Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is the main airport in Yogyakarta and is located about 40 kms west of the city centre. The arrival terminal is conveniently located on the first floor and features essential amenities such as baggage claim and currency exchange. 

There are several ways to get to and from the airport. Trains, taxis, buses, or ride-sharing apps like Grab or Gojek are all available depending on what you’re after. 

Taxis are available at the airport’s designated taxi counters and should cost you around AU$25-32 and take around 60-90 minutes to get to the city centre. Ensure you confirm the taxi fare with your driver before starting your journey to avoid unexpected surcharges. 

Taking the train is convenient and will take around 35-40 minutes to get into the city for only AU$1.20-3—incredibly affordable and reliable. However, they only depart every hour, so you’ll need to time your travels accordingly to avoid super long wait times. 

The DAMRI bus also operates once every hour and will cost you AU$5-7 for a 90-minute ride. 

Ride-sharing apps like Gojek and Grab are the go-tos in Indonesia and are great for travellers who have a bit of luggage or just prefer a door-to-door service as soon as they arrive. A Grab or Gojek ride to the city should cost around AU$25-32 and will take around 60-90 minutes. 

Further, many hotels offer an airport shuttle service, which is definitely worth looking into as it may be complimentary to your booking. 

Visa and passport requirements for Australians flying to Yogyakarta

While this is a domestic route within Indonesia, Aussies will need to travel with their passport, and it's crucial that your visa is still valid for your stay in Yogyakarta. 

For Australians travelling to Indonesia, you’ll need to ensure your passport has at least 6 months until expiry from the date you enter the country. Additionally, you must have at least one blank page for any entry or exit stamps. 

In terms of visas, Australians will need to obtain either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or an e-VoA, both of which serve the same purpose, granting tourists up to 30 days in Indonesia.  

Obtaining a VoA is relatively simple and costs approximately AU$50. You can pay for this upon arrival (as the name suggests) in major Indonesian airports (like El Tari in Kupang or Denpasar in Bali). This visa is valid for 30 days. You can apply for an extension for an additional 30 days, but applications for extensions must be made at least 7 days before your initial visa expires. Further, you can only apply for an extension of 30 days once, making 60 consecutive days your maximum stay in Indonesia.
