Istana Maimun is a fascinating historical site that is a must-visit when in Medan. Built between 1888 and 1891 by Sultan Ma'mun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah, this palace reflects the grandeur of the past with architectural touches that blend Malay, Islamic, European, and Indian styles. Its designer, Theodoor van Erp, successfully created a harmonious fusion of Middle Eastern and European influences, evident in the shape of the doors, large windows, and distinctive dome decorations. The dominant yellow color of the building symbolizes the strong Malay tradition, while the Italian marble floors, French chandeliers, and Dutch and English furniture add a sense of magnificence and cultural richness. This expansive Maimun Palace building has three main sections for you to explore: the 'balairung seri' as a reception hall, as well as the right and left wings, each with its unique characteristics. The 'balairung seri' impresses with a large throne surrounded by magnificent Malay-style carvings. Outside, there’s the "Meriam Puntung," a legendary cannon with its own story in local culture. More than a historical tourist destination, this palace also serves as a museum and cultural center where you can rent traditional Malay attire and take photos on a replica throne, capturing a valuable experience. Located on Brigjen Katamso Street, strategically close to downtown Medan, Maimun Palace is easily accessible and very popular with both local and international tourists. Managed by the Deli Sultanate Foundation, cultural and historical values are preserved in every corner of the palace. With affordable entrance fees, you can experience the atmosphere of the past and immerse yourself in the diverse culture of the Deli Sultanate.
