Amazing property. 600 years old so you should expect some issues. It was lovely though.

I love this hotel and have stayed there three times now. Close to Durham for a lovely walk around. We stayed in the actual castle at the top, which was lovely, but there were so many stairs. We also stayed in the stables, which is where I prefer. Super food and the breakfasts are fabulous. We just like to stay for a while and are about to book again. Great place 👌

It's a 14th century castle, so authentic, the service & the ambience were exceptional. David & Dean in reception were outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. All the other staff were also outstanding & the food was delicious.

Lovely building, but expect 1800’s style rooms!

The property and the room itself were beautiful. We were given an upgrade free of charge which was much appreciated. The location is also very convenient. The staff at the reception were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that spoilt the stay was the cooked breakfast. The bacon and mushrooms were like leather and we could not eat it. On the second day we stuck to the continental items to be safe.

Check-in was excellent. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive from the moment we arrived, making us feel at home straight away. The process was smooth and efficient, and it was a lovely surprise that they had noted we were celebrating a birthday and acknowledged it on arrival. That thoughtful touch made our stay feel even more special. Service throughout our stay was consistently excellent and much appreciated. The hotel could improve by making the room service menu available within the online guest guidebook instead of directing guests to contact reception. It is also worth noting that the advertised cigar and fine spirits den is not currently available, which may be disappointing for guests expecting this facility.

Loved our stay at Lumley Castle! Loads of character and lovely staff. Our room got a bit warm, but the amazing breakfast and unique atmosphere totally made up for it. Way better than a boring chain hotel.

Hotel looks amazing outside and communal areas were ok … we stayed in a courtyard room which was very dated. Bathroom had mould around bath. We fully understood it was very hot when we stayed but a fridge to put the bottled water supplied by the hotel would have been good as it was very warm ! Generally hotel and staff ok just feel it was all needed an bit of a paint and spruce up in our room

Lumley castle is in a beautiful area with an amazing history. The staff were very helpful, polite, attentive and cheery. Evening dining was excellent with a wide selection offered. Breakfast was also excellent with a good selection on offer. Drinks were expensive. Unfortunately our room (Castle classic) described as a double was very small, with a lack of seating for 2 people (1 chair and a stool - no table). The bed was reasonably comfortable but there was little room at either side to negotiate getting in and out of it. There were plenty of plug sockets which was great but no USB connection points. The television was very small and difficult to watch - the only place to watch it was from the bed. There was a small step to enter the bathroom which was not easily identified and caused both of us to trip a couple of times. Surely this is a health & safety hazard. We thought that we had booked a walk-in shower (as per room info) but found it to be an over bath shower. The temperature of the shower was difficult to regulate, especially whilst in the shower. There also appeared to be a drainage problem as the water built up in the bath to above ankle level. The room was reasonably clean but very tired looking. The entrance door and the bathroom door were both difficult to open and close as they dragged on the carpet. Overall we enjoyed our stay, the castle being magnificent inside and out. Whilst we appreciate the castle's age the room we had would benefit from some TLC.

As a 600-year old castle, the hotel has a wonderful atmosphere, and all the staff gave a warm and relaxed welcome. We had room in the castle itself, and didn't think it over-expensive at all by our modest standards: excellent facilities, and very good options for eating in the library/bar or the restaurant. You do need a car as the hotel is outside the town - beside a golf course that welcomes visitors, and the Durham Cricket Club ground. We've stayed before, and will be back. The only grumble I can make is that the toast with an otherwise excellent breakfast was consistently a bit soggy!

Decor of Room matched the ambiance of the castle. Staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was one of the best I’ve ever had in a hotel.

An enjoyable stay as always. Staff extremely helpful and nice. Room clean and comfortable. Would have no hesitation in recommending it to any one.

Great spot and a beautiful dat at the castle. Comfortable bed. Nice facilities. Dinner was basic English fare but very tasty. Breakfast was extensive

Simply beautiful and the staff were great at the reception. I met 2 Andrew’s and David and they were very helpful. Breakfast was good although the staff seemed less friendly when requested a different table for breakfast and announced it loudly. Something to note when guests make a discrete request- please keep it discrete.

Lumley Castle Hotel is a truly beautiful property, with its historic character wonderfully preserved. The castle’s charm and atmosphere make the stay a unique experience. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the wonderful breakfast was definitely one of the highlights of our visit.
