About Sydney flights

Where is Sydney Airport?

Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport sits about 12km by road from the CBD. It’s just south of the city on Botany Bay, so you’ll likely get a nice view of the Eastern Suburb beaches or Sydney Harbour on your landing or take-off.

How to get to and from the airport to town?

There are several transportation options to take you from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport to the city, including rental cars, taxis, trains, and buses.

  1. By Rental Car: Sydney Airport provides travelers with several car rental companies available at the T2 and T3 domestic arrival terminals. If you’re planning on exploring outside of the city centres, this could be a good way to do it as day trip prices can add up quickly. Compare hire car prices to get the best deal.
  2. By Taxi and rideshare: Another transportation option you might be interested in are taxis. You can ride a taxi to Sydney City for around AU$45-55. Taxis are quite easy to access, as you can find many of them at the front of the terminals. If you want to take a rideshare service, make sure to arrange with the driver for pickup to make it more convenient.
  3. By Train: Looking for an easy way to travel? We recommend taking the train. You can get to Sydney City via the Airport Link, with trains arriving every 10 minutes. The station is located at the northern end of the terminal and is accessible from the arrivals terminal. You can purchase an Opal Card from a station or convenience store near the airport to pay for your trip. Alternatively, if you have a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card, you can simply tap it to pay for your trip.
  4. By Bus: Another option for taking you to the city is by taking a bus or shuttle. You can take the scheduled Sydney Bus Route 402, which stops at T1 International and T3 Domestic terminals. You can easily find the bus stops marked at the arrivals terminals. Use an Opal card or any credit card for your trip.

How early to arrive at Sydney Airport

If you’re on a domestic flight from Sydney Airport, you’ll want to get there at least an hour before departure. Checking a bag? You’ll want to make sure you have a bit of extra time as sometimes the lines can get a bit long, especially during peak travel times.

If you’re on an international flight, it’s recommended to get there about three hours before departure to make sure you have ample time to go through customs.

Regardless of whether you’re flying within Australia or abroad, it’s best to double check with your airline for its recommended time to arrive. Check-in counters usually close 45 minutes before a domestic flight and 90 minutes before an international flight, but it may change depending on your carrier.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Sydney?

To get the best price, we do have a few things to keep in mind. But, mostly, remember that flexibility is key—adjust your travel dates and times slightly to uncover better fares. Use Traveloka’s "cheapest month" feature to help you identify budget-friendly travel windows.

Seasonality and Price Fluctuations

Flight prices to Sydney are heavily influenced by the time of year and demand. The city enjoys a temperate climate, and each season brings unique experiences. However, this also means prices can spike during peak travel periods like summer (December to February) and school holidays.

The cheapest months to fly to Sydney are often between May and August when demand is lower due to cooler weather. While these months might not offer a beach-perfect climate, they’re an excellent time to enjoy Sydney’s museums, food scene, and walks without the crowds. May and June are also when the colourful Vivid festival is on, and it’s definitely a sight to see!

Days of the Week

Mid-week flights (Tuesday and Wednesday) are often cheaper than those booked for weekends. Consider flying out early or later in the evening to save even more.

Booking date

Booking flights to Sydney approximately two to three months in advance is ideal for getting the best deals. Use Traveloka to set fare alerts and track price trends to identify the right time to book your ticket.
