Economy Standard

Economy seats are available across all AirAsia flights and airbuses. The legroom is quite spacious and the seats are covered with leather, providing extra comfort for all passengers in Economy Class.

In-flight Meal

AirAsia’s passengers in Economy Class won’t receive free in-flight meals. However, if the passengers want to enjoy AirAsia’s in-flight meals, they can purchase them on board or pre-order them online via AirAsia’s official website. The foods are very scrumptious, especially the Malaysian traditional delicacy, Pak Nasser’s Lemak Rice.

Hot Seat

As well as in the Economy Class, Hot Seat is available across all AirAsia flights and airbuses. Nevertheless, Hot Seat is only situated on row 1 to 5 and next to the emergency doors (row 12 and 14). In addition to getting more spacious legroom, passengers in the Hot Seat will also be prioritized when boarding the plane.

In-flight Meal

AirAsia’s Hot Seat passengers won’t receive free in-flight meals. But, if the passengers want to enjoy AirAsia’s in-flight meals, they can purchase them on board or pre-order them online via AirAsia’s official website. The menus vary from the Malaysian Lemak Rice to the Salty Spicy Salmon a la Japan.

Quiet Zone

Everyone needs a little peace and quiet. That is why since February 2013, AirAsia has provided a Quiet Zone to facilitate passengers who want to fly with a peace of mind. Quiet Zone is located on row 7 to 14 and can only be ordered exclusively, either during booking or check-in process. Passengers who are traveling with guests under the age of 10 (child or infant) are not allowed to sit in the Quiet Zone. For now, Quiet Zone is currently only available in Airbus A330.

In-flight Meal

AirAsia’s passengers in the Quiet Zone won’t receive free in-flight meals. But, if the passengers want to enjoy AirAsia’s in-flight meals, they can purchase them on board or pre-order them online via AirAsia’s official website. The menus are similar with the ones served in the Hot Seat, from the Malaysian Chicken Lemak Rice to the Thai Mango Sticky Rice.

Premium Flatbed

Premium Flatbed is specifically designed by AirAsia to provide more comfort for passengers on long-distance flights. That is why Premium Flatbed is only available in AirAsia X. This spacious seat reclines to a full flatbed whenever passengers desire to do so. It also features a privacy screen, an adjustable headrest and footrest, and pillow and duvet for maximum comfort. Additionally, it also comes with a reading light and a universal power port.

In-flight Meal

All passengers in the Premium Flatbed will receive a free in-flight meal from AirAsia. Passengers are able to choose which meals, drinks, or snacks they want to taste; the flight crew will be more than happy to serve. The menus vary from Thai Green Curry with Rice, Nasi Dagang with Chicken Curry, and Bukhara Chicken Biryani, to Vegetable Pasta with Roast Chicken.

AirAsia Privilege Programs

AirAsia BIG

To show how thankful AirAsia is for the loyalty of its passengers, the airline has created a special loyalty program called AirAsia BIG. First, customers have to create an account by signing up on AirAsia’s official account. After registered as a member of AirAsia BIG, they will receive a BIG ID to start collecting points with every flight booking. If the points have reached certain amount, customers can redeem them online for free flights, hotel stays, seat upgrade, meals, insurance, and baggage. Customers can also transfer their AirAsia BIG Points to their family and friends who have already become BIG members.

Premium Flex

In 2004, AirAsia launched a new service called Premium Flex. This service is designed to give passengers, especially business travelers who are often in a rush, the convenience of a fuss-free journey. Premium Flex guests will get many great perks, one of them is the flexibility to change their flights up until two hours before the flight schedule, free of charge. Premium Flex passengers can change their flight schedule through AirAsia’s website, mobile application, and other AirAsia’s official sales channels. They will also get a 20 kg baggage allowance, Xpress Boarding, and Xpress Baggage. This service is available at all AirAsia flights, except for Sri Lanka.

Xcite Inflight Entertainment

Xcite Inflight Entertainment offers in-flight entertainment through a tablet device. There are many selections of content that have been provided in the Xcite Tabs, ranging from movies and TV series, to music, magazines, and games. In order to enhance the navigation experience, Xcite Inflight Entertainment can be operated using five languages: English, Malaysian, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. All Xcite Tabs are equipped with a set of headphone so that passengers can fully enjoy the entertainment.

AirAsia Premium Red Lounge

All Premium Flatbed and Premium Flex passengers who depart from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are able to enjoy themselves in AirAsia Premium Red Lounge, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2, International Departure. AirAsia Premium Red Lounge is a warm and inviting space, an airport retreat where you can sit back, chill, and even catch up on unfinished business before continuing the journey with AirAsia. Facilities include an array of delectable and fresh selection of foods, a VIP room fully equipped to satisfy passengers’ needs, and a relaxation room where passengers can freshen up at the lounge’s wash and change rooms.

Red Carpet

Even though AirAsia has always been known as a low-cost airplane, it offers a special service called Red Carpet that can make its passengers feel like a VIP from the get-go. Passengers using the Red Carpet service has the privilege to check-in at a special counter so that they won’t have to queue. The Red Carpet service also has an Escort Guest Service that will assist passengers in getting special access to the airport lounge.

Airasia Flight Attendant Uniform

In line with the color of AirAsia’s logo, the official uniform of its flight attendants is also dominated by red, with a little touch of white on some parts. On weekdays, female flight attendants wear a combination of white shirt, red blazer, and red skirt. Meanwhile, male flight attendants wear a black long sleeve shirt and a set of trousers in similar color, making them look more dashing. On weekends, both female and male flight attendants ditch their skirts and trousers for dark blue jeans. While the female flight attendants pair their jeans with a red shirt, the male flight attendants stick with the black long sleeve shirt.

AirAsia Passenger Policy

Infant Passenger Policy (0-2 Years Old)
  • AirAsia reserves the right not to carry 8 days old, or younger, infants on board. However, in the absolute discretion, AirAsia may decide to allow such infants on the flight when such carriage has been permitted by a medical practitioner and when the parent of the infant has signed a Limited Liability Statement.
  • If the kids are still below the age of 2 (24 months), an adult passenger must hold them on the adult passenger’s lap.
  • Each adult passenger can only supervise one infant or child below 2 years old.
  • There is no baggage allowance for infants.
  • Passengers are not allowed to carry a stroller inside the cabin.
Child Passenger Policy (2-12 Years Old)
  • Children above the age of 2 are required to have their own flight tickets and be seated in their own chair.
  • Child passengers will be charged the full adult ticket fare.
  • Children below the age of 12 will not be allowed on board unless they are accompanied by a person of at least 18 years of age.
Pregnant Passenger Policy
  • It is the responsibility of pregnant passengers to advise AirAsia staff of the condition of their pregnancy when booking their seat and when checking in at the counter.
  • For safety reasons, passengers are required to submit an approved medical certificate. The medical certificate must confirm the passenger’s length of gestation, and it shall be dated not more than 30 days from either the scheduled outbound or the scheduled inbound flight departure date.
  • Passengers with a pregnancy of up to 27 weeks must sign AirAsia Limited Liability Statement at the time of check-in to absolve AirAsia from any liabilities.
  • Passengers with a pregnancy of between 28 and 34 weeks must submit an approved medical certificate dated not more than 30 days from the scheduled outbound or inbound departure date, stating and confirming the length of gestation. The AirAsia Limited Liability Statement must be signed at the time of check-in to absolve AirAsia from any liabilities.
  • Passengers with a pregnancy of 35 weeks and above are not permitted on any AirAsia flight.
Disabled Passenger Policy
  • For safety reasons, AirAsia can carry only a maximum of four passengers with reduced mobility (paraplegic or quadriplegic) per flight. However, not more than two quadriplegic passengers are allowed per flight. Under certain circumstances, AirAsia may require passengers to travel with a companion.
  • AirAsia does not accept battery-operated wheelchair or mobility devices. Under certain circumstances, these devices may be accepted if the battery is removed. The maximum weight allowed for the wheelchair or mobility devices is 85 kg.
  • Unless otherwise determined by AirAsia, passengers with a medical condition or illnesses are required to submit a valid medical certificate dated not more than seven days from the date of travel and sign a Limited Liability Statement upon check-in, confirming that they are fit to travel.
  • For the safety of other passengers, AirAsia reserves the right to deny boarding passengers suffering from infectious, contagious, or chronic diseases at AirAsia’s sole discretion.
  • Passengers requiring special assistance and passengers with medical condition/illnesses, including those who may require administering or carrying medication/syringe onboard, are requested to contact AirAsia via live web chat or call center at least 48 hours before their scheduled flight departure date to arrange the type of special assistance required.
  • Passengers requiring a wheelchair service are requested to pre-book it during booking via “Manage My Booking” at least four hours before the scheduled flight departure time. Failure to notify AirAsia may result in any special assistance or wheelchair service being unavailable upon arrival at the airport, and the passenger may be denied boarding.
  • For health and safety reasons, passengers with specific requirements must check-in at the airport.

Not only that, AirAsia also has Premium Flex, which is designed to give passengers the convenience of a fuss-free journey. Premium Flex passengers can change their flight schedule up until two hours before taking off and even upgrade their seat to a Hot Seat as long as it’s available. Each checked baggage must not exceed 32 kg. Passengers whose baggage exceeds the pre-booked allowance will be charged on a per kg basis based on AirAsia’s fee schedule. Alternatively, passengers may also purchase a 15 kg baggage for both domestic and international flights. For AirAsia domestic flights, all baggage must be checked-in at the airport at least 45 minutes prior to departure time. Meanwhile for AirAsia International flights, AirAsia X, and all flights departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2), all baggage must be checked-in at the airport at least one hour prior to departure time. Particularly for AirAsia FLY-THRU passengers, their bags will be automatically tagged for their final destination. Every AirAsia passenger is allowed only one piece of cabin bag on board that must not be bigger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm including handles, wheels, and side pockets, and must fit in the overhead compartment. Additionally, passengers may carry one piece of laptop bag, handbag, backpack, or any other small bag that must not be larger than 40cm x 30cm x 10cm. This item must fit under the seat in front of the passenger. The total permitted weight for two pieces must not exceed 7 kg. Please remember that infants below 2 years old are not allocated any cabin baggage allowance.

AirAsia History

When it was established in 1993, AirAsia was owned by the Malaysian Government. But, in 2001, the former executive of Time Warner, Tony Fernandes, took over AirAsia from the Malaysian Government. Fernandes decided to leave his former job in order to fulfill his childhood dream: to build the first low-cost airline in Asia. Fernandes might not have the experience of running an airline company, but thanks to his extraordinary marketing team, AirAsia was able to officially start their business in 2002 with some new routes at a competitively low promotion cost. In 2003, AirAsia opened a second hub at Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru near Singapore. For the first time, AirAsia launched its first international flight to Thailand. Thai AirAsia was also launched at that time with new flight routes to Singapore and Indonesia. The flight to Macau began operating in 2004, followed by flights to Manila and Xiamen in 2005. Still within the same year, AirAsia also opened new flight routes to Vietnam and Cambodia. A year after that, new flight routes to Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar were also opened. In August 2006, AirAsia took over Malaysia Airlines’s Rural Air Service routes in Sabah and Sarawak, operating under the FlyAsianXpress brand. But the routes were returned to MASwings a year later due to commercial issues. At the end of 2006, Fernandes unveiled a five-year plan to further enhance AirAsia’s presence in Asia. AirAsia proposed enhancing its route network by connecting all of its existing destinations throughout the region and expanding further into Vietnam, Indonesia, Southern China, and India. Through its company sisters, Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia, the plan called for a focus on developing its hub in Bangkok and Jakarta. With increased frequency and new routes, AirAsia increased its passenger volume to 13.9 million in 2007. The volume was continuously increasing that by early 2013, AirAsia’s profits increased by 168% compared to the same period in 2012. By then end of 2012, the airline’s net profit stood at RM350.65 million (around Rp1 trillion) despite a 1% rise in the average fuel price. The triumph of AirAsia Group in operating short-distance flight encouraged Fernandes and team to spread their wings. They opened a long-distance flight service under a new airline name called AirAsia X. In 2007, AirAsia X launched its first long-distance flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Gold Coast, Australia. Today, AirAsia flies to more than 120 destinations in Southeast Asia and Australia. In its day-to-day operation, AirAsia flies Airbus A320 and A330. Airbus A320, which can carry 180 passengers, is used for flights under four hours, while Airbus A330, which accommodates 377 passengers, is used for long-distance flights. In early 2017, AirAsia X finally received an official license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate a flight to the US. This makes AirAsia X the first low-cost airline in Asia licensed to serve scheduled commercial flights to the US, providing it with a greater opportunity to open new flight routes to any destinations in the US, including Hawaii. For an airline that predominantly serves the Asian, Australian, and the Middle East markets, this is considered as a great achievement. AirAsia X is now eager to try new markets, and is considering to re-open the flight route to London.
