Kuala Terengganu is the capital to Malaysian state Terengganu. The city is located along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, around 450 km from Kuala Lumpur or five to six hours ride.

How to go to Kuala Terengganu

By plane

Kuala Terengganu’s airport, Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG), serves Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, Malindo Air, and AirAsia, with daily flights available from and to Kuala Lumpur. The one hour flight is served from two Malaysian airports: KLIA (for AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport Subang (Firefly and Malindo Air).

By bus

Several notable cities serve buses to Kuala Terengganu Tanjung Bus Terminal, with buses from Kuala Lumpur taking around six to seven hours to reach the city. The buses depart from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, and ticket can be purchased there with fare starting from 44.00 MYR. The departure schedules are as follow: 09:30 AM, 10:15 AM, 10:30 AM, 1 PM, 9:30 PM, 10 PM, 10:30 PM, and 10:45 PM (price and schedule are subject to change).

How to go to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) by train commuter

Terminal Bersepadu Selatan is located beside Bandar Tasik Selatan Train Station, a very short walk after alighting from the commuter with convenient connecting bridge from the adjacent station. These three commuter lines go to Bandar Tasik Selatan:

• KTM: take Seremban Line and get off at Bandar Tasik Selatan
• LRT: take Ampang Line through Sri Petaling. Be careful as the Ampang Line splits into two ends
• ERL: take KLIA transit (transportation to the KLIA airport) and get off at Bandar Tasik Selatan

Tourist attractions in Kuala Terengganu

Batu Buruk Beach

Batu Buruk Beach, also known as Batu Buruk Recreational Park is located on eastern Kuala Terengganu, which is about 10-minute-ride from the heart of Kuala Terengganu city.

The white sand beach is complemented by clear water, which earns itself the topmost position among abundant beaches all over Terengganu state.

Visitors can fly kites, ride on horse cart and horse, or even ride an ATV (All Train Vehicles). Besides, there are stalls offering many distinctive Terengganu cuisines, with nasi dagang as the most favoured menu among visitors.

To reach the beach from Bus Terminal MBKT (Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Terengganu), hop on the bus routing to Marang or Dungun, then alight at Batu Buruk Beach. You may also use mini bus 13 or 14, go by taxi, or walk for around 20 minutes from the bus terminal.

• Delman (horse carriage) fare: 5.00 MYR (adults) and 2.00 MYR (children)
• Horse ride fare: 3.00 MYR per person
• ATV fare: 15.00 MYR per person for 15 minutes.

Taman Tamadun Islam

Islamic Civilization Park Taman Tamadun Islam is an Islamic Park located in Wan Man Island, reachable within 15-minutes land transportation from Kuala Terengganu.

Taman Tamadun Islam is divided to Zone A and Zone B. Zone A is monuments park, a home to 22 iconic and famous building and mosque miniatures from all around the world, such as Taj Mahal, The Prophet’s Mosque, and Mohammad Ali Mosque. Meanwhile, Zone B is a public area houses the Crystal Mosque, B’Beteng Restaurant, shopping arcade, and food court.

Aside of the detailed famous architectures captured in the miniature and the histories behind, there are interactive activities, such as video show and edu-games.  

To reach the park, hop on Bas Bandar C-02 with route Dataran Shahbandar – Taman Tamadun Islam. The bus operates daily with schedules as follow:

Mon-Thu: 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM, 4:30 PM

Fri-Sun & public holidays: 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM, 3:30 PM, 4:30 PM

Other than common taxis, try the unique water taxi. The tickets are available from Shahbandar Jetty, next to Pasar Payang Market as well as departing point to Wan Man Island.

• Children 0-6 years old    : free (accompanied by parents)

Travel tips

• You are prohibited from swimming at Batu Buruk Beach due to its powerful and dangerous waves and currents.
• Allocate some time to taste Kuala Terengganu’s authentic cuisine dodol daun palas, which can be found at Pasar Payang, Sultan Zainal Abidin Street.
• Kuala Terengganu’s authentic snack, keropok lekor, is made of flour and fish. It is a perfect snack souvenir to families and friends. You can buy it at Kedai Bukit Tok Beng, Kuala Terengganu.
• There is an evening market at Batu Buruk Beach site every Friday, open from 03:00 PM to 07:00 PM. The evening market sells various goods and local foods.
