Everything is so great about grand Grand Hyatt Taipei; all of the hotel guests can take a close look at 101 tower during New Year's Eve firework. We didn't have to go outside on the street to watch 101. Rooms are so clean; they were very generous to give many complimentary water bottles. Staff were so friendly. Will stay here again for sure!

We stayed here during our layover otw to Jakarta. The staff was helpful to order a taxi (twice, as the first one left us; completely our mistake). Our room was super spacious with two larger single beds. The bathroom was also super big. All in all, it was a recharging stay there. Will definitely go back.

The location is wonderful, a short 1 minute walk from Ximen station and right at the heart of the Ximending walking district. The room was okay, though the layout was a bit strange with the sink on an island near the entrance. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We booked an airport transfer for our early morning flight, and the hotel packed breakfast for us to bring along, since we would miss the buffet breakfast.

We had a pleasant two-night stay at the hotel. It is conveniently located about 20–25 minutes (walk) from Chiayi Night Market. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the hotel offers basic facilities such as a gym and self-service laundry (although there are only two washing machines available). A nice gesture was the complimentary ice cream and coffee at the lounge area, which we really appreciated. Breakfast had a wide variety of options including local Taiwanese cuisine. Overall, it was a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

More about hotels in Taiwan

Taiwan: An Island of Contrasts for the Discerning Global Traveller

Taiwan presents a compelling proposition for international travellers seeking an authentic Asian experience beyond the usual tourist trails. For visitors from the United States and Europe, it offers a unique blend of cutting-edge modernity and deeply rooted traditions, a stark contrast to the familiar landscapes of their home continents. The island's efficient infrastructure, coupled with its stunning natural beauty ranging from mist-shrouded mountains to vibrant coastal cities, provides a diverse mix of experiences. Taoyuan, as a gateway city, offers a glimpse into Taiwan's industrial prowess and burgeoning international connections, while Taichung, further south, reveals a more relaxed pace and a thriving arts and cultural scene, promising diverse explorations for every type of traveller. The island's geographical and cultural diversity means that choosing where to base yourself significantly shapes your Taiwanese adventure. Taoyuan, with its proximity to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), serves as a convenient entry and exit point, ideal for those with shorter stays or who wish to explore northern Taiwan's attractions with ease. In contrast, Taichung, Taiwan's third-largest city, offers a different flavour, known for its artistic flair, burgeoning culinary scene, and access to central Taiwan's natural wonders like Sun Moon Lake. Understanding these regional differences is key to crafting an itinerary that aligns with your interests, whether you're drawn to the bustling metropolis of Taipei or the serene landscapes of the east coast. From a value perspective, Taiwan stands out as an attractive destination for international visitors. With starting prices for accommodation around USD 37.47 per night, it offers considerable affordability compared to many other developed East Asian nations. This economic accessibility is particularly appealing to travellers from India, where budget-conscious family travel is a significant trend, and to European travellers seeking to stretch their travel budgets without compromising on quality. The island's renowned culinary scene, celebrated for its street food and diverse natural produce, further enhances its appeal, promising a gastronomic journey that is both exciting and wallet-friendly for a wide range of global tourists. The accommodation landscape in Taiwan mirrors its diverse appeal, offering options to suit every preference and budget. For instance, the Mayer Inn, a 2.5-star hotel with a solid rating of 7.8 from over 2,000 reviews, provides a budget-friendly option at approximately USD 40 per night, demonstrating the accessible price points available. On the other end of the spectrum, the 4-star Chateau de Chine Xinzhuang, boasting an impressive 9.0 rating from 14 reviews and priced at USD 69.19 per night, showcases the quality of mid-range hotels that offer excellent value. These examples highlight the breadth of choices available, allowing travellers to easily book hotel accommodations that fit their specific needs and financial plans. Taiwan is a destination that caters to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For Americans, its blend of high-tech cities, accessible natural parks, and unique cultural heritage offers an exotic yet safe adventure. European travellers will appreciate the island's rich history, intricate temples, and the opportunity to explore diverse landscapes, all within a compact and easily navigable area. Indian travellers, often travelling with families and mindful of budget, will find Taiwan offers excellent value, delicious food options (with increasing Halal awareness), and good connectivity. For travellers from Africa, Taiwan's growing economic ties and its position as a hub in East Asia can offer regional connectivity and a distinct cultural immersion, often at competitive travel costs.

Best Areas to Stay in Taiwan

Taiwan's allure lies in its remarkable diversity, with each region offering a distinct character that profoundly shapes a visitor's experience. For international travellers embarking on their first journey to the island, understanding these variations is paramount to selecting a base that best aligns with their travel aspirations. From the bustling urban energy of its capital to the serene beauty of its natural landscapes, Taiwan provides a spectrum of environments, ensuring that every visitor can find a corner of the island that resonates with them, making the choice of accommodation a crucial first step in planning an enriching trip.

Taipei City

Taipei, the vibrant capital, pulsates with an electrifying energy that immediately captivates international visitors. It's a city where gleaming skyscrapers stand alongside ancient temples, and bustling night markets offer a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. This dynamic metropolis is particularly appealing to American travellers seeking a modern urban adventure with a rich cultural undercurrent, and European visitors drawn to its historical sites and sophisticated dining scene. The city's efficient public transport system makes navigating its diverse districts a breeze, offering a comfortable and accessible introduction to Taiwan.

From Taipei, exploring Taiwan is remarkably convenient. The city is served by Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), offering direct flights from major hubs like New York, London, and Frankfurt, with journey times typically ranging from 12-15 hours. Within the city, the MRT system is extensive and easy to use. Day trips to nearby natural attractions like Yangmingshan National Park or the historic town of Jiufen are readily accessible. For those looking to explore further afield, Taipei Main Station is a hub for high-speed rail, connecting you to other major cities in mere hours, allowing you to book attractions across the island with ease.

Taichung

Taichung, situated in central Taiwan, offers a more laid-back yet equally engaging experience compared to the capital. Known as the "City of Arts," it boasts a thriving creative scene, unique architectural landmarks like the National Taichung Theater, and a more relaxed pace of life. This makes it an attractive base for European travellers interested in arts and culture, and for Indian families seeking a slightly less frenetic urban environment than Taipei, while still enjoying excellent amenities and a vibrant local life. The city's pleasant climate and friendly atmosphere contribute to its welcoming charm.

Taichung is a strategic hub for exploring central Taiwan's natural beauty. It's accessible via High-Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei in under an hour, making it an easy addition to any itinerary. From Taichung, day trips to the stunning Sun Moon Lake, the picturesque Cingjing Farm, or the dramatic Taroko Gorge (though a longer day) are popular. For travellers arriving internationally, connecting flights to Taichung's Ching Chuan Kang Airport (RMQ) are available, or they can take the HSR from TPE. The city itself is well-connected by bus and taxi, offering a comfortable base for regional exploration.

Kaohsiung

As Taiwan's second-largest city and a major port, Kaohsiung on the southern coast offers a distinct tropical vibe and a more industrial, yet increasingly artistic, character. Its waterfront areas, like the Love River and the Pier-2 Art Center, are vibrant hubs of activity. Kaohsiung appeals to travellers seeking a warmer climate and a more relaxed, port-city atmosphere. It can be particularly attractive to travellers from African nations looking for a coastal city experience with a strong economic pulse, and to American adventurers interested in exploring Taiwan's southern reaches and its unique blend of industry and culture.

Kaohsiung serves as an excellent gateway to southern Taiwan. It is well-connected by HSR to Taipei (approx. 1.5-2 hours) and has its own international airport, Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), with connections to various Asian cities. From Kaohsiung, visitors can easily access attractions like the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, the scenic Kenting National Park with its beaches, and the charming old town of Tainan. The city's public transport, including an MRT system and extensive bus network, makes it easy to explore its many attractions, offering a different perspective on Taiwanese urban life.

Hualien & Taroko Gorge

For travellers drawn to dramatic natural landscapes, Hualien, on Taiwan's scenic east coast, is the primary gateway to the breathtaking Taroko Gorge National Park. This region offers a stark contrast to the urban centres, with towering marble cliffs, lush forests, and the powerful Liwu River carving through the landscape. It's an ideal base for adventure-seeking American travellers and European nature enthusiasts looking for hiking, scenic drives, and a profound connection with the natural world. The slower pace of life here provides a refreshing respite from the island's more developed areas.

Reaching Hualien typically involves a scenic train journey from Taipei (approx. 2-3 hours), offering stunning coastal views. While Hualien has a small airport, most international travellers will fly into Taipei and then take the train. The main draw here is Taroko Gorge, which can be explored via guided tours, private car hire, or local buses. The park offers numerous hiking trails for various fitness levels. Staying in Hualien provides easy access to the gorge, allowing for multiple days of exploration, and offers a chance to experience Taiwan's more rugged and untamed beauty, perfect for those who want to book attractions focused on nature and adventure.

Yilan

Located northeast of Taipei, Yilan County offers a charming blend of natural beauty, hot springs, and traditional culture, making it a delightful escape for those seeking a more tranquil experience. It's known for its picturesque coastline, fertile farmlands, and numerous hot spring resorts, particularly around Jiaoxi. Yilan appeals to European travellers looking for a relaxing retreat with cultural elements, and to Indian families who might appreciate the natural scenery and the opportunity to experience Taiwan's renowned hot spring culture in a less crowded setting than some other tourist hotspots.

Yilan is easily accessible from Taipei by train or bus, with journey times around 1-1.5 hours, making it a perfect destination for a day trip or a short stay. The Kavalan Hotel in Yilan's Luodong township is a good example of local hospitality. Visitors can explore the National Center for Traditional Arts, visit the Wai'ao Beach for surfing, or indulge in the therapeutic hot springs. The region's focus on agriculture also means fresh, local produce is readily available, offering a taste of rural Taiwanese life. Its proximity to Taipei makes it a convenient addition for travellers wanting to experience diverse landscapes without extensive travel.

They can range from charming rural retreats to unique urban stays, offering a more authentic glimpse into daily life and often providing home-cooked meals or local insights that enhance the travel experience.

A Culinary Journey Through Taiwan

Taiwan's culinary landscape is a vibrant testament to its rich cultural heritage and diverse influences, offering an unparalleled gastronomic adventure for international visitors. From the bustling night markets to refined urban eateries, the island is a ideal destination for food lovers. The emphasis on fresh ingredients, meticulous preparation, and bold flavours makes Taiwanese cuisine a standout experience, promising delights that cater to a wide array of palates and preferences, making it a significant draw for travellers from around the globe.

What to Eat and Where to Find It

Taiwan is globally celebrated for its iconic dishes, with beef noodle soup (niu rou mian) and xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) being absolute must-tries. The island's street food culture is legendary, with night markets like Shilin in Taipei or Ruifeng in Kaohsiung offering an overwhelming array of local delicacies. For Muslim travellers from India and Africa, finding Halal options requires a bit more diligence. While Taiwan is not predominantly Muslim, there are an increasing number of Halal-certified restaurants, particularly in larger cities, and many eateries offer vegetarian dishes that can be suitable. It's advisable to look for Halal certification marks or inquire politely about ingredients.

The regional variations in Taiwanese cuisine add another layer of discovery for travellers. Northern Taiwan, including Taipei, is known for its classic night market fare and refined dim sum. Central Taiwan, around Taichung, offers unique local specialties and a burgeoning coffee culture. Southern Taiwan, particularly Kaohsiung and Tainan, boasts a distinct flavour profile, often favouring sweeter notes and a more relaxed approach to dining. Exploring these differences provides a compelling reason for international visitors to travel across the island, experiencing the diverse culinary traditions that define each region.

Understanding local dining customs is key for international visitors. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, though many Taiwanese eat throughout the day. Tipping is not customary in most restaurants, as service charges are often included in the bill. Prices are generally very reasonable, with a hearty meal at a night market costing as little as USD 5-10, and a mid-range restaurant meal ranging from USD 15-30. For travellers from the US and Europe, the emphasis on communal dining and sharing dishes might be a novel experience, while for those from India, the variety of vegetarian options and the focus on fresh produce will be familiar and appreciated.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Taiwan

Navigating a new culture involves understanding its social nuances and safety considerations, and Taiwan offers a welcoming environment for international visitors. The island is known for its politeness, orderliness, and a general sense of safety that allows travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa to explore with confidence. By being aware of local customs and practical safety tips, visitors can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey, fully appreciating the island's unique charm and hospitality.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Taiwan

Taiwanese culture places a high value on politeness and respect, which can be observed in everyday interactions. For instance, when using public transport, it's customary to offer seats to the elderly, pregnant women, or those with disabilities. In shops and restaurants, a polite "xièxie" (thank you) goes a long way. While generally relaxed, showing respect at temples by dressing modestly and refraining from loud behaviour is important. These subtle customs contribute to the harmonious atmosphere that international visitors often remark upon, making interactions pleasant and respectful.

When visiting landmarks, particularly religious sites like temples in Taipei or Kaohsiung, adhering to dress codes is essential. This typically means covering shoulders and knees. Photography is usually permitted, but always check for signs indicating otherwise, and avoid photographing people directly without their consent. In bustling areas like night markets, maintaining personal space and queuing patiently are expected norms. These practices ensure that tourist activities do not disrupt local life and contribute to a positive experience for everyone, reflecting the Taiwanese appreciation for order and consideration.

Taiwan is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in Asia, with low crime rates. For international travellers, managing valuables is straightforward; pickpocketing is rare, but standard precautions in crowded areas are always wise. Public transportation, including the MRT in Taipei and Kaohsiung, is efficient, safe, and affordable. Ride-hailing apps like Uber operate in major cities, and local taxi services are readily available and generally reliable. Having offline maps and translation apps can be helpful, but English signage is common in tourist areas.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Taiwan is 110 for police and 119 for fire and medical services. For US citizens, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is located in Taipei. European travellers can seek assistance from their respective embassies in Taipei (e.g., the British Office Taipei, the German Institute Taipei). Indian citizens can contact the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in India, which handles consular affairs, or the Indian-Taipei Association. For travellers from African nations like Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa, it's crucial to check with their respective embassies or consulates in Taiwan for consular support, and ensuring comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for all international visitors.

Getting to Taiwan and Getting Around

Planning your journey to Taiwan involves understanding the best ways to reach the island and navigate its efficient transportation networks. For international travellers from diverse global markets, knowing the flight options, intercity travel methods, and optimal visiting times ensures a smoother and more enjoyable trip, allowing you to make the most of your Taiwanese adventure.

Getting to Taiwan and Getting Around

Reaching Taiwan from key international hubs is increasingly convenient. For travellers from the US, direct flights are available from major airports like New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO) to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), with flight times typically around 14-16 hours. European travellers from London Heathrow (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), or Amsterdam (AMS) can find direct or one-stop flights, with journey durations ranging from 12-15 hours.

Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) will usually have one or two stops, often in Southeast Asian hubs, with total travel time around 10-14 hours. For travellers from Africa, flights from Nairobi (NBO) or Lagos (LOS) will involve multiple stops, often in the Middle East or Southeast Asia, with longer travel times of 18-24 hours. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better fares.

Once in Taiwan, intercity travel is remarkably efficient. The High-Speed Rail (HSR) system connects major cities along the western coast, from Taipei in the north to Kaohsiung in the south, in just a few hours. For example, the journey from Taipei to Taichung takes under an hour, and to Kaohsiung, around 1.5-2 hours. Regular trains (TRA) cover the rest of the island, including the scenic east coast route to Hualien. Domestic flights are also available, though less common for short distances. Buses are a cost-effective option for shorter routes or reaching smaller towns. This comprehensive network makes exploring Taiwan accessible and convenient for all international visitors.

The best time to visit Taiwan generally falls during its spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, with moderate temperatures and lower humidity, ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with a risk of typhoons, especially on the east coast, while winter (December to February) is cooler and can be damp, particularly in the north. For travellers from India, spring and autumn align well with favourable weather conditions, while for European and American travellers, these seasons offer a welcome escape from extreme weather at home.

Before your trip, ensure you have your passport with at least six months of validity. The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger stores, carrying some cash is essential for night markets and smaller vendors. Purchasing a local SIM card or an eSIM upon arrival is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps, Google Translate, and potentially a local transport app. For travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa, understanding these practicalities will streamline your arrival and initial exploration of Taiwan.

Taiwan Entry Requirements for International Travellers

Understanding the visa and entry requirements for Taiwan is a crucial step in planning your international travel. These regulations can vary significantly based on your nationality, so it's essential to be informed to ensure a smooth entry into the country. Taiwan's immigration policies are designed to facilitate tourism while maintaining security, and being prepared will prevent any last-minute complications.

Visa Information for Taiwan

For travellers from the United States, visa-free entry to Taiwan is typically granted for stays of up to 90 days. European passport holders, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, also generally benefit from visa-free entry for up to 90 days. Indian passport holders often require a visa to enter Taiwan; however, certain conditions, such as holding a valid visa or permanent residency from countries like the US, Canada, Japan, UK, or Schengen Area, may allow for visa-exempt entry for a limited period, typically 30 days. For travellers from African nations, such as Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, visa requirements are generally more stringent, and most will need to apply for a visa in advance through a Taiwanese embassy or representative office.

The application process for a visa, if required, typically involves submitting an application form, passport photos, a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, proof of onward travel (such as a return flight ticket), and sometimes financial statements or an invitation letter, depending on the applicant's nationality and purpose of visit. Fees for visas vary. It is important to note that proof of travel insurance is often recommended, and in some cases, may be a requirement for visa issuance, particularly for travellers from countries with more complex entry protocols. Always check the specific requirements for your nationality well in advance of your travel dates. cheap hotels

Visa policies and entry requirements are subject to change. Therefore, it is imperative for all international travellers to verify the latest information with the official immigration authority of Taiwan or the nearest Taiwanese embassy or representative office in their home country before making travel arrangements. While US and European travellers often enjoy straightforward visa-free entry, travellers from India and many African nations may face a more involved application process. Once your visa is confirmed, you can proceed to book flight tickets and finalize your travel plans with confidence.
