Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park
An Overview: Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park
Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, commonly known as GWK, is a significant cultural site located in Bali, Indonesia. The park was officially opened in 1997, although the construction began earlier in the 1990s. Its main goal was to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia, particularly the vibrant traditions and art forms of Bali.
A standout feature of GWK is the enormous statue of Vishnu, a prominent Hindu deity, riding Garuda, a mythical bird that symbolizes freedom. This stunning statue, designed by the celebrated Balinese artist Nyoman Nuarta, rises to a height of 120.9 meters, making it the fourth tallest statue in the world. This remarkable height and detailed design have made it an iconic symbol of Bali, often referred to as the Island of the Gods.
The park serves as more than just a tourist attraction, it is a cultural place that hosts various artistic performances and events. Visitors can enjoy traditional Balinese dance performances, including the Kecak dance and Ogoh-Ogoh shows, which are held every hour from 11:00 AM WITA. These performances showcase the rich storytelling traditions of Bali through dance, music, and drama, making it a captivating experience for all. Additionally, GWK features unique photo spots that allow visitors to capture beautiful memories against the backdrop of the stunning statue and the park landscape.
