Welcome to Launceston — your gateway to Tasmania’s north. As the island’s second-largest city, it serves up colonial-era buildings, wine bars with local drops, and close-by wilderness.
Just minutes from town, you’ll find Cataract Gorge, with its bush trails, suspension bridge, and the world’s longest single-span chairlift. Next, you will hit the cellar doors of the Tamar Valley — one of Australia’s top cool-climate wine regions — and the alpine peaks of Cradle Mountain.
Whether you're here for the pinot or the peaks, here’s what you need to know.
Launceston Airport is in the suburb of Western Junction, around 15 kms south of the city centre. You can get here via the Midland Highway, which takes 15 to 20 minutes or so. Driving from your Launceston accommodation is the main way to get here, with taxis, ride-sharing and car rentals available at the terminal. Keen to go with public transport? Sorry, the above is your only option.
The cheapest time to fly to Launceston is typically during the off-peak season — late autumn (May) and winter (June to August). Airfares tend to be lower thanks to reduced tourist demand but watch out for major events like the wildly popular Dark Mofo Festival, which can bump prices back up. Keep in mind that Tassie gets a lot colder than mainland Australia in winter. The peak season, in terms of crowds and costs, is summer — from December to February.
There is no need for a visa or passport when flying domestically.
It is best to arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight to or from Launceston Airport.
