Bali accommodation: choose the base before the hotel

Bali accommodation ranges from beach resorts and city hotels to inland retreats and private villas. For an Australian holiday, the biggest decision is which part of the island fits your days: restaurants and beach time, a resort stay, an inland escape or an island visit. Start there, then compare rooms for your dates. A cheaper room across the island from your plans can mean more time and money spent travelling.

Where to stay in Bali

These destinations offer different kinds of stays. Choose one that covers your main interests; a second base can add a different experience without making every day a long outing.

• Seminyak: Seminyak hotels suit a holiday built around dining, shopping and the west-coast beach scene. Decide whether you want a beach-facing resort, a hotel near restaurants or a villa for a group. These locations can be several streets apart.
• Kuta and Legian: Kuta and Legian offer beach resorts alongside smaller street hotels. A beachfront address suits a pool-and-beach holiday; a room near bars may suit a different trip. Check the room position if quiet evenings matter.
• Canggu: Canggu accommodation spans Batu Bolong, Berawa, Echo Beach and nearby Pererenan. Pick the pocket containing the cafes, surf access or work space you will use. Being in Canggu does not put every venue within a walk.
• Ubud: Ubud hotels offer an inland change of scene. Central accommodation puts dining and shops closer; the Sayan and Kedewatan valleys suit a retreat where time at the property is part of the holiday. Compare town access and transfers alongside the view.
• Sanur: Sanur accommodation suits an east-coast base with a beachfront walking path and places to eat around Danau Tamblingan. North Sanur also works for planning a boat departure, but confirm the operator’s check-in location before choosing a hotel purely for the harbour.
• Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa: Nusa Dua suits travellers comparing large resort facilities, room categories and meal plans. The adjoining Tanjung Benoa peninsula has a separate coastal setting and water-activity focus. An all-inclusive rate must be booked explicitly; it is not a feature of every room.
• Uluwatu: Uluwatu accommodation includes clifftop resorts and stays around distinct beach and surf pockets. An ocean view does not establish direct access to the sand. Allow for transfers between the property, dining and the beach you plan to visit.
• Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida: Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida require a sea crossing from mainland Bali. They are separate islands with different arrival points and accommodation choices. Match the boat landing to your hotel transfer and leave room in the itinerary for both legs of the journey.

Hotel, resort or private villa?

A hotel can be convenient for a short stay, especially when reception and on-site dining matter. A resort makes more sense when you will use its pools, restaurants or other facilities regularly. A villa can give a group shared space, but compare the actual bedroom arrangement: a separate bedroom, a sofa bed and an extra bed are different booking options. Check whether the pool is private to the booked villa or shared with other guests.

For families, enter every child’s age before comparing rooms. Occupancy limits, breakfast allowances and bedding can change the total. For couples wanting quiet, the specific room location can matter as much as the resort address. For longer stays, look beyond a “villa” or “apartment” label and confirm the kitchen, laundry or work space you need.

Named properties for different stays

The Udaya Resorts & Spa is an Ubud option whose operator lists a shuttle to the centre; confirm the current arrangements if you plan to use it daily. The Apurva Kempinski Bali is in Sawangan, Nusa Dua, with a clifftop setting. Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach is a Seminyak option for comparing hotel rooms and villas. These are different holiday bases, so decide on the location before comparing their room rates.

Compare the whole accommodation cost

Use the same dates, guest ages and room requirements when comparing Bali hotels. Check taxes and charges, breakfast, extra beds, cancellation terms and payment conditions in the selected offer. A private-pool category or an included meal plan can cost differently from an entry-level room at the same resort. There is no reliable island-wide nightly price that represents all those choices.

For a split stay, add the transfer cost and the time needed to check out and settle into the next property. Close neighbours such as Kuta and Legian may be easier to explore from one hotel; an inland stop in Ubud or a separate island stay creates a more distinct change. Compare the combined trip, rather than choosing each room by its headline price alone.

Plan arrival and the final night

Confirm reception arrangements when a flight arrives late, and tell the property your expected arrival time. For an island stay, check the boat’s actual departure point and check-in deadline before booking a mainland transfer. A flight arrival, a drive to the harbour and a sea crossing are separate steps; a published sailing time does not include all of them. Consider a mainland night before your flight home if the island connection would leave little flexibility.
