Traveloka: Increasing Trend of International Travel Ahead of School Holidays

Jakarta, 25 May 2023 — As the school holiday period is approaching fast, Traveloka, Southeast Asia’s leading travel platform, continues to demonstrate an increasing trend in both domestic and international travel.

Internal data from Traveloka shows that in the first quarter of 2023, the reservation rates for accommodations and flight tickets for domestic travel have returned to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, for international travel, there has been a twofold increase in accommodation reservations, particularly in destinations like Singapore and Japan, and an almost threefold increase in flight ticket reservations compared to the same period in 2022.

The same data reveals that Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and Australia remain the top destinations in terms of demand for international travel. As for domestic travel, Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Bali, and Yogyakarta, along with Jabodetabek, Surabaya, and Medan, are the favorite destinations for staycations.

Referring to the data from the 2nd World Tourism Barometer of 2023, released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism grew by 86% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period the previous year. It is estimated that 235 million tourists traveled internationally in the first three months of 2023, more than doubled compared to the same period in 2022.

This upward trend in travel is aligned with data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik), which states that from January to March 2023, the number of domestic air passengers increased by 32.69% compared to the same period in 2022. Similarly, the number of international air passengers has experienced an increase of nearly 8 times compared to the same period the previous year.
