Canterbury

Quake City is a place that honors the Canterbury earthquake and shows how it changed the city. It shares stories about the quake, from unique and emotional to inspiring. Before the earthquake, Christchurch was known for its historic buildings, many of which were badly damaged. At Quake City, you’ll find interesting exhibits that are fun for all ages. You can see what happened to Christchurch’s historic buildings and even use LEGO sets to design new city layouts. There are also hands-on activities to help you learn about earthquakes. You can try an earthquake simulator with a seismograph, which measures the size of the quake when you jump next to it. There’s also a liquefaction simulator that shows how earthquakes can turn solid ground into liquid, causing buildings to sink and roads to be buried. Quake City also has interactive displays, videos, and items recovered from the earthquake debris. These exhibits tell the story of how the people of Canterbury faced the disaster with hope and bravery.
