Super great location if you are planning to stay in Perth CBD, as it is just 2 minutes' walk to the Murray Street Mall that has many shops, cafes, restaurants, and also hosts Perth Underground (Train Station). Overall, my 5-night stay was pleasant. The staff was very friendly (just like any of the local Perth residents). The room, however, is a bit small for a two-person stay, but my wife and I made do with it as we spent most of our time outside of the hotel. Will definitely come back.

Food & Dining

A Taste of Western Australia: Perth's Culinary Delights

Perth's culinary scene is a vibrant reflection of its unique location and multicultural influences, offering a distinct taste of Western Australia. Seafood, fresh from the Indian Ocean, is a highlight, with dishes like grilled marron (a local freshwater crayfish) and freshly shucked oysters being local favourites. The region's fertile hinterland also contributes significantly, providing exceptional produce for farm-to-table dining experiences. Travellers from India might find familiar spices in some dishes, while those from the US and Europe will appreciate the quality of Australian ingredients.

Exploring Perth's dining landscape is an adventure in itself, with diverse options scattered across its neighbourhoods. The city centre and Northbridge are hotspots for a wide array of international cuisines, from authentic Italian to vibrant Asian flavours. For those seeking Halal options, Perth has a growing number of certified restaurants, particularly in areas with larger Muslim populations, ensuring that travellers from Nigeria, Kenya, and other African nations can dine with confidence. Elizabeth Quay also offers a selection of waterfront restaurants with stunning views.

Dining in Perth offers a range of price points to suit various budgets. Casual cafes and eateries can provide delicious meals for around USD 15-25 per person, while mid-range restaurants typically range from USD 30-50. Upscale dining experiences, featuring fine Australian wines and gourmet dishes, can cost USD 60 and upwards. For international visitors, these prices generally represent good value, especially when considering the quality of ingredients and the overall dining experience compared to major cities in the US or Europe.

Understanding local dining customs can enhance your experience in Perth. While tipping is not mandatory, it is appreciated for exceptional service, with a 10% gratuity being customary in higher-end establishments. Meals are generally enjoyed at a relaxed pace, and reservations are recommended for popular restaurants, especially on weekends. Be aware of meal times, which tend to be earlier than in some European countries, and embrace the opportunity to try local specialties and Australian wines.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating Perth with Cultural Awareness and Confidence

Perth generally embraces a relaxed and friendly approach to social interactions, but understanding local customs can prevent misunderstandings. Australians are typically informal, and directness in communication is common. It's polite to greet shopkeepers and service staff, and a simple "hello" or "thank you" goes a long way. While casual dress is acceptable in most situations, more formal attire might be expected for fine dining or specific events. Respecting personal space is also important, as is being mindful of noise levels in residential areas.

When visiting popular spots like Elizabeth Quay or the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, general etiquette applies. Queuing is orderly, and patience is appreciated. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always wise to be discreet and avoid photographing individuals without their consent. Dress codes are typically smart casual for most venues, though specific events might require more formal wear. Being aware of and respecting these norms ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

Perth is considered a safe city for international travellers, but standard precautions are always advisable. Keep valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night, and use reputable transport services. Ride-sharing apps like Uber are widely available and reliable. For navigation, offline map applications can be very useful, particularly if you plan to explore areas outside the city centre or venture into natural parks. Staying informed about local conditions is always a good practice.

In case of emergencies, dial 000 for police, ambulance, or fire services. For specific consular assistance, travellers should note the locations of their respective embassies or consulates: the US Consulate is in Perth, the British High Commission has representation, the Indian Consulate is also in Perth, and various African nations have diplomatic ties or honorary consulates. It is highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events.
