In summation this is the perfect retreat from the huddle and bustle of Marrakech, so close to the souk (about 400m) yet far away enough not to hear the hum of commerce within. Our hosts were helpful leading us through the Souk to Jemma Al Fna Square and other places of interest ensuring we spent more time at the sights rather than on getting to them, although it is difficult not to be be tempted of the your route deeper into the souk. We will go back.
