Whether you’re people watching from Shibuya Sky or getting amongst the crowds yourself at Shibuya Crossing, having a taste of delicious yakitori, crispy tempura, or a refreshing chilled sake at Omoide Yokocho, or finding one-of-a-kind vintage pieces in the hip neighbourhood of Shimokitazawa, there’s something to immerse yourself in within the streets of Tokyo. A city bursting with innovation, cutting-edge technology, but still preserving ancient Japanese traditions, it’s truly an experience you’ll keep thinking back to long after your trip.
Being such a large city, there are two main airports in Tokyo, Narita and Haneda International Airports. This page focuses on flights to Haneda. (You can learn more about flying to Narita here!) Haneda is closer to Central Tokyo, and Narita is a bit further out, but still well connected via express trains and buses.
If you’re looking for a direct flight to Tokyo from other cities, you can also fly to Narita direct from Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns.
Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) is conveniently located close to central Tokyo, taking around 15-30 minutes by train or car. It’s the closer of the two airports in Tokyo.
Typically, the cheapest months to fly to Tokyo are January to early March, just after the New Year holidays. During this time, airlines often offer lower fares as there is less demand. It’s also winter, so you’ll enjoy fewer crowds, crisp air, clear skies, and exciting seasonal festivals, too.
If you want fewer crowds, it’s best to avoid travelling to Tokyo during cherry blossom season in late March to early April, as well as Golden Week in Japan, which occurs from late April to early May, consists of four national holidays, resulting in high domestic travel and more expensive air fares.
You do not need a visa if you have an Australian passport and you’re planning to visit Japan for up to 90 days for tourism.

It’s good practice to arrive at the airport early, especially for an international flight. Whether you’re flying direct or via another international city, plan to get to Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Cairns or Brisbane airports at least three hours before your scheduled departure to Tokyo to ensure you have enough time to go through the security process (as well as some duty-free shopping, of course).
