PT Antar Lintas Sumatera, or commonly known as PO ALS, is a bus company (PO) that has been operating since 1966. With more than 50 years of experience, ALS has successfully served numerous destinations across Sumatra and Java by providing a range of bus classes, from non-AC, AC toilet, and AC non-toilet, to executive and super executive. For its high quality of services, ALS was recognized as the bus company with the furthest track and the most number of tracks by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation.
ALS, which stands for Antar Lintas Sumatera, is a public transportation operator from Medan, North Sumatra. Established on 29 September 1966, the company was initially named PT Pengangkutan dan Industri Antar Lintas Sumatera in Kotanopan, Mandailing Natal. It offered only limited routes, which were roundtrip routes of Medan – Kotanopan and Medan – Bukittinggi, using Chevrolet C50 buses. During that time, almost every area in Sumatra was difficult to reach by vehicles due to the inadequate road infrastructure. However, this did not hinder H. Sati Lubis and other ALS founders from providing quality transportation service for its users. In 1972, ALS introduced new routes to Banda Aceh, Padang, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Bengkulu, Palembang, and Lampung. ALS then moved its headquarter to Medan to accelerate operational business activities. ALS reached its prime when the Merak and Bakauheni ports were connected through the ferry transportation service in 1980. By opening several direct routes to areas in Java, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya, ALS became widely known as the cross-Java – Sumatra bus. In 1981, ALS received a cash injection and grew its fleet to maximize service. Having more than 50 years of experience does not mean that ALS does not have competition. Therefore, ALS continuously ensures the comfort of its loyal passengers by providing a range of classes, from non-AC, AC toilet, and AC non-toilet, to executive and super-executive, using the Mercedes Benz buses of various types. Not only that, in an effort to fulfill its passengers’ needs, ALS also provides a shuttle service to/from the Kualanamu Airport, in addition to its regular bus service. For its regular bus service, ALS offers a 2 - 1 seating format for its executive and super executive classes, a 2 - 2 seating format for its AC classes, and a 2 - 3 seating format for its non-AC classes. In addition, executive and super executive passengers can also experience a more enjoyable journey thanks to the plush reclining seat, complete with leg rests. Other bus facilities also include personal LED TV, blankets, pillows, power outlets, baggage storage, toilets, and a smoking room. Every passenger can also enjoy snacks and meal services, depending on the bus route and class. Up until today, ALS has served dozens of routes all over Java and Sumatra. For this service, in 2012 ALS was recognized as the bus company with the furthest track and most number of tracks according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation. In addition, Ir. Chandra Lubis, a chairman of PO ALS, was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ministry of Land Transportation in that same year. The award was given for his high dedication and loyalty in the field of land transportation.
