Australia Zoo, once a modest wildlife park managed by Steve Irwin and his partner, has grown significantly since its early days. In the 1980s, the park, originally known as the ‘Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park,’ covered just four hectares with a small team of two. During this period, Steve Irwin was enlisted by the Queensland Government to assist with crocodile management. He volunteered for the East Coast Crocodile Management Program, capturing over 100 crocodiles for relocation or for the park. It was also during this time that the park welcomed Harriet, a Galapagos tortoise who became a beloved and iconic resident. Harriet lived with the Irwin family for the last 20 years of her life until Steve Irwin’s passing in June 2006. On September 4, 2006, Steve Irwin passed away in an accident while snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. Today, his legacy is carried on by his family—Terri, Bindi, and Robert—who continue to honor his memory. Australia Zoo has expanded to over 700 hectares and employs more than 500 staff, upholding Steve Irwin’s mission of “Conservation Through Fun Education.” The zoo creates engaging habitats that allow both guests and animals to interact in a fun and educational way. It offers numerous attractions for families and children, making it a place where visitors can enjoy learning and having fun together.
