Overview

CBR handles around 2.8 million passengers a year — modest by the standards of Sydney or Melbourne, but steady traffic reflecting Canberra's role as the seat of the Australian Government and a growing events and tourism destination. The airport is privately operated by the Canberra Airport Group, alongside RAAF Base Fairbairn on the same site. It runs a single, two-level terminal: arrivals on the ground floor, departures upstairs, with domestic and international processing in the same building.

Where CBR Connects

Domestically, Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar link Canberra nonstop to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, while regional carriers Link Airways and Fly Pelican serve smaller centres such as Hobart. Internationally, Qatar Airways is resuming daily Doha–Melbourne–Canberra service from 8 December 2026 (Qsuite business class, Starlink Wi-Fi), Virgin Australia flies direct to Denpasar (Bali), and Fiji Airways connects Canberra to Nadi. Canberra Airport has flagged ambitions to bring back Singapore Airlines and add new links to New Zealand, Hong Kong and Vietnam, though none of those are operating yet.

Qantas is the largest carrier by scheduled departures, followed by Virgin Australia and Jetstar; Qatar Airways and Fiji Airways operate the current international services.

Terminal

CBR's single terminal was progressively rebuilt from the 2010s with a focus on natural light and sustainability; it holds domestic check-in and gates on one side and a dedicated international processing area (customs, immigration, duty-free) on the other.

Getting to and from Canberra

ACT's Rapid 3 bus route runs directly between the terminal and the City interchange in around 20–25 minutes. Taxis and rideshare operate from a dedicated pick-up zone outside the terminal, and both short and long-term car parking are available on-site. There's no rail link yet — a light rail extension from the city to the airport has been proposed as a later stage of Canberra's light rail network, but it isn't funded or built at this point, so don't plan around it.

The terminal has free Wi-Fi, charging points, several cafés and restaurants, duty-free and retail stores, and an airline lounge for eligible passengers.

While You're in Canberra

Beyond the airport, Canberra's national institutions — the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, and Lake Burley Griffin — are all a short drive from the terminal, making CBR a practical way in for both government travel and a capital-city visit.
