YIA is in Kulon Progo Regency, about 45 kilometres west of central Yogyakarta.
The airport rail link runs from the airport station to Yogyakarta's Tugu station in around 40 minutes.
No. YIA replaced Adisutjipto Airport as Yogyakarta's main airport. Adisutjipto is in the city itself and now handles far fewer flights.
Airlines serving YIA include Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air, AirAsia and Scoot.
Yes. International routes have linked YIA with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Check current schedules, as routes can change.
Yes. It was designed to resist strong earthquakes and tsunami waves because of its coastal location in a seismically active region.
DAMRI buses and other shuttle services connect the airport with Yogyakarta and nearby cities.
Travellers often arrange a car or tour transfer from the airport. Allow plenty of time, as it is a long road journey.
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is the main airport for Yogyakarta and the surrounding region of Central Java. It took over from the cramped, city-centre Adisutjipto Airport, which had long run out of space. The first flights arrived in 2019, full commercial operations followed soon after, and the airport now handles the bulk of Yogyakarta's domestic and international traffic.
The airport lies in Temon district, Kulon Progo Regency, on the Indian Ocean coast west of the city. That puts it about 45 kilometres from central Yogyakarta, so plan on a longer transfer than at the old airport.
A single, spacious terminal of more than 200,000 square metres is designed for around nine million passengers a year. The runway is long enough for large wide-body aircraft. Because the site faces the sea in an earthquake-prone area, the airport was engineered to resist strong earthquakes and tsunami waves, a rare feature among Indonesian airports.
Domestic carriers including Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air and Batik Air link Yogyakarta with cities such as Jakarta, Denpasar and Makassar. International services have connected YIA with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, with airlines such as AirAsia and Scoot. Routes and frequencies change by season, so check the latest options when you search.
The easiest way into town is the airport rail link, which runs from a station at the terminal to Yogyakarta's main Tugu station in around 40 minutes. Other options include:
Yogyakarta is the gateway to Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, and to the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan. In the city, visitors explore the Kraton sultan's palace, Malioboro Street and the Taman Sari water castle. Closer to the airport, the Kulon Progo hills and the Menoreh range offer quieter countryside.
Allow enough time for the transfer, especially if you are heading to Borobudur or eastern Yogyakarta. Trains to the airport can fill up at busy times, so it is worth buying your ticket early.
