More about Louvre Museum

Louvre Museum

Brief History of Louvre Museum (Musée du Louvre)

The Louvre Museum, or Musée du Louvre, stands as a testament to art and history, located in the heart of Paris. Its origins trace back to the late 12th century when it was constructed as a fortress by King Philippe Auguste. This initial purpose was to defend Paris from potential Viking invasions. As centuries passed, the fortress evolved into a royal palace. In the 16th century, King François I transformed it into a grand royal residence, showcasing the grandeur of the French monarchy.

The Louvre's journey as a public museum began in 1793 during the French Revolution. It was established to serve as a space where the nation's art treasures could be displayed to the public, reflecting the revolutionary ideals of shared heritage and culture.

Over the years, the museum has expanded significantly, incorporating various architectural styles from different periods. Today, it houses over 35,000 works of art, making it one of the most comprehensive art collections globally. Visitors can admire pieces spanning thousands of years, from ancient civilizations to contemporary masterpieces.
